Riverhounds win 2-1

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Monday, July 22nd, 2013 – 10:30 am

Pittsburgh—On a humid afternoon in Station Square, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds defeat the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-1 at Highmark Stadium. Entering the match at half time, Mike Seth wasted little time to put his mark on the game with a goal in the 52nd minute. Likewise, a Hammerheads second half substitute, Kyle Greig, equalized twenty minutes later off a corner that was not cleared by the Riverhounds. In the 79th minute, Seth played the set-up man on the game-winning goal by Matt Dallman.

The game started with the Hammerheads seeing the better of the play following the opening whistle. The visitors nearly capitalized on two quality services one minute apart. Receiving a corner in the 8th minute, Danny Roberts delivered a cross towards the penalty spot for Gareth Evans. Fighting off his marker, Evans turned the ball towards the Riverhounds goal with his head, but his attempt missed just right of the upright.

The ensuing goal kick was picked up by the Hammerheads at midfield by Paul Nicholson. Freeing the ball to the right flank, Nicholson found Shawn Nicklaw behind the Riverhounds defense. Nicklaw served an early, right-footed service into the penalty area for Roberts. Rising above the crowd, Roberts headed the ball towards the left upright, but his header sailed wide of the goal.

The Riverhounds had two dangerous services of their own, five minutes apart. Outside back, Mike Green changed the point of attack for Dallman on the right flank. Dallman served the ball across the goal mouth for Jose Angulo. As the service came down for Angulo, a Hammerheads defender deflected the ball just enough for Angulo to miss-hit the ball wide of the goal in the 22nd minute.

A combination between Rob Vincent and Darren Amoo, freed the striker on the left flank. Driving the ball across the goal mouth on the ground, the ball trickled by the Riverhounds attackers and Hammerheads defenders and out for a goal kick.

Head Coach Justin Evans inserted Stefan Lundberg, Seth C’deBaca, and Seth into the game to start the second half. The substitutions paid dividends seven minutes later when C’deBaca found Seth at the back post to tap home from one yard out. Angulo drove inside from right-to-left and attempted a shot on goal. A Hammerheads defender denied the shot with a slide tackle, but the ball bounced directly back to Angulo. Seeing C’deBaca run past his marker to his right, Angulo played a soft volley to C’deBaca. Picking his head up to see his options, C’deBaca saw Seth and delivered a perfect for an easy tap in.

The Hammerheads came to even terms in the 72nd minute, when the Riverhounds failed to clear their lines on a corner. The Hammerheads service bounced off of multiple players from both sides, but Cody Arnoux turned the ball back on goal for a slashing Greig. Taking a first time attempt, Greig’s shot from close range deflected off of Riverhounds goalkeeper, Hunter Gilstrap and into the back of the net.

Seven minutes later, the Riverhounds would find the game-winner when Dallman would slot a shot home from a hard angle. Chasing down a service in the left corner, Seth turned back inside to free himself off his marker. Delivering a cross to the near post, Seth’s service deflected off a Hammerheads defender and towards goalkeeper Troy Hernandez. Continuing his run, Dallman beat Hernandez to the ball and touched it to his left. Seeing Hernandez off of position, Dallman passed the ball into the back of the empty net for his second of the season.

Angulo nearly added an insurance goal with ten minutes remaining on a brilliant individual effort. Driving with speed past two Hammerhead defenders, Angulo provided himself with time and space. Setting up his favorite left foot, Angulo rifled a shot past Hernandez, but his attempt would strike the upright and ricochet out of danger.

The Riverhounds return to action next Saturday on the road against Toronto FC Reserves. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff at BMO Field. The Hammerheads return to North Carolina for a Friday night game against VSI Tampa Bay FC. Their game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Legion Stadium.

Power beat Storm

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Sunday, July 21st, 2013 – 10:54 am

TAMPA BAY, FL (July 20, 2013) – The Pittsburgh Power beat the Tampa Bay Storm, 48-37, in front of the largest crowd in the Arena Football League this season, 16,118, at the Tampa Bay Times Forum this evening. With the win, the Power (4-13) stop a seven-game losing streak while the Storm (7-10) extended their losing skid to six games. Despite the loss tonight, the Storm clinched a berth in the AFL Playoffs.

Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh failed to score on each of their opening drives. On the first play of the next Storm offensive series, Power middle linebacker Gary Butler, the Riddell Defensive Player of the Game, forced a fumble which was recovered by teammate Alvin Ray Jackson who then ran the ball back 18 yards before handing the ball off to defensive back Sergio Gilliam, who ran the ball in for the final 15 yards for the touchdown (AFL Play Of The Game) to put the Power up 7-0. Tampa Bay failed to score on their third straight drive, and Pittsburgh’s offense would get on the scoreboard as quarterback Shane Austin’s 3-yard touchdown rush put the Power up 14-0. Storm quarterback Randy Hippeard answered quickly; hitting wide receiver Joe Hills on a 12-yard pass to cut the Pittsburgh lead to 14-7. Austin was sacked in the endzone on the next Power drive, and despite the safety, the Power held the lead, 14-9 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

The Storm turned the ball over on downs to start the 2nd Quarter, but capitalized when Austin fumbled on a quarterback sneak at the Tampa Bay 1-yard line. Tampa Bay defensive lineman R.J. Roberts recovered the fumble and ran it 48 yards for a touchdown, putting the Storm up for the first time, 16-14. Two drives later, Pittsburgh answered as Austin threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tyrone Collins to put the Power up 21-16. On Tampa Bay’s next possession, the game was delayed for several minutes as Pittsburgh defensive lineman Dominie Pittman was injured on a tackle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher, and sent to a local hospital for precautionary measures. The Power held the 21-16 lead at halftime.

Pittsburgh got the ball to start the second half, but turned the ball over on downs at their own 7-yard line. Tampa Bay scored two plays later when Hippeard connected on a 5-yard pass to Hills, the Russell Athletic Offensive Player Of The Game, to take back the lead, 23-21. That was the only scoring drive for either team in the 3rd Quarter.

Pittsburgh started the 4th Quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Austin to Mike Washington, and the Power regained the lead, 28-23. On the ensuing drive, Tampa Bay jumped back on top, 30-28, when Hippeard hit receiver Chris Davis with 19-yard touchdown pass. The Power answered back as Tyrone Collins caught a 44-yard bomb from Austin, putting Pittsburgh up, 35-30. A few drives later, Austin found Washington again to extend Pittsburgh’s lead, 42-30. The teams would trade scores one last time, but the Power sealed the game with a Gilliam interception with 34 seconds remaining and won 48-37, for their third road win of the season.

Power quarterback Shane Austin finished the game 18-for-32 with 249 yards and 5 total touchdowns (4 passing/1 rushing). Wide receiver Mike Washington had 6 receptions, 109 yards receiving and 2 touchdown grabs.

Storm wide receiver Joe Hills had 7 receptions for 49 yards and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Randy Hippeard threw for 202 yards on 25-45 passing with 2 touchdowns.

The Power visit Spokane, WA this Friday, July 26 for the final game of the 2013 season against their third straight AFL playoff qualifier. Kickoff against the Shock at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena is at 10:00 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast on TribLIVE Radio SportsTalk.

Penguins development camp; who cares by Jon Pennline

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, July 19th, 2013 – 8:37 am

On day 2 of the Pittsburgh Penguins development camp, the 39 prospects divided up into two groups and participated in a 4 on 4 scrimmage. The Penguins played strictly in the neutral zone and put a goal along each wall.

The purpose of this camp is to develop the future Penguins and prepare them as future NHL players. Among the prospects are last year’s first rounders Olli Maatta and Derrick Pouliot; both are offensive defensemen. Also included are Brian Dumoulin -a defensive prospect acquired in the Jordan Staal trade- and goaltender Tristan Jarry, selected in the second round by the Penguins in the 2013 draft.

There’s been a decent amount of chatter via social media, the radio, and general conversation over this prospect camp. My only question is, why?

Why, when the current head coach and GM have shown obvious favoritism towards veterans instead of rookies, should we care about who does what in this camp? The only prospect that has a sliver of a chance to make the NHL team is Brian Dumoulin and he’ll likely be used as a seventh defensemen.

Maatta and Pouliot, on the other hand, have a few years to go. That’s assuming they don’t get traded first.

If you need an example, look no further than Simon Despres’s tenure with Pittsburgh. Despres was a 2009 first round pick and he’s still fighting for an everyday spot. Despres played 18 games in 2011-2012 and just 33 games in the 2012-2013 season. When the playoffs started, Despres barely played and after the Penguins were eliminated, both Dan Bylsma and Ray Shero stated that Despres was a top four defenseman.

That title only lasted for a few days as the Penguins signed Rob Scuderi on the first day of free agency. Scuderi signed for four years and now the Penguins have three defensemen locked up for at least the next two years. Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik have expiring contracts after next season but it is unlikely the Penguins would want to fill two holes with rookie defensemen.

So where do Pouliot and Maatta fit? Better yet, where do Pouliot, Maatta, Scott Harrington, Reid McNeil, and Harrison Ruopp fit? Spoiler: they dont.

That means more trades are on the horizon for the Pittsburgh Penguins. With the team unable to refill the pool of talent thru this past draft, the team will likely hold off on packaging prospects together to bring in a big name. Instead, they’ll likely make a few lateral moves; I.E. a prospect defenseman for a young forward.

It is likely most of the names you see at this camp will never wear a Pittsburgh Penguin sweater, regardless of their talent or even how much a team claims they have interest in a player.

So, again, who cares about this development camp? It’s as entertaining as hockey in July.
