BROOKLYN, N.Y.—University of Pittsburgh freshman Steven Adams (Rotorua, New Zealand/Notre Dame Prep, Mass.) was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 12 pick in Thursday evening’s 2013 NBA Draft. An NBA lottery pick, Adams becomes the first Pitt player drafted in the first round since the Indiana Pacers selected Vonteego Cummings at No. 26 in 1999. His selection at No. 12 marks the second highest NBA Draft pick for a Pitt player behind Charles Smith, who was taken at No. 3 in 1988.
Adams, who was joined at the Barclays Center by Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon, was called to the stage at approximately 8:49 p.m. ET. He was handed an Oklahoma City Thunder hat, then proceeded to the stage for a photo opportunity with outgoing NBA Commissioner David Stern. He then conducted a live ESPN interview with Shane Battier, where viewers saw his jacket featuring a New Zealand flag.
The 7-foot, 250-pound Adams becomes the seventh Pitt player selected in either the NBA or ABA Draft First Round and the 28th overall Panthers player taken in a professional basketball draft. He is the second New Zealand native to be selected in the NBA Draft and the first-ever Kiwi to be picked in the first round. Adams will become only the fourth New Zealand born player to have played in the NBA, joining Aron Baynes (San Antonio Spurs), Sean Marks (Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets, Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns and Portland Trailblazers) and Kirk Penney (Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat).
A Big East All-Rookie Team selection, Adams led the 2012-13 Panthers in blocked shots (65), rebounding (6.3 rpg.) and field goal percentage (.571), and also contributed 7.2 points per game. While starting all 32 of his games played in 2012-13, Adams totaled two double-doubles, six double figure scoring games and five 10-plus rebound games. He concluded his freshman season ranked among school freshman leaders in several statistical categories including games started (2nd), field goal percentage (1st), rebounds (6th), rebound average (7th), percentage of starts (1st), blocked shots (2nd) and blocked shots average (3rd).
During his one-year stint, Adams helped guide Pitt to a fourth place Big East finish with a 12-6 conference record and a 24-9 overall record. The “Kiwi Phenom” also helped Pitt qualify for its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 12 seasons. Pitt is one of only seven schools to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 11 of the last 12 seasons.
With the selection, Adams becomes Pitt’s fourth current NBA player along with Aaron Gray (Toronto Raptors), DeJuan Blair (San Antonio Spurs) and Sam Young (Indiana Pacers).

When AJ Burnett and Wandy Rodriguez went down with injuries, the general consensus around Pittsburgh was “uh oh”. Instead, the Pittsburgh Pirates have gone on a tear, going 7-2 on a nine game road trip thanks to a six game winning streak.
Now, Rodriguez and Burnett are close to returning, with Wandy already on a rehab assignment in AAA Indianapolis. He could be back within a week while Burnett’s status is still unclear.
Nevertheless, the Pirates should get both of these pitchers back relatively soon which means tough decisions for the front office on the horizon. When they return, the Pirates will have seven starting pitchers on their roster which makes for two too many.
So who stays and who goes?
Well, four of the five starters are already set in stone. AJ Burnett is the ace and unquestioned leader of the pitching staff, Wandy Rodriguez owns the second lowest ERA among NL southpaws since 2009 (Cole Hamels is number 1), Jeff Locke has the second lowest ERA in the National League and is 0.01 points away from tying the NL leader, Matt Harvey. And let us not forget about Francisco Liriano who has 61 strikeouts in 54.2 innings while boasting a 2.30 ERA.
That leaves Charlie Morton, Jeanmar Gomez and Gerrit Cole for the fifth and final spot in the rotation.
While fans obviously want to see the former first overall pick, Gerrit Cole, the Pirates should go with Charlie Morton instead and send Cole back to AAA to get him ready for September call-ups.
To keep Cole on the big league team, the Pirates would need to DFA or release a starter and Morton would be the most likely option. There seems to be a lot of general disdain towards Morton which is puzzling considering how he’s pitched since coming back from Tommy John Surgery. Morton has an ERA of 2.81 (lower than Cole’s) while striking out twelve and walking six in three starts.
