Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh Riverhounds striker Jose Angulo was named USL PRO Player of the Week for Week 14 after scoring three goals in two games, completing a spectacular six-point sweep this weekend against the Harrisburg City Islanders and the Antigua Barracudas. The former NY Red Bulls striker has now scored 10 goals this season, and sits second among the USL PRO goal-scoring leaders.
Angulo was at the center of the Riverhounds’ dramatic comeback victory against one of his former sides, the Harrisburg City Islanders, on Friday night. Facing a two-goal halftime deficit on the road, Angulo began the Riverhounds’ rally with a penalty kick early in the second half. He then gave his side the lead for the first time in the game, hitting home a first-time finish after Ryan Kinne’s initial effort had been blocked.
Two days later, Angulo continued his strong run of form as the Riverhounds defeated Antigua to move into the playoff places for the first time this season. Angulo was credited with an assist on Darren Amoo’s second goal of the game, with his excellent free kick coming back off the post to allow for an easy tap-in on the rebound, and then added the final goal of the game. Angulo has now scored in five consecutive games, recording a goal in each of the Riverhounds’ games in the month of June.
Angulo was joined on the Team of the Week by Amoo, who also had three goals in two games for the Riverhounds during the weekend. Amoo’s goal against Harrisburg on Friday was his first of the season, and he followed up with a brace against Antigua, including a beautifully struck half-volley that opened the scoring against the Barracudas.
“This is an incredible honor,” said Angulo after receiving news on his Player of the Week recognition. “As a whole, we had a really great weekend of play. Claiming six points in league standings is huge for us as we continue to make the final push towards playoffs.”
This is Angulo’s first time being named USL PRO Player of the Week and is his fourth time being recognized on the USL PRO Team of the Week for the 2013 season (Weeks 6, 9, and 13). Angulo has also received honorable mentions four times (Weeks 2, 5, 10, and 12).
The two wins this weekend extend the Riverhounds unbeaten streak to 10 as well as move the Club up in league standings, where they currently sit in 8th place below the Charlotte Eagles, who are scheduled to arrive at Highmark Stadium next week for the second and final leg of the 2013 regular season series between the two clubs.
Making honorable mentions this week for the Riverhounds are Matt Dallman and Rob Vincent. Dallman continues to lead the league in assists with 10 after setting up Amoo for a goal against the City Islanders as well as one to Vincent against the Barracudas. Vincent receives honors for his standout performance this weekend with a strong attacking form against the City Islanders Friday and scoring a goal against the Barracudas on Sunday.
The Riverhounds are off this weekend and return to Highmark Stadium on Thursday, July 4 to take on the Charlotte Eagles for the second and final leg of the 2013 regular season. Following the game, the Riverhounds invite patrons to remain at Highmark Stadium for top-notch seats for the Downtown Pittsburgh’s Independence Day fireworks display.

Third baseman Pedro Alvarez of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been named National League Player of the Week for the period
ending June 23rd. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In seven games last week, Alvarez ranked among league leaders in multiple offensive categories. The second overall pick in the 2008
Draft paced the N.L. with 10 RBI while hitting four home runs (T-2nd), collecting 27 total bases (3rd), and slugging .931 (4th). Alvarez hit .414
(12-for-29) for the week, the Senior Circuit’s fifth-best mark, while his five runs scored were tied for seventh and his .452 on-base percentage
ranked ninth. He collected at least a hit in each of his seven games, helping the Pirates to a 5-2 record for the week.
On Tuesday at Cincinnati, Alvarez’s two-run single in the top of the first inning gave the Bucs an early 3-0 lead and helped Pittsburgh
right-hander Charlie Morton earn his first win of the season. The Vanderbilt University product’s five-RBI performance in Thursday’s series
finale was the difference in a 5-3 Pirates victory that earned them a split in the four-game set with their N.L. Central rivals. Alvarez kept the
Pirates on pace with the Reds throughout the day, clubbing an RBI single in the top of the third and a solo homer in the sixth, before giving his
club a 5-2 lead in the seventh with a clutch three-run double. The left-handed-hitting slugger continued his torrid road trip as the Pirates
traveled to the West Coast to take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In the first of the three-game set at Angel Stadium, Alvarez went
2-for-3 with a walk and crushed his 17th homer of the year as Pittsburgh took a 5-2 decision. On Saturday, the 26-year-old went 2-for-4 with a
double and a home run on the way to a 6-1 Pirates victory. Alvarez clubbed his 19th home run of the season in the first inning of Sunday’s
series finale to give the Bucs an early 1-0 lead. His leadoff double in the 10th inning of the game sparked a four-run Pirates rally in an eventual win.

Pittsburgh — On a blistering hot afternoon in Station Square, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds convert two goals in each half to defeat the Antigua Barracudas 4-1 at Highmark Stadium. Darren Amoo led the Riverhounds with two goals, while Rob Vincent tallied his first goal of the season and Jose Angulo netted his tenth of the year in front of 3,121 supporters. With the decisive victory, the Riverhounds extend their undefeated streak to 10 games in USL PRO play.
The Riverhounds opened the scoring in the sixth minute of play, on a combination between Rich Costanzo and Amoo. Slashing through the offensive third with pace, Amoo attempted a one-two with Costanzo that deflected off of Karanja Mack and bounced back to him at the edge of the penalty area. Turning the ball on goal with his chest, Amoo volleyed a left-footed shot past Molvin James from twelve yards out.
