RIVERHOUNDS FALL TO ROCHESTER

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, May 18th, 2014 – 9:36 am

Pittsburgh Riverhounds continued their struggles in USL PRO competition on Saturday night, losing to the Rochester Rhinos 1-0 at Highmark Stadium.

Late in the first half, in the 41st minute, the Rhinos scored the only goal of the match, thanks to some good fortune.

As a ball was played into the penalty box, two Rhinos players, J.C. Banks and Colin Rolfe converged on the ball about seven yards from the goal line. Rolfe whiffed on the bouncing ball on his first attempt, but as he lined up to take another shot, Riverhounds goalkeeper Mike Lisch came out to make a play on the ball. As the ball sprang loose, Rhinos midfielder Alex Dixon came in from the top of the box, to send the ball into the open net on a one-time shot.

“Arguably, Lisch came out to play the ball, and the guy who doesn’t play the ball, runs right into him,” said Justin Evans, Riverhounds Head Coach.

“The other guy collected it, took the first shot, and was able to score.”

It was a tough night for the Riverhounds, who maintained a lot of possession, but could not mount too many chances against a well-organized Rochester unit to secure their elusive first win of the year in USL PRO League play.

Evans shared his frustration with his team’s inability to generate scoring opportunities.

“When we’re passing through the midfield and our backs, our passes are connecting quickly. We’re sharp and on point there. That little bit, in the attacking third, we’re just not finding that little pass,” said Evans.

“And that’s the toughest thing to do in soccer, find that goal. We obviously have to do a better job. We have to find ways to get in there,” said Evans.

In the early going, it was a sloppy start for both teams. But the Riverhounds found a few nice opportunities.

Riverhounds forward Jose Angulo caused some headaches for Rhinos defenders. First, in the 8th minute, setting up a corner kick after nice possession and combination play down the left side. Then in the 15th minute, surrounded by four Rhinos defenders, on the edge of the penalty box, was able to turn and send a shot that ricocheted off the shoulder of Rhinos defender Tony Walls.

In the 19th minute, going for a 50-50 ball, Riverhounds midfielder Anthony Obodai was flipped over after running into a Rhinos defender. The referee signaled for play to continue, as Rob Vincent made a nice run into space, unleashing a lining shot toward the top corner, forcing Rhinos goalkeeper John McCarthy to make a diving save to his right to punch it away.

Lisch had to make three saves in the first half, while McCarthy’s only save was from Vincent’s blast.

The Rhinos held a 7-5 edge in shots, and Lisch finished the night with five saves.

Riverhounds starting line-up included: Lisch (GK), Sterling Flunder, Mike Green, Danny Earls, Anthony Arena, Rob Vincent, Kevin Kerr, Joseph Ngwenya, Anthony Obodai, Jose Angulo, Matt Dallman.

Evans substituted Collins John for Ngwenya at the beginning of the second half. Seth C’deBaca came in for Dallman, and making his Riverhounds debut, Robert Morris University product, Miro Cardilo entered the match in the 81st minute.

A few late efforts by the Riverhounds were turned away, as Rochester extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.

Ironically, the Riverhounds (0-3-4), who made the playoffs in 2013, have the same exact record at this point in 2014. All Evans can now hope for, is the same type of turnaround this season.

“At this point, I’d rather play terrible, and win the game,” said a disgruntled Evans.

The Riverhounds season will continue with a road trip next weekend to USL PRO opponents, Wilmington (NC) and Charleston (SC) on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24.

The Riverhounds will return home on Wednesday, May 28 to take on Chicago-based, RWD Adria in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament. This will be a rematch of last year’s dramatic second round Open Cup match that was decided by penalties, with the Riverhounds prevailing.

The Riverhounds next USL PRO League game at home, will be against in-state rivals, Harrisburg City Islanders, Sunday, June 1.