Cole has been impressive as well boasting a 3-0 record with a 3.44 ERA and eight strikeouts to one walk.
But the reason everyone wants Gerrit Cole to stay is because of his 100 mph fastball and the fact that he symbolizes the youth movement of talent finally making its way to Pittsburgh. Those make for great headlines, but what happens if Cole struggles?
Morton may not possess the 100 mph fastball, but he does throw in the mid 90′s with just as much movement as Cole and he has more confidence in his breaking ball.
What if the Pittsburgh Pirates HAVE to demote Cole due to performance? He was masterful in his last start against Anaheim but when he surrendered a home run to Albert Pujols, you could tell he was slightly rattled. Also, he still needs to get more out of his offspeed, especially his change up. Major League hitters will eventually catch up to that fastball and if Cole doesn’t have his offspeed working, it could be an issue.
If Cole needs to be demoted, that leaves Jeanmar Gomez as the fifth starter. Gomez has been solid so far this season, but he, like Wandy, has had to deal with forearm/elbow inflammation. If another starter goes down, the Pirates will need to rely on Brandon Cumpton or another AAA arm. They may even need to bring Cole back even if the kinks aren’t worked out.
For now, the Pirates can afford to keep Charlie Morton and send Gerrit Cole down to AAA when the rotation gets back to full strength. If Morton implodes, they can either move him to the bullpen or release him. But if they stick with Gerrit Cole, they wont be able to get Morton back should Cole struggle. Obviously there are other factors like Cole’s Super Two status, but if you’re just looking at being a contending team, you will need as much pitching as possible. Now is not the time to throw away perfectly good number five starters to keep a big name, especially when you can have both.
Then, when the rosters expand in September, call up Gerrit Cole and roll with a six man rotation for the rest of the season. That allows 36 year old AJ Burnett and 34 year old Wandy Rodriguez to get a little extra rest heading towards what could be Pittsburgh’s first postseason appearance in 21 years.

Polanco has hit a combined .312 (78-for-250) with 18 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 36 RBI, 35 runs scored
and 27 stolen bases in 65 games this season between Single-A Bradenton and Double-A Altoona. Polanco began the season
with Bradenton, where he was named to the Florida State League mid-season All-Star team while hitting .312 with 17
doubles, six home runs, 30 RBI, 29 runs scored and 24 stolen bases before being promoted to Altoona.
The 21-year-old outfielder entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the fourth-best prospect in the Pirates

Herrera is hitting .281 (68-for-242) with 15 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 35 RBI, 44 runs scored and nine
stolen bases in 61 games this season with Single-A West Virginia of the South Atlantic League. He was also one of six players
from West Virginia named to the South Atlantic League mid-season All-Star team.
The 19-year-old infielder was signed by the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent on July 26, 2010. Last year he was
named the Topps Gulf Coast League Player-of-the-Year while leading the league in total bases (96), finishing second in home

Pittsburgh – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are pleased to announce the addition of Terry “Tuffy” Shallenberger to the Club’s ownership in a move that will immediately position the Club to become one of the nation’s benchmark professional organizations.
An extremely successful business owner in the field of construction project management, the 46 year-old Shallenberger has played a key role in the development of soccer facilities in his hometown of Connellsville, Pennsylvania. Shallenberger began discussions with The Riverhounds Academy management out of an interest in bringing the technical training model to young players from the Connellsville area. The addition of Shallenberger is a powerful step forward in the development of the Riverhounds full professional model, a step that will include the geographic expansion of The Riverhounds Academy into new markets, immediate access to indoor and outdoor facilities for the launch of new skill-based league programming east of the City, state-of-the-art facilities currently in conceptual design phase, corporate sponsorship to support youth players involved in the highly successful Riverhounds Academy system, and new permanent staffing to offer unparalleled resources to local athletes as the area’s only professional soccer organization. Shallenberger officially marks his new position within the ownership group of the 14 year old Club in extremely exciting fashion, bringing the first-ever international soccer match to Highmark Stadium and setting the red-hot Hounds against current FA Cup holders, Wigan Athletic FC of England.
