Riverhounds lose home opener

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, April 13th, 2014 – 9:19 am

Pittsburgh Riverhounds fell to the Wilmington Hammerheads 4-3 in their home opener before a standing room, sellout crowd at Highmark Stadium on Saturday night.

The Riverhounds trailed 2-0 at the half, and looked to the familiar combination of Jose Angulo and Matt Dallman cut the lead in half in the 55th minute and send the match into a wild, back and forth affair.

Angulo converted on Dallman’s corner kick with a header for his 2nd goal of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Wilmington responded almost immediately, as David Ochoa scored on a header on a free kick from Steven Miller in the 57th minute.

The Riverhounds continued to mount pressure, and after a few more close chances, would cut the lead to 3-2, as Collins John knocked a loose ball past Hammerheads goalkeeper Quillan Roberts.

Again, with the crowd back into the match, Wilmington would strike again. After a foul just inside the left side of the box, Ochoa calmly sent a penalty kick past Riverhounds goalkeeper Greg Blum for the 4-2 lead.

The Riverhounds kept coming.

In the 85th minute, as late sub, Kevin Kerr put in a one-time, left footed shot from just on the edge of the box that set up an exciting finish.

In the 90th minute, on another corner from Dallman, the ball sailed just past Angulo who was unmarked on the far post.

A minute later, Danny Earls made a nice run up the left side, passed it off to Joseph Ngwenya, who put it past Roberts.

As the Riverhounds and fans celebrated, it was quickly waved off by the officials, and the Hammerheads would escape Pittsburgh with 3 points.

The first half started out with each team exchanging long passes in the air, and possession.

Wilmington capitalized first, in the 26th minute, as Steven Miller took advantage of a lot of space from 21 yards, and sent a strike past Riverhounds goalkeeper Greg Blum.

The Riverhounds had a couple of nice chances, first coming from the right side, as Matt Dallman sent a ball right to Jose Angulo in the 15th minute that was broken up by a couple of Hammerheads defenders. The ball deflected out to Collins John who sent a one-time shot that was punched out by Hammerheads goalkeeper Quillan Roberts.

The Riverhounds drew a number of fouls near their attacking third in the first half. Each time, Dallman couldn’t convert. His best chance came in the 30th minute, from just out side the box from the left side he grazed the top of the crossbar.

In the 35th minute, Joseph Odobai sent a nice ball over the top to Angulo, who’s header was cleared away nicely by Roberts.

In the 39th minute Riverhounds Andrew Marshall was called for a handball just outside of the box, setting up Daniel Lovitz, for a free kick from 22 yards.

Lovitz made the most of his chance, with a bending shot that found the upper right corner of the goal, to give the Hammerheads a commanding 2-0 lead going into the half. pittsburgh-riverhounds

The Pittsburgh Power improved to 3-1 on the season after their 56-14 victory over the New Orleans VooDoo in front of a crowd of 5,224 at CONSOL Energy Center. The game was a special Friday night edition of “NET10 Wireless Arena Football” broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.

The Power, who set a franchise record for largest margin of victory at home, was led by defensive back Virgil Gray, who made Power history with three interceptions in the game. Back-up quarterback and jack linebacker Arvell Nelson had a game-high 11 tackles. The 14 points scored by the VooDoo was a franchise-low for New Orleans (1-3).

Pittsburgh quarterback Tommy Grady threw for five touchdowns, three of which went in the hands of wide receiver Aaron Lesué and two to wide receiver Tyrone Goard. Lesué finished the game with a game-high 10 catches for 115 yards.

On the first play from scrimmage, VooDoo defensive back Cameron McGlenn intercepted Grady’s pass and returned the ball to the Power 14-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Kurt Rocco connected with wide receiver Quorey Payne for a touchdown. Stefan Demos made the point after to give the VooDoo a 7-0 lead at the 12:30 mark of the first quarter.

The Power would go on to score the game’s next 49 points over the 54:29, beginning with a Lesué 5-yard touchdown catch from Grady. Julian Rauch made the PAT to tie the score at 7-7.

Pittsburgh took advantage of a Gray interception and converted it into a score when Grady connected with Lesué for a 6-yard touchdown on fourth and goal. Rauch added the point and gave the Power their first lead of the game, 14-7, with 12:05 remaining in the second quarter.

Pittsburgh went up 16-7 just seven seconds later when Rocco was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety. The Power extended their lead to 22-7 on Lesué’s third touchdown of the game, a 5-yard catch from Grady. The point after was no good. On the VooDoo’s next possession, the Power defense created a turnover on downs and capitalized three plays later when Grady found a wide open Goard for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Rauch’s point after was good and with 1:54 remaining in the half, the Power built a 29-7 lead.

