RMU Hoops Update

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Tuesday, January 20th, 2015 – 1:53 pm

Freshman guard Marcquise Reed of the Robert Morris University men’s basketball team was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time Monday.

Reed garners the honor after averaging 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 50 percent (17-for-34) from the field, including 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from beyond the arc, in a pair of games last week.

Reed is just the third student-athlete in program history to garner at least four NEC Rookie of the Week accolades, joining former guards Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Karon Abraham (2009-11). Abraham was honored four times during the 2009-10 campaign, while Chappell won the award five times during his rookie season in 2005-06.

In a 68-63 setback to St. Francis Brooklyn (1/16/15) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, Reed led the Colonials with 18 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Two days later in an 85-65 victory over Sacred Heart (1/18/15), Reed again RMU in scoring by tying a career high with 24 points while also establishing personal bests in rebounds (6) and assists (5). He shot 10-for-16 from the floor against the Pioneers, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and also finished 2-for-3 at the free-throw line.

On the 2014-15 campaign, Reed leads Robert Morris and ranks sixth in the NEC in scoring at 14.4 points per game. He also ranks second in the circuit in steals (1.89 per game), fifth in field goal percentage (.516) and 17th in assists (1.94 per game).

Against NEC foes, Reed has averaged 16.7 points, which ranks third in the league. Over his last 11 games, Reed has scored in double figures in 10 contests while averaging 17.0 points per game.

Led by fifth-year head coach Andrew Toole, RMU opens a two-game road trip Thursday, Jan. 22, with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Mount St. Mary’s at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md. -by RMU PR staffrmuPostrmuPost

Reunion hopes to revitalize Raw by Donny Chedrick

published in category: Wrestling Reality on Monday, January 19th, 2015 – 11:34 am

The WWE is just six days away from one of the most exciting events of their year, the Royal Rumble. With there being a lot of build up to two main matches (the Triple Threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the 30-man Royal Rumble), Raw needs to send fans into Sunday night with an effective ‘going home’ episode tonight.
Reunion shows are always a good move by the WWE to get a few more viewers into the show because they will get to see old superstars that have since moved on. Tonight, WWE fans will get to see more than just Hulk Hogan. They will get to see the return of the main men in the NWO, brother! Joining Hogan tonight will be Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and a rumored Sean Waltman (a.k.a. X-Pac). Other Hall-of-Famers such as Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and Jimmy Hart are also expected to be on Raw. Rumored superstars include the New Age Outlaws and the APA.

In the words of Kurt Angle, I think we all hope the rumors are “damn true” about tonight’s episode of Raw. With all of these former WWE Attitude Era greats in the arena together, the WWE will have to try very hard to give its fans a bad show. So many possible returns and so many possible surprises for tonight, I can’t wait for Raw.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed infielder Jung Ho Kang (pronounced “GAHNG”) to a four-year deal with a club option for the 2019 season. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 27-year-old Kang hit .356 (149-for-418) with 36 doubles, 40 home runs and 117 RBI in 117 games with the Nexen Heroes of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) in 2014. He led the league in slugging percentage (.739) and OPS (1.198) while ranking second in on-base percentage (.459), home runs and total bases (309).

“First I want to thank the Nexen Heroes for allowing me the challenge of competing at a Major League level,” said Kang. “I’m very excited and humbled by this opportunity. I look forward to joining a great group of teammates and I am ready to work hard to help the Pirates win any way that I can.”

RMU Hockey Update

published in category: College Sports on Thursday, January 15th, 2015 – 1:17 pm

THE LEAD
The first-place Colonials will seek to expand their Atlantic Hockey Conference lead this weekend, as they complete a five-game homestand with a two-game series against league foe American International. Last weekend at 84 Lumber Arena, RMU allowed only one goal in two games to third-place Bentley, but had to settle for a split. The Colonials won 3-0 on Friday night before falling 1-0 on Saturday.

PROMOTIONS
The first 300 fans at Friday’s game will receive a RoMo bobblehead presented by Trib Total Media, while Saturday is Military Appreciation Night. All active and retired military personnel get in free with the presentation of a valid ID, as the Colonials team up with the It’s About The Warrior Foundation to honor the folks who sacrifice for our country. As part of the festivities, RMU will sport camouflage uniforms.

ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS
– Since winning four in a row from Nov. 22 through Dec. 13, RMU hasn’t been able to string together back-to-back victories. The Colonials are 2-4-1 over that stretch, including a home split against Bentley last weekend.
– On the other hand, Robert Morris hasn’t dropped consecutive games all season, a large factor in its success. The Colonials are 2-0-2 this season following a defeat, a promising record that will be tested Friday night.
– Sophomore goalie Dalton Izyk earned his third AHC Goalie of the Week prize after posting a 34-save shutout against Bentley last Friday. Izyk, who was league Goalie of the Month in October, has blanked three teams this season.
– Last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Bentley marked the first time since Feb. 25, 2012 that RMU was shut out at 84 Lumber Arena. The Colonials had scored at least one goal in 50 consecutive contests on the Island.
– The Colonials erupted for 11 goals while going 1-0-1 at American International in late November. The line of David Friedmann, Brady Ferguson and Daniel Leavens combined for 11 points (6g, 5a) on that Massachusetts road trip.
– FUN FACT: Saturday was the first time this season that the Colonials have pulled their goalie for an extra attacker at the end of a game. Counting delayed penalty situations, the RMU net has been empty for a total of 1 minute and 43 seconds through 22 games.

SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
– Since sweeping Niagara in early November, the Yellow Jackets have won only one of their past 15 games (1-10-4). They rallied for a dramatic 3-3 tie last Friday at RIT, but fell 3-2 to the Tigers in the Saturday rematch.
– American International has struggled in several statistical categories. The Jackets are last among 59 Division I teams in shots allowed per game (39.6) and faceoff percentage (40.3), second-to-last in shots on goal (23.6) and near the bottom in goals allowed (3.91, 56th).
– Despite all that, opponents need to be aware when sophomore Austin Orszulak and senior Alexander MacMillan are on the ice. They each have 22 points, tied for the sixth most in Atlantic Hockey. Orszulak’s 15 goals have him in a deadlock with Union’s Daniel Ciampini for the most in the nation.
– Freshman goalie Alex Murray has done high-quality work for 31st-year head coach Gary Wright. Murray maintains a .912 save percentage despite having faced an average of 34.7 shots in his first 15 collegiate starts.
– The Yellow Jackets were buzzing in the opening game of their home series against RMU, reaching a season high for goals in a 5-5 tie on Nov. 22. MacMillan (2g, 1a) and defenseman Andrew Debrincat (3a) had three points each, as the Colonials rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit.

Embracing the Block: After chasing Harvard all season for the NCAA lead in blocked shots per game, the Colonials finally took the top spot after its recent series against Bentley. Robert Morris averages an incredible 18.1 blocks per outing, improving from 16.3 last season, when it finished sixth in Division I in that category.

Kudos from Atlantic Hockey: The Colonials have not only succeeded on a team-wide basis this season, they’ve also earned several individual honors. On top of Cody Wydo and Izyk each earning Atlantic Hockey monthly awards in October, Leavens won player of the month for December. RMU has claimed 10 AHC player of the week honors as of Jan. 11, with Izyk (three), Friedmann (two) and Terry Shafer (two) winning multiple awards each.

#CodyForHobey: After a program-record 31-goal, 54-point junior year, Wydo has paced RMU’s attack once again. The Michigan native, who entered his senior season as the active Division I leader in goals, has 26 points (11g, 15a) in his first 22 games, ranking in the top five nationally.
