RIVERHOUNDS TRIPLE UP FC DALLAS RESERVES 3-1

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Monday, August 25th, 2014 – 8:25 am

Playing with a sense of urgency, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds kept their USL PRO league playoff hopes alive, by defeating FC Dallas Reserves, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.

Goals by Rob Vincent, Kevin Kerr and Mike Green lifted the Riverhounds to their 8th win of the season, their seventh win in their past 10 matches, and most importantly to within one point of the final playoff spot.

“It’s a huge win. A test of our character,” said Green.

“Last week, was a hard one for us losing at Arizona. But today, we came to play, and we showed what we can do.”

As the second half began, the Riverhounds were holding on to a precarious 2-1 lead, after conceding a late goal in a first half, despite controlling possession throughout.

The Hounds quickly regained momentum and took command of the match in the 54th minute, on free kick opportunity from 35 yards.

Matt Dallman delivered a ball to the far post area, and Green made a perfectly timed run into the box, heading the ball past FC Dallas’ goalkeeper Richard Sanchez for the two-goal cushion.

“There was huge gap between me, and the defender, so I was backing away, I wanted to keep opening up that gap. As soon as it opened, Dallman played a great ball and I was able to get it in,” said Green.

The Riverhounds took the lead in the 20th minute, when Jason Johnson played a ball back to Vincent, who lined up a blast from just inside the 18 yard box, that found the back of the net.

Continuing to dominate possession for much of the first half, the Hounds converted again in the 33rd minute.

Dallman’s lining cross from the right side forced FC Dallas Reserves goalkeeper Richard Sanchez to come off the line to punch the ball away, but Kerr was right there for the finish to give the Hounds a 2-0 edge.

Dallman’s two assists brought his total to six for the season, as he’s now the team leader.

Riverhounds goalkeeper Mike Lisch would be tested in the moments that followed.

He came up with a big save to thwart a Ryan Hollingshead header from a dangerous, long cross in the 38th minute.

Lisch wasn’t so fortunate in the 42nd minute.

On a pretty routine high cross headed toward the right corner of the goal, Lisch came out to grab the ball, but it inexplicably slipped through his hands, bouncing to the goal line, where FC Dallas’ Cobi Span headed the ball through to cut the Riverhounds lead to 2-1.

In a sudden momentum shift, Dallas FC continued to mount pressure with two more quality shots that Lisch turned away. The Hounds outshot FC Dallas 7-5 in the first half.

“We’re not good enough to take our foot off the gas, and get too comfortable,” said Niko Katic, Riverhounds Interim Head Coach.

“We dominated the first forty minutes of the first half, and then the last five minutes was a bit of a shocker. We can’t do that. We’ve got to take care of business.”

Riverhounds starting eleven included: Mike Lisch (GK), Anthony Arena, Andrew Ribeiro, Sterling Flunder, Matt Dallman, Rob Vincent, Danny Earls, Kevin Kerr, Mike Green, Joseph Ngwenya, Jason Johnson.

Earls, who’s led the Riverhounds in minutes played in 2014, left in the 63rd minute for Alfonso Montagalvan.

Jhonny Arteaga replaced Johnson in the 76th minute, and Jose Angulo made his first appearance since injuring his ankle on July 27, in 85th minute, coming on for Green.

Lisch finished the match with five saves. The Hounds held the edge in shots (11-9).

With the win, the Riverhounds (8-12-5, 29 points) are right in the pack of teams fighting for the final USL PRO playoff spot, trailing Charlotte, Wilmington and Arizona (30 points), and tied with Oklahoma City.

“Every game we play, we tell the guys, lets just have a chance to get to that last game against Arizona (Sept. 6 at Highmark Stadium). And that’s all we ask,” said Katic.

“We have to keep playing one game at a time, we are hoping we have a chance in that last week.”

With three games remaining, the Riverhounds must now go on the road next weekend, with back-to-back games at Charlotte and Charleston on Friday, August 29 and 30, that will determine their fate.

They will return to finish the season against the Arizona United SC on Saturday, September 6, with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Tickets are still available at ticketmaster.com. The game will be streamed live in it’s entirety on YouTube.

Brett Keisel interview with Ken Laird

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, August 22nd, 2014 – 8:24 am

Brett Keisel

“Well, it feels great to be back, to be in the locker room and feel the emotion of the game. Obviously it wasn’t the emotion I wanted to feel in this game, but to be back and to be able to hope to help lead some of these guys, and help these guys turn into pros and accountable pros I’m excited about it.”

“I’ve been training and I did feel like I was going to play. I felt since about March when I decided I still wanted to play football that something would happen. I hoped it would be here, and for a long time I did think it would and nothing happened, nothing happened. It was kind of weird like ‘What am I going to do now?’ I’m just grateful that the Rooneys believed in me enough to be able to come back and have an impact.”

Did you go to Arizona?
“I got on the flight. I was in there for a couple hours. But, I’m just grateful I can finish where I started.”

Your role?
“No, we really didn’t get into that too much. They just said, ‘We want you back’ and figured out a number and it worked out.”

Feel like an outsider?
“A little bit, I haven’t bled with these guys. A lot of them I have, well some of them I have. A lot of them I have no idea who they are. That’s the approach I took, I just kind of stepped back. I was vocal, as you can tell my voice isn’t in shape. But step back and try to get a gauge on some of these guys. We have work to do”

The vets ticked you missed camp?
“Some of the older guys are like, ‘How do we get on that Keisel program’. Most of them were very receptive, and it’s just great to be back in it”

Cam Heyward Interview with Ken Laird

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, August 22nd, 2014 – 8:23 am

Cam Heyward

“When we don’t tackle and fit right, that’s what happens. I think everybody’s pissed off. If you’re not pissed off then you shouldn’t be on this team. Big level of disappointment. You best believe when we get to practice stuff better be handled or we’re going to be in for a long season this year. There’s time but it’s about responding now. Our tape is what we’ve got to live on. If we don’t correct it guys are going to run the same plays over and over until we get sick of it. I’m just ticked. We all have to look at each other in the mirror. We’re not going to settle. We know when we put on this jersey it represents a lot. We might not be the same players but we have to step up and make plays, and focus.”

What Philly did?
“No, we just didn’t execute. Missed tackles. We’re just not following our assignments, that’s me included. No pointing fingers. But, as a defense we’ve got to step it up. We’ve got to play with more energy and sense of urgency. We’ve got one more preseason game left, I don’t know how much guys are going to play. We’ve got to know when Cleveland comes to us they’re going to bring the full shed on us. They’re not going to mess around, they’re going to see what we did wrong and continue to run it.”

On Keisel’s return
“Very happy, he’s a great team leader. Provides more depth for us. He’s going to give advice to me and the other guys. Never hurts to have another guy of his stature in the locker room.”

Is your ankle anything to be worried about?
“No”

Wheaton Interview by Ken Laird

“I couldn’t tell you where we broke down. There were mess-ups here and there. Just have to watch the film. It could be, you come out first drive and get going and that continues throughout the game. We came out and we weren’t where we wanted to be early on and I feel that dragged on too long.”

“I think we stayed in a little bit extra. But we wanted to stay in there after playing the way we did.

Tried to mix it up, don’t want to come out and all the time use no-huddle, we want to do both. We tried to mix it up this game.

I’m not sure, obviously it looked bad. But you could go watch the film and it could be ‘this here is wrong, this here is wrong’ and you get to rolling. You never really know until you watch the film.”
