Pirates 9 – Orioles 8: Five Quick Thoughts

published in category: Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, May 22nd, 2014 – 9:04 am

The Pirates (19-26) won a shootout last night at PNC Park over the Orioles, not a typo, the offense showed up big. Here’s what I took from it:

  1. The Pirates couldn’t have asked for a better scenario last night. Wandy Rodriguez was awful and they still won. Which should mean that Brandon Cumpton will be called up to replace him soon.
  2. 2013 Melancon was in the building last night. Ten pitches, 2 strikeouts, game over. The Pirates need that to continue if they’re going to climb out of the hole they’ve dug for themselves.
  3. Andrew McCutchen is batting .364 this month, his average for the season is up to .317, and somehow he will have to do more if this team is going to make any noise this year.
  4. Pirates are 0-5 this season after scoring 7 or more runs to win a game. So, don’t expect too much from them tonight against the Nationals.  Not a good sign with Volquez on the mound.
  5. Honoring the 1979 World Series team on a Wednesday night was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. It was embarrassing. There were about 10,000 people there for the ceremony. The Pirates organization should be ashamed. I get that the Pirates were playing the Orioles, but once the schedule was out and it said Wednesday, they should have switch it up to Saturday and made it an event! Instead they made the most beloved team in Pittsburgh sports history look like the local opening act at a rap concert.
  6. BONUS: Unless Gregory Polanco comes to Pittsburgh and puts up “Puig numbers” in June, he won’t be as valuable as Jameson Taillon could have been to this team.

I’m out, listen to the Pittsburgh Sports Depot show with me, Daniel Dudley, from 3-5pm on TribLIVE Radio!

Riverhounds fire coach

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 – 10:42 am

Justin Evans has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, the team announced today.

“It was a tough decision to make,” said Riverhounds CEO Jason Kutney. “Justin has been a critical part of this organization for many years, but we felt that we needed to do this at this time to try and turn things around.”

The Riverhounds are off to a 0-4-3 mark this season.

A search for a new head coach is underway. Evans will be replaced on an interim basis by First Team Player Nikola Katic and assisted by Director of Academy Operations, Scott Gibson.

Katic has been a part of the Riverhounds organization as a professional player since 2009, and has played a key coaching role in The Riverhounds Academy throughout his time in Pittsburgh.

The Riverhounds play the Wilmington Hammerheads on the road on May 23 and the Charleston Battery on May 24. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 PM and will be streamed live on Youtube.

Steelers Sign Two Draft Picks

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, May 19th, 2014 – 9:24 am

The Steelers have signed two of their selections in the 2014 NFL Draft, sixth-round pick, defensive lineman Daniel McCullers and seventh-round pick, tight end Rob Blanchflower. Financial terms of the four-year deals were not disclosed.

McCullers (6-7, 352), who was the 215th overall pick, played collegiately at the University of Tennessee. In two seasons at Tennessee, he started 19-of-22 games and recorded 72 tackles (41 solo), 1.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, six quarterback pressures, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble, two pass breakups and two blocked kicks. In 2013, McCullers was named All-Southeastern Conference third-team by The NFL Draft Report. He spent his first two college seasons at Georgia Military College.

Blanchflower (6-4, 256), who was the 230th overall selection, played collegiately at the University of Massachusetts. He started 27-of-38 games, recording 109 receptions for 1,164 yards and nine touchdowns. Blanchflower’s 1,164 yards broke Milt Morin’s UMass record for receiving yards by a tight end and rank 15th on the school’s overall record chart. His 109 receptions are the eighth most in school history.

They are the first two of the Steelers nine selections from the 2014 NFL Draft to sign.

Power Dismantle KISS in 50-26 Victory at Home

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, May 18th, 2014 – 9:37 am

The Pittsburgh Power led wire-to-wire and improved to 6-3 on the season after their 50-26 victory over the LA KISS in front of a season-best crowd of 7,762 at CONSOL Energy Center this evening. The contest was broadcast nationally live on CBS Sports Network.

Power quarterback Tommy Grady finished the game 27-of-37 for 202 yards and five touchdowns. Wideout Hank Edwards led all receivers with eight catches for 47 yards and three touchdowns. Shaun Kauleinamoku and Tyrone Goard each added a touchdown catch for Pittsburgh, who has now won three games in a row.

The Power defense forced four turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble recovery) from the AFL’s all-time leader in pass completions, yards, and touchdowns Aaron Garcia. Defensive Back Al Phillips led Pittsburgh with 10 tackles, including a game-high eight solo tackles.

On the first play from scrimmage, Pittsburgh’s jack linebacker James Bryant sacked LA’s Garcia forcing a fumble that was recovered in the end zone by the Power’s defensive end Anthony Hoke for a touchdown. Kicker Julian Rauch added the extra point and with only 32 seconds played in the first quarter, the Power led 7-0. After forcing a turnover on downs on the KISS’ second possession, it took three plays for the Power offense to find the end zone. Grady connected with Edwards on a 19-yard touchdown pass and Rauch added the point after to make the score 14-0. The Power defense forced a second consecutive turnover on downs and capitalized two plays later when Grady found Kauleinamoku for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Rauch’s kick was good giving the Power a 21-0 lead.

Pittsburgh opened the second quarter scoring when defensive back Virgil Gray intercepted a Garcia pass and took the ball the length of the field for a franchise record 50-yard touchdown return, which was the AFL Highlight of the Game. Rauch added the extra point making the score 28-0. The KISS finally got on the board at the 3:34 mark of the quarter when Maurice Williams caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Garcia. The point after by Kenny Spencer was wide right. Pittsburgh would respond with Edwards scoring his second touchdown of the game from 17 yards. The score was also Grady’s fiftieth passing touchdown of the season. Rauch would make the extra point and give the Power a 35-6 lead. The KISS closed out the first half scoring on a Williams 3-yard touchdown catch with seven seconds remaining. Spencer converted the point after to send the game into halftime with the Power leading 35-13.

The Power scored the only touchdown of the third quarter when Goard reached over the boards for an acrobatic 6-yard touchdown catch from Grady, which earned him the Cutters Catch of the Game honor. Rauch kicked the extra point to extend the lead to 42-13.

LA scored midway through the fourth quarter on a Williams 9-yard touchdown reception to make the score 42-19. The KISS elected to go for the 2-point conversion, but Garcia’s attempt was intercepted by Hoke and returned the distance, which extended Pittsburgh’s lead to 44-19. Bryant then recovered the LA on-side kick attempt at the KISS 4-yard line. Grady found Edwards for his third score of the game two plays later, a 3-yard touchdown reception. With 5:06 remaining, the Power hit the half-century mark, leading 50-19. Rauch’s point after was wide right. The KISS scored the final points of the game with 1:29 left on a Raymond Radway 32-yard touchdown catch. Spencer added the point after to make the score 50-26.

Next up for the Power is a trip to Florida to face the Orlando Predators on Saturday, May 24. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm ET. The next Power home game will be Saturday, May 31 when they host American Conference – East Division leader Cleveland Gladiators. Kickoff at CONSOL Energy Center is scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. Both games will be broadcast on TribLIVE Radio and the Cleveland game will also air on thisTV Pittsburgh.