The July 19 match will be the first international friendly in downtown Pittsburgh since AS Roma fell to Chelsea at Heinz Field in July of 2004, in front of 25,137 fans. Immediately following the match, Pyrotecnico will dazzle all in attendance with an amazing fireworks display, capping off a truly memorable sports event in America’s most passionate sports city.
The intimate seating, majestic views of the downtown Pittsburgh skyline, and a full array of beers from around the globe will enhance the international sporting experience at America’s newest soccer stadium. The night before the match, Wigan will take to the field for a training session led by recently hired manager and ex-Irish international, Owen Coyle. Coyle, previously with Bolton Wanderers of the English Premier League, will make the team available for autographs and photo opportunities following the session, including the chance for fans to snap shots with the actual FA Cup trophy.
According to Riverhounds CEO, Jason Kutney, the two-night event, which will provide an up close and personal fan experience with top level pro players, is an indication of what the Riverhounds are all about, and the direction they are heading with Shallenberger on board.
“Tuffy is 100% in this to push the game forward through unique soccer opportunities in a world-class professional environment,” said Kutney. “He is a self-made success story who has a vision that completely aligns with our own. This is an enormous step forward for the game of soccer in Western Pennsylvania and I truly believe people will look back on this as a pivotal moment for the evolution of the game in our market.”
Individual and group ticket packages will be going on sale for the international friendly on Monday, July 1. However, as part of a special pre-sale event for all current Personal Seat License (PSL) holders and members of the Club’s Supporters Group, the Steel Army, secure ticketing options will open on Friday so as to provide a first-shot at tickets that are expected to sell out very quickly. The opportunity to watch one of England’s most well-known Clubs take on Pittsburgh’s pro team will make for an amazing experience for all soccer fans, many of whom are expected to be driving in from outside areas to take in the event.
“This is a must-see for any fan of the game,” continued Kutney, who on Friday, was honored as the 2013 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
“To bring one of the world’s top Clubs to Pittsburgh, to play within a first-class facility like Highmark Stadium, and to add a brilliant fireworks show following the match, this will be an absolute treat for any sports fan, and a fitting way to introduce the new-look Riverhounds
ownership group to Pittsburgh!”
Wigan is currently the holder of England’s most storied trophy, the FA Cup, following their 1-0 defeat of Manchester City at the end of the 2012-2013 season. In winning the Cup, Wigan has earned a spot in the UEFA Europa League where they will compete against Europe’s top Club in the coming year.
“This is such a great opportunity for the Riverhounds organization, its pro team, and all Hounds fans to take in a game of the highest level right here in our own back yard, at our very own, brand new stadium. As a soccer fan, I am not sure what else you could really want – it is quite simply going to be a spectacular night for all to enjoy,” stated Riverhounds Head Coach, Justin Evans.
Shallenberger will join Kutney and other members of the ownership group at the end of July, heading to Kansas City for the 2013 MLS All-Star Game. There, the group will convene with USL Pro ownership and management and will enter into dialogue with Major League Soccer in order to ensure the Pittsburgh side is doing its part to align with the highest standards of the domestic game.
“It is important that the Pittsburgh Riverhounds develop a tradition of winning, and for this to happen, there needs to be a sharp focus on what it takes to be the best and the resources to reach and sustain that point must be made available,” commented Shallenberger. “I believe this Club is headed in the right direction and is doing things the right way, focusing on quality, and I am committed to helping us reach the next level.”
Due to the international friendly, the Riverhounds USL PRO match against the Wilmington Hammerheads that is scheduled for Saturday, July 20 will be rescheduled for Sunday, July 21 at 3:00 p.m. If patrons are unable to make the rescheduled game, Ticketmaster will provide a full refund to them. More information will be sending an email to all patrons who have currently purchased tickets regarding information for the July 20 game change.
