1 month Anniversary of the WWE Network By Jeremy Ackman

published in category: Wrestling Reality on Tuesday, April 1st, 2014 – 11:01 am

On February 28th, the WWE sent shockwaves over the entertainment world by creating a first of its kind, WWE Network. This network was a first of its kind by not only have an on demand library of over 10,000 hours of classic matches and pay per views, but a 24/7 live streaming feed of various shows, historic moments, and live broadcasting.
The WWE network has an abundance of opportunity, and has been around nearly one moth now. Time for some personal critiquing.
I wanted to give the network the benefit of the doubters by not doing this a week in. For the most part, I was beyond excited for its launch for I have been following news bits and rumors mills like crazy since the start of 2012 when this idea was first addressed.
Its first week, or weeks for you XBOX 360 users (including yours truly) the WWE Network faced a plethora of issues. THIS WAS EXPECTED. After all, all things that are new, especially in the technology world, are bound to have bugs to work out. From various freezes, to no library being available, to crashes and a point in which you simply couldn’t log in at all (sorry again XBOX users) the WWE Network stood its ground, continually fed its fan base updates and time tables, and diligently worked out the expected issues.
WWE diligence aside…have you seen this thing yet!? It’s better than I anticipated. Not only, the WWE fan is treated to ever pay per view, ever filmed, for WCW, ECW, and WWE, ever, in existence is available, but so is classic old school programing from all three of the previous mentioned brands, shows of the new system and generation of WWE superstars, quality WWE event programming, and new series’ from the WWE, this Network is remarkable.
My personal favorite things are the new series’, the ability to see NXT, and the Wrestlemania library.
The new series I feel are a huge treat to the Network. WWE Countdown generates a top ten countdown of a various topic from entrances, to finishing moves. Beyond the Ring is a series that brings fantastically done WWE documentaries to live and to the fingertips of the WWE fan at home. My personal favorite, Wrestlemania Rewind is beautifully done. The show will highlight a key match in a past Wrestlemania, one that was done years ago and is still being talked about today. The show provides a documentary esq feel to it as it breaks down the storylines of how the match unfolded. These storylines are full of superstar interviews and inputs towards the match and its build up. Once that’s compete, the entire match is shown, followed by post-match content and superstar reactions.
NXT is the developmental league for the WWE. Here, fans can see the newest faces to the company, and these superstars’ matches are remarkable. High impact, high energy, and high octane are all descriptors of these individuals, whom someday hope to be a part of the full time schedule of WWE Raw and Smackdown.
The Pay per View library is extensive, but personally you cannot beat the Wrestlemania one. How awesome is it that a WWE fan, at any time, on any device, and watch any Wrestlemania in its entirety. The WWE’s greatest story’s and matches are at Wrestlemania, and the capabilities of going and watching any one, is an amazing feature.
After all this hype, I haven’t mentioned its price. Ironically, it’s the networks best feature. The network is costing fans $9.99 a month. With this, you get all the features described above and EVERY live pay per view for the year. If you are not sold yet on the network, r unfamiliar, here’s a financial breakdown. A standard pay per view for a WWE event is $54.99 a show. That’s nearly 6 months of the network. Wrestlemania 30 is literally right around the corner, and that will go for $60 for the show. So ask yourself this…. Spend $60 on Wrestlemania, or $60 on Wrestlemania 30, the following 5 live pay per views, every pay per view from past, new shows, new series, and anything you can think of at your tips….. It’s a no brainer.
One month in, I give the network an A. If I wasn’t a bitter XBOX user, I would make it an A+ but because some of the errors were Microsoft based A- would be too harsh. I will only dip to an A. This network is ridiculous for the average fan, a steal for the hardcore fan that I am. I will continue to hype this network up as much as humanly possible because THIS is what’s best for business.