Pittsburgh’s Grady Named AFL Pulse Player of the Week

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Saturday, May 17th, 2014 – 6:21 pm

Pittsburgh Power quarterback Tommy Grady has been named the AFL Pulse Player of the Week for his recent philanthropic efforts.
Grady (6-7, 250, Utah), who is in his fifth season in the AFL and his first with the Power, has volunteered at several local elementary and middle schools speaking with students on topics from nutrition to the importance of education.
“I love talking to kids and teaching them about Arena Football, among other things,” Grady said. “I also just try to get to know them a little better and get them excited about coming to our games.”
As a professional athlete, Grady understands the importance of using his status to give back to others by participating in community service activities.
“Especially in professional sports, the community really helps to support us in a lot of different ways, so it’s important to interact with them and give them the support in return,” Grady said.
When he’s not on the field throwing touchdown passes, Grady enjoys volunteering with kids because he appreciates his position as a role model.
“Honestly, I like talking to kids because they look up to me,” Grady said. “Whenever they have a football player come spend time with them, they are always excited and seem interested in what we have to say.”
Grady and the Pittsburgh Power (5-3) will host the LA KISS (2-6) in the “NET10 Wireless Arena Football Saturday” matchup on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. ET tonight.
The AFL Pulse Player of the Week is awarded in recognition of commitment to community service. The AFL Pulse Al Lucas Hero of the Year will be awarded to one player at the end of the 2014 season.

RIVERHOUNDS DEFEAT NY RED BULLS U-23, 3-1, IN LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP GAME

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Thursday, May 15th, 2014 – 9:38 am

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds defeated the New York Red Bulls U23, 3-1, in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday at Highmark Stadium.

After a stagnant first half in which they controlled most of the play, and the match remained tied 1-1, the Riverhounds got a key goal from their dynamic duo of Matt Dallman and Jose Angulo to secure their first win of 2014.

The Riverhounds leading scorers from last season hooked up for the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute on a Dallman corner kick, as Angulo slashed through the penalty area to put a header past Red Bulls goalkeeper Evan Louro.

Angulo entered the match at the beginning of the second half, along with Joseph Ngweyna.

It seemed to be just what the Riverhounds attack needed.

“They came on and changed the game for us in a positive way,” said Justin Evans, Riverhounds Head Coach.

As things began to open up, Rob Vincent sealed the win for the home side with a nice run in the 81st minute, with a nifty give-and-go with Ngwenya to beat Louro to provide the games final margin.

The Riverhounds capitalized in the 10th minute to take an early lead against the visiting side. Advancing down the left flank, midfielder Vincent delivered a pinpoint pass to Dallman on the right edge of the box. Dallman was able to head the ball back across the goal mouth toward the center of the box, where Kevin Kerr came through to finish with a header into the back of the net.

The lead didn’t hold up very long.

The Red Bulls responded, as Riverhounds center back, Andrew Marshall was called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick.

Red Bull defender Sean Sheridan converted on the penalty kick, and the match was tied in the 12th minute.

The Riverhounds regained their composure, controlling things for the remainder of the first half, drawing numerous fouls, and setting seven corner kicks, but were unable to take advantage.

“It seemed like we were doing all the right things, getting to the end line. Putting a lot of pressure on their back four. It was very positive. We were comfortably in control of the game,” added Evans.

As the second half opened, the Riverhounds got the boost they needed.

“If you work hard, you are going to get a result,” said Angulo.

“Nice to come in, get the goal, help the team — as we played well in the second half. It was a good win.”

The USL PRO’s leading scorer a year ago, Angulo left the Riverhounds for a few weeks to be with his family as his father passed away. He returned to action, playing 70 minutes against Orlando on Friday, and with a full second half tonight, he feels ready to help his team get on a roll.

And continue finding the back of the net.

“My dad always told me, be a magnet. And just get in there, and the ball’s going to find you,” said Angulo.

With a league game on Saturday, all of the Houston Dynamo field players and a few others were held out, but the Riverhounds starting eleven included a lot of experience: Mike Lisch (goalkeeper), Sterling Flunder, Mike Green, Andrew Marshall, Danny Earls, Rob Vincent, Alfonso Motagalvan, Kevin Kerr, Seth C’deBaca, Dallman, and Collins John.

The Riverhounds dominated in shots (13-5) and corner kicks (16-4), in eliminating the Red Bull U23 from the Open Cup. They will host the third round of the Open Cup next Wednesday, May 21, against the winner of RWB Adria/Michigan Bucks match.

Up next for the Riverhounds will be an important USL PRO encounter with regional rival the Rochester Rhinos, on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium as they look to recover from a slow start to the season.

“We needed this one, to hopefully get us going,” said Evans.

“It’s huge for our confidence, for our players. To get guys in there and a positive result, it’s great.”

