Boyd and Whitehead on Pitt Offense

published in category: College Sports on Monday, November 9th, 2015 – 9:49 am

On Panthers loss to #5 Notre Dame. Pitt defense giving up over 7 yards per play in last four games. Tyler Boyd sets receiving records. More Jordan Whitehead in backfield on offense? Next up-at Duke back in ACC play.

PITT (6-3, 4-1 ACC) vs. DUKE (6-3, 3-2)
November 14, 2015 • Noon, ET
Wallace Wade Stadium (33,941/Natural Grass) • Durham, N.C.

From Pitt PR- GAME STORYLINES
• Pitt plays its final road game of the regular season when it visits Duke for a crucial ACC Coastal Division encounter. The Panthers are 4-1 away from Pittsburgh this season, their best road record since 2008.
• Owning a 4-1 ACC mark, the Panthers need a victory at Duke (3-2) to stay in contention for the Coastal crown. Both teams trail North Carolina, which is atop the division with a 5-0 league mark.
• Offensive shootouts have been the rule for Pitt and Duke the past two seasons. In their two ACC meetings, the Panthers and Blue Devils have combined to score 212 points (106 each).
• Duke outlasted Pitt in two overtimes at Heinz Field last season, 51-48, despite James Conner’s 263 rushing yards and three touchdowns. In 2013, Tom Savage threw six TDs—three to Tyler Boyd—to help visiting Pitt hold off the Blue Devils in Durham, 58-55.
• The Panthers’ three losses this season are to a trio of nationally ranked teams with a combined 25-2 record: No. 6 Notre Dame (8-1), No. 8 Iowa (9-0) and No. 17 North Carolina (8-1)
• Freshman safety Jordan Whitehead is a strong ACC Rookie of the Year candidate. In addition to leading Pitt in tackles this season, Whitehead proved to be an offensive playmaker in last week’s Notre Dame game when he averaged nearly seven yards per rush and scored two touchdowns.
• Only a junior, Tyler Boyd has already established himself as the Panthers’ most prolific receiver ever. Boyd is Pitt’s all-time leader in both career receptions (229) and yards (3,097), surpassing such greats as Larry Fitzgerald, Antonio Bryant and Devin Street.
• Tyler Boyd is the ACC’s most productive pass catcher this season, leading the conference in receptions per game (8.25) and receiving yards per game (82.75).

Brown sets records, but Ben hurt in win by Brandon Walker

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, November 9th, 2015 – 9:35 am

Antonio Brown had a record setting day and the Steelers kept pace in the AFC wild card picture, but the big news out of Heinz Field Sunday afternoon is the left foot injury of Ben Roethlisberger. Chris Boswell kicked a 18 yard field goal with two seconds remaining to lift the Pittsburgh Steelers past the Oakland Raiders 38-35 in an important mid-season matchup between teams in the center of the AFC playoff picture. Boswell’s field goal was set up by a 57 yard catch and run by Brown from Landry Jones who came in for Ben in the 4th quarter who sustained the injury after a sack by Aldon Smith. Brown set franchise records in receptions (17) and receiving yards (284). Brown is only the second player to have at least 17 catches and 280 yards in a single game, the other guy was Terrell Owens in 2000.

1109AB

Roethlisberger went 24 for 44 for 334 yards and two touchdowns and one interceptions before he left the game. DeAngelo Williams had 170 rushing yards on 27 carries and 55 receiving yards for the Steelers (5-4) who amassed 597 total yards on Sunday. For the Raiders (4-4) Derek Carr went 24 for 44 for 301 yards, four touchdowns and one critical forth down interception to Ross Cockrell in the fourth quarter that at the time may have been the final dagger of the game. Latavius Murray rushed for 86 yards on 17 carries before he left the game with a concussion on a hit by Mike Mitchell that caused a fumble recovered by Jarvis Jones. Michael Crabtree caught seven passes for 108 yard and two touchdowns, the second was form 38 yards that tied the game at 35 with 1:15 left in regulation.

The Steelers had more yards (597-440), won the time of possession (32:04-27:56), won the turnover battle (4-2) and got more first downs (27-24). The Steelers controlled the majority of the game, however the defense who has improved week by week kept giving up big play after big play to the Raiders especially in the fourth quarter. The interception by Cockrell in the end zone saved the game on Sunday because there would be no reason to believe that the raiders would not have drove to get the winning score. Also the forced fumble on the kickoff in the fourth quarter that led to a four yard pass from Roethlisberger to rookie TE Jessie James helped as well. The Steelers got out of the stadium with a win mainly due to timely turnovers.