POWER DERAIL SABERCATS IN A 48-47 VICTORY AT HOME

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, March 30th, 2014 – 9:19 am

The Ron James era of Pittsburgh Power football opened tonight with a dramatic 48-47 victory over the San Jose SaberCats in front of a crowd of 4,309 at CONSOL Energy Center. With the win, the Power even their record to 1-1 on the season while the SaberCats fall to 2-1.

Power quarterback Tommy Grady threw for five touchdowns without an interception. Wide Receiver Prechae Rodriguez led Pittsburgh’s offensive stats with nine catches for 91 yards receiving and four touchdown grabs. Jack Linebacker Latarrius Thomas held the defensive front for the Power with eight tackles. Thomas, Sergio Gilliam, and Virgil Gray each made an interception in tonight’s game against the SaberCats.

SaberCats’ quarterback Nathan Stanley, in his second career start, had a game-high 260 yards while throwing five touchdowns. Receiver Reggie Gray recorded game-highs 126 yards and 12 catches. On the defensive side for San Jose, defensive back Clevan Thomas recorded 10 tackles.

The Power took advantage of a pass interference play in the game’s opening drive and converted it into a score when Grady found Rodriguez for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Julian Rauch added the extra point giving Pittsburgh the early lead over San Jose 7-0.

On the SaberCats first play from scrimmage, Stanley was intercepted by Thomas at the San Jose 10-yard line. Four plays later, Grady found Rodriguez for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Rauch’s extra point put the Power up 14-0 at the 9:11 mark of the quarter.

The Power’s defense forced another SaberCats turnover when Justin Lawrence recovered a Stanley fumble at the San Jose 22-yard line. Pittsburgh turned the miscue into points as Grady scored on a 1-yard keeper. Rauch’s extra point closed out the first quarter scoring with the Power leading 21-0.

The second quarter started with Virgil Gray picking off Stanley in the end zone, but Pittsburgh could not come away with any points from the turnover. On San Jose’s next possession, Stanley found Huey Whittaker for a 5-yard touchdown pass, getting the SaberCats on the board for the first time. Nick Pertuit’s extra point was good and with 7:31 remaining in the first half, the Power’s lead was cut to 21-7.

Aaron LeSué took the ensuing kickoff down to the San Jose 11-yard line. On second and goal from the 8 yard line, Grady found a wide open Rodriguez for the duo’s third touchdown of the game. Rauch added the extra point to give the Power a 28-7 advantage.

Pittsburgh added to their lead when Grady connected with Rodriguez in the corner of the end zone with 29 seconds remaining in the half for a 4-yard score. The play was set up by a Rodriguez acrobatic catch over the boards, earning him the Cutters Catch of the Game honor. Rauch’s point after made the score 35-7.

San Jose’s J.J. Payne scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 4 seconds remaining in the half. The point after was wide. On the kickoff, the SaberCats’ David Hyland had a net recovery in the end zone for a touchdown making him the AFL Highlight of the Game. Pertuit converted the point after to close out the first half with the Power leading 35-20.

The SaberCats opened up the third quarter scoring with a Whittaker 3-yard touchdown pass from Stanley. Pertuit’s extra point was good and the Power lead was cut to 8 points at 35-27. The Power answered when Grady found Shaun Kauleinamoku in the corner of the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Rausch made the point after and at the 5:01 mark of the 3rd quarter, Pittsburgh led 42-27. Whittaker answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Stanley just before the end of the quarter. Pertuit’s kick was good, making the score 42-34.

Pittsburgh fullback Tommy Taggart scored the first touchdown of the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run. Rauch missed the extra point and with 10:48 remaining in the game, the Power was up 48-34. Gilliam intercepted Stanley on San Jose’s next possession resulting in a touchback. On fourth and 10 at the own 5 yard line, Grady found Kauleinamoku for a 31 yard catch down to the SaberCats 14-yard line. But the San Jose defense stopped the Power from putting the game out of the reach when the SabreCats’ Kenny Okoro broke up Grady’s pass on fourth and 1 from the 5-yard line.

