The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have signed 2014 All-Star Josh Harrison to a four-year deal (2015-18), with club options for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.
The 27-year-old third baseman established career highs in every offensive category while spending his second full season in the big leagues in 2014 while helping the Pirates advance to the postseason for the second consecutive year. Last year Harrison finished ninth in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player, was named to the All-Star team for the first time in his career and finished second among all National League hitters with a .315 batting average. Harrison also led the National League with a .372 batting average with runners in scoring position and tied Matt Kemp for the National League lead in total bases (143) following the All-Star break.
“We are pleased to make this commitment to Josh and that Josh has made this commitment to the Pirates,” said Huntington. “Josh is a very talented, well-rounded player who helps our team win games offensively, defensively and on the bases. Additionally, he is an outstanding person who leads by example with his energy, grit and positivity. We look forward to continuing to work with Josh to achieve our shared goals.”
Harrison is beginning his seventh season as a member of the Pirates organization since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 30, 2009. The native of Cincinnati, Ohio, made his big league debut in 2011 with Pittsburgh and has recorded a career average of .283 (299-for-1056) with 62 doubles, 16 triples, 20 home runs, 98 RBI and 143 runs scored in 373 games with Pittsburgh.