New Orleans started their next drive at their own 3-yard line and Power linebacker Anthony Hoke intercepted Rocco and returned the ball for a touchdown which earned Hoke the Cutters Catch of the Game award. The point after was no good. The first half ended with Gray’s second interception of the game and the Power ahead 35-7.

The only touchdown of the third quarter was Goard’s second score of the game, which came on a 6-yard catch from Grady at the 3:53 mark. Rauch’s point after was good, increasing Pittsburgh’s lead to 42-7.

The fourth quarter opened with fullback Tommy Taggart scoring on a 3-yard run. Rauch’s PAT was good, extending the Power’s lead to 49-7. Nelson, in at quarterback, added to the lead on a 9-yard keeper with 3:20 remaining in the game. Rauch’s extra point made the score 56-7.

New Orleans closed out the game’s scoring with 54 seconds remaining on a L.J. Castille touchdown catch from Rocco. Demos’ kick was good, putting the score at 56-14. The 42-point margin of victory was the largest home victory in Power franchise history.

The Power will go for a franchise-tying fourth straight victory on Saturday, April 19, when they travel to Phoenix, AZ, to take on the defending ArenaBowl Champions the Arizona Rattlers. Kickoff at US Airways Center is set for 9:00 pm ET. The game will be broadcast on TribLIVE Radio and ESPN3.

RIVERHOUNDS FALL TO RICHMOND KICKERS 3-1

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, April 6th, 2014 – 8:04 am

The Richmond Kickers handed the Pittsburgh Riverhounds their first defeat of the season, 3-1, late Saturday afternoon at City Stadium.

The Kickers set the tone early, controlling possession and taking advantage of a Riverhounds lapse.

Kickers Forward Michael Seaton scored off a deflection that nicked off the feet of a few Riverhounds defenders in the 18th minute to give Richmond the 1-0 lead.

“We came out flat. Neither team really did much early on, but they took advantage of a poor touch, and capitalized. It looked like Andrew (Marshall) and Anthony (Arena) both deflected it trying to make a play,” said Riverhounds Head Coach Justin Evans.

With the Kickers controlling the majority of possession in the first half Riverhounds had limited chances. One of those was off the foot of midfielder Rob Vincent in the 15th minute. After a nice combination of passes, Vincent was able to line up and blast a ball from 30 yards, to the right side of the goal, but GK Ryan Taylor got to the ball for the save.

In the 30th minute, Riverhounds goalkeeper Greg Blum had to come up big, making an acrobatic, diving save on a shot that was heading into the upper right corner of the goal. Blum finished with 5 saves

Richmond added to the lead in the 55th minute, when for a second, it appeared a few players may have been anticipating a handball call at midfield as it appeared the ball was touched by a Richmond player. For a split second, there was some confusion, but play continued with no stoppage of play. Kicker’s midfielder Samuel Asante took advantage, found a lot of space in the attacking third, and sent a ball to Kyle Porter to the right, who beat Riverhounds goalkeeper Greg Blum.

“From our perspective, it was a handball. The referee even acknowledged it later, but didn’t have clarification from the linesman,” said Evans.

“That’s sometimes how the game goes. Sometimes you’re going to get calls go your way. Sometimes not. We’ve got to make our own luck.”

Trailing 2-0, and seeing that his team was outworked in the first half, Evans turned to his bench for a spark, and to a trio of players making their debut with the team. Bryan Ownby, newly acquired on loan from the Houston Dynamo a few days ago who played previously for the Kickers, started the 2nd half. Joseph Ngwenya and Collins John came in later to boost the Riverhounds attack, which gained momentum as the contest drew to a close.

In the 81st minute, after a nice service from Matt Dallman, Ngwenya beat his defender to the left side of the goal, and laid a ball to the center of the box for John, who easily beat Richmond goalkeeper Ryan Taylor to cut the lead in half.

In the final minutes, the Riverhounds kept bringing pressure, and made things tense for the Kickers in their home opener. Ngwenya found Dallman in the 85th minute open from outside the box, but Dallman’s shot cleared left of the goal.

In stoppage time, Dallman also missed another golden opportunity to tie the match, as he had a great shot from point blank range that was stopped by Taylor. On the ensuing possession, Christiano Francoisfound Porter on the left side to beat Blum for the 3-1 lead, to seal the Kickers first win of the young season.

Richmond outshot Pittsburgh 10-9, but the Riverhounds, with the late pressure, had a 6-4 advantage in the 2nd half.

“We lost the battle tonight, but we’ve got to keep on playing hard in every minute of every game. We have to play for 90 minutes every time out,” said Evans.

The Riverhounds (0-1-1) will look forward to their home debut next Saturday night, at Highmark Stadium at 7:00 p.m. vs Wilmington Hammerheads. They will return to Virginia in just two weeks for a rematch with the Kickers, once again at City Stadium, on April 19.