Future for Pens by Robert Norton

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, May 15th, 2014 – 9:37 am

As the final seconds ticked off the clock Tuesday night at the Consol Energy Center the Penguins found themselves in an all too familiar spot. For the fifth consecutive season they are packing up their lockers and heading to the golf course instead of the Stanley Cup Finals. Just as it has been at the end of four of the prior five seasons they failed to even make the Eastern Conference Finals. After the 2007-2008 season where they lost in the Cup Finals to Detroit in six games and the 2008-2009 season where they bested the Red Wings in seven to bring the cup back to Pittsburgh the city was buzzing with optimism. This was supposed to be a team that would and should compete for championships for the next decade. Instead we are looking at a team that has left its fan base shaking their heads in disappointment after another early playoff exit.

Only one thing is certain today as we enter the offseason and that is change is imminent. Nobody in the locker room or front office should feel safe. In fact, I think it is safe to say the only two people with any job security, besides Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, are Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Malkin showed flashes of brilliance in these playoffs, especially against the Rangers. In game five and home he seemed to be the only player that showed up to play. Sidney Crosby is a different story. For most of this past regular season he looked unstoppable. In the 2013-2014 season he won his second Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer in the NHL. He is a finalist for, and should be the runaway winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy which is presented to the MVP of the league. However in the playoffs he didn’t bother to show up very often. You can’t have that from the best player on your team, in the league and in the world. One goal in 13 playoff games is pedestrian. One goal in 13 playoff games is human. That’s not Sidney Crosby, or so we like to think.

However the blame shouldn’t clearly sit on Crosby’s and his teammates shoulders. In fact, they only should be given a minor portion of it. Ray Shero has been known for years as a mastermind around the league for the way he has operated as General Manager of the Penguins. The trade deadline moves involving players such as Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis, Marian Hossa, Gary Roberts, Bill Guerin, James Neal, Matt Niskanen, Jerome Iginla, Brandon Morrow, Jussi Jokinen and Douglas Murray to name a few were all seen as great acquisitions. At the time they may have been, but aside from Kunitz, Dupuis and Guerin, not one of them lifted the cup in a Pens uniform. Drafts under Shero have not fared much better. He has drafted mostly with defense in mind since he entered the organization. Of the 24 forwards he has selected in the NHL Draft since 2006 only Beau Bennett was on the roster for the playoffs this season. He was a healthy scratch for game seven against the Rangers. In total Shero has drafted 50 players since he became GM of the Penguins. Only two of them, Robert Bortuzzo, who was only playing because of an injury to Brooks Orpik, and rookie sensation Olli Maatta, were on the roster for game seven Tuesday night. The only word acceptable to describe this is unacceptable.

Along with Shero, a good bit of blame also should be directed towards Dan Bylsma. He played many forwards out of place and out of their comfort level. For instance Jerome Iginla and Beau Bennett are right wings who consistently played left wing for the Pens. Is there any question as to why those players seem to constantly under perform in a Penguins uniform? He also seemed to be more of a friend to the players than a coach. He was being paid to be their coach, not their friend. He seemed to lose his players and locker room as a consequence. He has proven to be a great regular season coach. However championships are not won during the regular season. On his resume he has a Stanley Cup, a Jack Adams award for coach of the year and he is the winningest coach in Penguins history with 252 regular season wins. The playoffs however are a different story. Yes, Bylsma does have the most playoff wins in franchise history but with 2009 aside, he and his teams have failed when it matters most. Two blown 3-1 series leads in the last 4 seasons against the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2011 and this season versus the New York Rangers are perfect examples of that failure.

The General Manager, coach and players all have one job and goal within an organization, to win games and championships. That is what they get paid to do. The problem is while performing their jobs each one of them has failed when it has mattered most. Seeing Sidney Crosby hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup at center ice in Detroit was only five years ago but it feels like ages. The team that once seemed destined to win multiple Stanley Cups should and will be ripped apart at the seams. One of the most frightening places to work in the country right now is 1001 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh. If your name isn’t Malkin or Crosby I suggest you sleep with one eye open for the next few weeks.

The worst part about the past five years hasn’t been the constant underachieving and disappointment by everyone involved during that time. The worst part about the past five years is now. There is a great deal finger pointing and uncertainty going on throughout the organization and city today. For the first time in years the Penguins have too many questions and not enough answers. The vision of Sid lifting the cup in Detroit is now nothing more than a distant memory. There are still many more chapters to be written for this great franchise in the years to come. I hope those chapters are filled with more joy than sorrow. The problem though is for the first time since drafting Sidney Crosby the light at the end of the tunnel seems very, very dim.