The Barracudas struck on a counter-attack seven minutes later off the foot of Tamorley Thomas. Eugine Kirwan received the ball on the right flank just past midfield and picked his head up to see Thomas running past his marker. Kirwan’s pass encouraged Riverhounds goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap off of his line to meet Thomas just inside of the eighteen yard box. Thomas lifted the bouncing ball over the diving Gilstrap and into the back of the empty net.
The Riverhounds wasted little time to go back on top of the Barracudas when rookie Rob Vincent netted his first professional goal three minutes later. League-leading set up man, Matt Dallman beat two Barracudas on the right flank to draw Vincent’s marker to the ball. Dallman slid a pass to Vincent at the top of the box and Vincent bent the ball into the top right corner of the goal.
Seven minutes into the second half the Riverhounds received a dangerous set piece twenty-five yards from goal. Angulo bent a left-footed shot over the wall that required James to dive to his left. Attempting to push the ball out for a corner, James’ parry ricocheted off the upright and back across the goal mouth. Following up the shot, Amoo passed the ball into the back of the net from three yards out for his second of the game and third of the weekend.
In the 64th minute, Angulo added to the Riverhounds lead. Driving from left-to-right, Ryan Kinne found Angulo free twenty-five yards from goal. Taking a touch to prepare his body, Angulo rifled a dipping left-footed shot the struck the bottom of the crossbar and bounced just over the goal line. With the goal, Angulo completed the month of June by scoring in all five Riverhounds games.
The Riverhounds return to action on July 4th for a game against the Charlotte Eagles. The Independence Day match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kick off at Highmark Stadium. The Barracudas meet the L.A. Blues on July 4th at Cal State Fullerton Stadium. Their match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Kris Letang will surely be traded over the summer. The question is no longer if he will be traded but rather where will he end up?
When the Penguins traded Jordan Staal, it was a pretty easy deal to negotiate. Staal wanted to go to the Carolina Hurricanes, a non-divisional opponent at the time with prospects and cap space.
At this time, Letang has not requested a specific team and he likely wont say anything as long as contract negotiations continue between Pens GM Ray Shero and Letang’s agent Kent Hughes.
But we can probably narrow down the possibilities based on a team’s cap space, prospects, division, and ability to re-sign Letang after next season.
First, here’s a list I created of teams that will not fit as trade partners with the Penguins for Kris Letang:
Philadelphia Flyers
New York Islanders
New York Rangers
New Jersey Devils
Washington Capitals
Carolina Hurricanes
Vancouver Canucks
Chicago Blackhawks
Tampa Bay Lightning
Boston Bruins
Los Angeles Kings
Nashville Predators
Edmonton Oilers
Florida Panthers
Columbus Blue Jackets
Calgary Flames
Ottawa Senators
Phoenix Coyotes
Dallas Stars
St. Louis Blues
The Penguins wont send Letang to an Atlantic Division opponent and the Washington Capitals have an offensive defenseman by the name of Mike Green, who actually scores goals. Carolina may be a fit, but I doubt the Penguins would appreciate seeing Kris Letang and Jordan Staal multiple times per year.
The Vancouver Canucks have already invested a ton of money (nearly 23.5 mil) in their defense with the signings of Keith Ballard, Dan Hamhuis, Alexander Edler and Kevin Bieksa. The same can be said for teams like Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Nashville. Edmonton is looking for defensemen, but they already have an offensive blueliner in Nick Schultz.
Florida, Columbus, Dallas, and Phoenix would be undesirable locations for Letang to sign a long term contract.
There are some fringe teams that may or may not have a shot (St. Louis, Detroit) but overall I see four teams that may be a fit to acquire Letang:
Anaheim Ducks (solid write up from Inside Pittsburgh Sports on how Letang fits with the Ducks here)
Montreal Canadiens
Winnipeg Jets
Colorado Avalanche
There have been loose rumors that Letang would eventually like to return home to play for the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs have PK Subban, this year’s Norris Trophy winner and they surely won’t give him up just to acquire Letang.
Colorado owns the top pick in this year’s draft and a new coach in Patrick Roy. The Avalanche are unlikely to deal their top pick, especially for a guy like Letang, when they can have an 18 year old defenseman in Seth Jones.
Winnipeg is very intriguing to me. They have a ton of cap space, a plethora of NHL-ready forwards, and could use a more dynamic player on the backend. Dustin Byfuglien has a cannon from the point but Letang would open things up for the tenth scoring team in the Eastern Conference.
The Anaheim Ducks have the cap space, need, and prospects to get a deal done. Pittsburgh native, Josh Gibson, is a rising star between the pipes but the Ducks would be reluctant to let go of Viktor Fasth and Jonas Hiller. Bobby Ryan has been mentioned in trade talks for a few years now. That should increase since the Ducks extended Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry during the regular season this year.
This is complete speculation at this point. With the draft rapidly approaching (June 30th) there should be more rumors coming out of Pittsburgh on the whereabouts of Kris Letang’s future. There’s still a possiblity that he re-signs with Pittsburgh, but it’s not looking good. The Penguins need more depth and they do not have enough cap space to keep Letang.