As for Ben, he is reportedly diagnosed with a mid- foot sprain and is expected to miss a few weeks. The best case scenario is that he misses only on game which is a home game against the Cleveland Browns next Sunday and be ready for a trip to Seattle after their bye. The worst case scenario is that the injury lingers and they go into their teeth of their schedule without their future Hall of fame quarterback. After their home game against the Browns their schedule goes as such: @ Seahawks, vs. Colts, @ Bengals, vs. Broncos, @ Ravens, @ Browns. Botton line is the rest of the Steelers season rest on Big Ben’s foot.

NARDUZZI DISHES IT OUT, BUT CAN’T TAKE IT by Tim Benz

published in category: College Sports on Sunday, November 8th, 2015 – 9:37 am

Pat Narduzzi had no problem taking an unprovoked swipe at Penn State’s playcalling a few weeks ago.

Pat Narduzzi used his own radio show as the format to rip Notre Dame.

Pat Narduzzi even gave a jab in the ribs to a beat writer covering his team over the quality of his writing this week.

Yup, Pat Narduzzi LOVES to dish it out.

Too bad he can’t take it.

Man, is the coach of the Pitt Panthers thin skinned or what!? He gets apoplectic on the sidelines any time an official’s call goes against him. He threw his own offensive coordinator under the bus after last Thursday night’s loss to North Carolina. And any time he’s asked a proper question by the media, he never just answers it like an adult. He’s always got a snippy, combative comeback.

1105PITT

For instance after Saturday’s 42-30 loss to Notre Dame, Narduzzi was asked if he tried to make any adjustments during the game against Irish receiver Will Fuller who shredded the secondary for 152 yards and three TD’s. Seemed like fair question to me. But that elicited this response from Narduzzi:

“We changed it up a little bit. But what are you going to do? He’s a good football player. We coulda called you out of the stands and see if you could cover him. But I don’t think that would have helped much.”

Woah! Simmer down coach ‘Duze! I don’t think the pencil pushing media guy was suggesting that he could guard a future NFL draft pick. I think he was just asking what your strategy was in an attempting to do so with the Division I scholarship athletes on your roster. That’s all. You didn’t get that I suppose?

The podium tough guy also offered up this gem when asked another completely legit question: “Coach, was there supposed to be safety help on any of those TD’s to Fuller?”

Narduzzi took a look down his nose and flippantly grumbled back- “I gotta go back and look at the tape. Gotta see what the splits were and all that stuff that you guys wouldn’t understand anyway.”

Oh, sorry coach. I hope that reporter goes back in a corner with his dunce cap on and starts drooling on himself.

Hey, Pat, I freely admit you’ve forgotten more football than I’ll ever know. And I understand it’s not as simple as it looks. But you’re explaining a football coaching decision. Not nuclear physics. And if the concept of your “splits” is REALLY that complex, maybe take the extra time you normally spend making yourself look like a preening hard ass and better use it explaining what the splits actually are?

Or maybe they are too complex to begin with and that’s why your team has made the last two QB opponents look like Heisman finalists.

Or you could just continue this weak sauce impersonation of an early-90’s era Bill Cowher that you are trying to rip off.

Because that’s the way it comes off ‘Duze. You look like an elevated coordinator who is having a rough time adjusting to being the public face of a team. Freaking out on the refs, grinding on your assistants, sparring with the media…Cowher did all that early in his career too.

And hey, it turned out great for him. But it also took him a while. Thirteen years in fact before he won a Super Bowl. And he had better players at his level of competition than you do. And his program was more established than yours when you both took over your respective positions.

Do you really think you are going to get thirteen years at Pitt?

Nobody is expecting you to be perfect, Pat. You are learning how to be a head coach. And your team is learning to win. It’s taken some strides under you quickly. You’ve avoided those ghastly losses so commonly associated with the Pitt Panther football team.

1108pitt

You know what else you’ve avoided, however? A quality win. Based on record, the best team you’ve beaten so far is Youngstown State. So check yourself. You haven’t accomplished anything yet.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just another media guy that can’t cover Will Fuller either.