San Jose came back with a 6-play, 45-yard drive capped by Reggie Gray’s 8-yard touchdown catch from Stanley. Pertuit’s extra point was good and with 48 seconds remaining, it was now a 1-possession game with the Power leading 48-41.

On the ensuing kickoff, San Jose’s Marc Schiechl recovered the onside attempt at the SaberCats’ 14-yard line. San Jose drove the ball down to the Power 3-yard line and with 10 seconds left, the SaberCats’ were flagged for a delay of game penalty pushing the ball back to the 8-yard line. On the next play, Stanley found Gray for an over-the-board touchdown catch with 3 seconds left. With the Power leading 48-47, the SaberCats opted for a 2-point conversion, but Gilliam knocked the ball out of Jason Willis’ hands to solidify the Pittsburgh victory.

RIVERHOUNDS BATTLE ORLANDO CITY SOCCER CLUB TO 1-1 DRAW IN SEASON OPENER

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, March 30th, 2014 – 9:18 am

The USL PRO season began on Saturday night at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds as they battled the defending league champions, Orlando City SC to a 1-1 draw.

In the 49th minute, Jose Angulo and Matt Dallman picked up where they left off last year as the USL PRO’s leading scoring tandem. After a scoreless first half, on a ball played from Dallman, Angulo beat a couple of Orlando defenders, then maneuvered past Orlando keeper, Miguel Gallardo for an easy left footed tap in finish to quiet the home crowd.

“Another big goal from Jose. He got a foot on it, and it came from Matt. He was able to do what he does best,” said Riverhounds head coach Justin Evans.

“Giving us the lead, against the defending champs, in this environment. That was big. Gave us a lift.”

In the 57th minute, the Lions responded.

Riverhounds starting goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap punched a dangerous header from Corey Hertzog over the bar to set up a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Gilstrap came out to play the ball, and went down hard after a collision. With Gilstrap unable to get back up, Hertzog took full advantage, blasting a ball past the line of Riverhounds defenders and just under the crossbar for the equalizer.

Gilstrap, who appeared to injure his head, would lie on the ground for a few minutes. He had to be helped off the field and was replaced by back-up Greg Blum.

Evans couldn’t understand why the play wasn’t stopped.

“It’s my understanding, that when there’s a dangerous head injury, the referee is supposed to stop play,” said Evans.

The goal would count. Orlando would keep coming at Blum, but he came up big numerous times in the final stages of the match.

“That’s not an easy situation for a goalkeeper to come into. They were coming at us with a lot of good crosses, but he did a great job.”

The Riverhounds held on — and escaped Orlando with a point.

Orlando City outshot Pittsburgh 17-8.

Orlando City started out the first half dominating possession. But the Riverhounds stayed back, keeping the Lions attackers in front of them for the most part of the first half, limiting chances to a few crosses and shots from distance.

The first look at the 2014 Riverhounds included a starting eleven that paired a number of new faces along with key returning players. Angulo and Jason Johnson, on loan from the Houston Dynamo at forward, Anthony Obodai and Rob Vincent in central midfield, Matt Dallman and Danny Earls on the outside, with captain Andrew Marshall and Anthony Arena, also on loan from the Dynamo in the central defense while Sterling Flunder and Brian Fekete at fullback.

Using fresh legs to fend off the Lions late pressure, Riverhounds head coach Justin Evans, went to his bench, utilizing Mike Green, Alfonso Motagalvan and the third Dynamo player on loan, Bryan Salazar in the closing minutes.

“We had to use a lot of players. Some guys were cramping up late,” said Evans.

“It was a total team effort, and a tremendous job tonight to get a point from a very tough team.”

The Riverhounds will now take on the Richmond Kickers next Saturday in Richmond, before returning to Pittsburgh for their home opener on Saturday, April 12 against the Wilmington Hammerheads. To purchase tickets, visit riverhounds.com or call the Box Office at (412) 325-7241.
