The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have signed forward Jose Angulo to a new two-year contract, it was announced today by chief executive officer Jason Kutney.
The new contract locks in Angulo, the 2013 USL PRO Most Valuable Player and scoring champion, through the 2015 season.
“Resigning a player with Jose’s abilities is just a small glimpse into the positive direction this Club is headed,” said head coach Justin Evans. “In past years, we would lose a player with Jose’s stats to an MLS team or even another team within our own league, and I’m very happy that we were able to keep him in Riverhounds colors.”
Angulo joined the Riverhounds for the 2013 campaign and had a standout season as he led the league with 34 points and finished tied for the league lead with 15 goals while adding 4 assists. The first player to score at the new Highmark Stadium, Angulo had a role in more than half the Riverhounds’ 36 regular-season goals as he led the side to the USL PRO Playoffs.
“Jose had a great 2013 season for us, capped off with the USL PRO Golden Boot and MVP honors, I look for him to build off of this momentum and have an even better summer for us in 2014” said Evans.
With the signings of Angulo and league assists leader Matt Dallman to contract extensions today, the Riverhounds have solidified their one-two punch for the 2014 season and beyond.
Terry “Tuffy” Shallenberger has expanded his role in the Pittsburgh soccer landscape by becoming majority owner of Highmark Stadium at Station Square in Pittsburgh.
“Highmark Stadium is the finest soccer facility you’ll find in USL PRO. I knew from the first time I set foot in this stadium that I wanted to be involved. It’s in a perfect location, with an unparalleled view of the city, and its potential is limitless,” said Shallenberger.
Shallenberger, 46, of Connellsville, PA, came to prominence in Pittsburgh’s soccer scene this past season, when he came on as majority owner of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. This latest move strengthens his role within the team. Shallenberger is already looking ahead to the 2014 season.
“We look to put a winning team on the field this year, with some major players on our roster, and we’ll be upgrading and expanding the facility to add to the total soccer experience. It’s going to be a great season, and a lot of exciting things will be happening at Highmark Stadium.”
Shallenberger is dedicated to seeing soccer flourish in southwestern Pennsylvania, investing in youth soccer programs and training facilities. After acquiring majority ownership of the Riverhounds, Shallenberger expanded the Riverhounds youth academy training program to include the The Riverhounds Academy in Connellsville. The indoor facility, located in Scottdale, includes a new synthetic turf soccer field for year-round training. Shallenberger has also constructed outdoor soccer fields for youth games and training in Connellsville to encourage more youth participation in the sport.
