Swamp Thing

published in category: Ike Taylor, Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, April 30th, 2011 – 12:11 am

Coming into the 2011 draft, most Steelers fans would agree that the team's needs were, in order, CB, OL, DL.

Turns out, Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert got all three of those needs checked off in Rounds 1-3, albeit in reverse order.

Welcome to Pittsburgh Cameron Heyward, Marcus Gilbert, and Curtis Brown.

Gilbert has the potential to become the third former Florida Gator to be starting on the Pittsburgh offensive line with LT Max Starks and C Maurkice Pouncey due back from injury this upcoming season. With a year of tutelage behind Flozell Adams, one can envision Gilbert is penciled in as the starting RT in 2012.

A mountain of a man at 6'6, 331 lbs, Gilbert has 33 inch arms, nearly 10 inch hands, and did 30 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds at the NFL Combine. He is one of the rare Earth specimens you'll find combining size and surprising agility for that frame. During Senior Bowl week, his ability was on display and he looked very much like a solid future NFL protector.

Steelers Offensive Line Coach Sean Kugler indicated the team will get Gilbert ready to play both left and right tackle in the NFL, and Gilbert played both in Gainesville. Marcus spent two years as a full-time starter, in 2010 manning LT for 13 games and in 2009 spending 14 games at RT with Tim Tebow as his QB. All told, his run blocking resulted in 142 knockdowns and 22 touchdown-resulting blocks. As a pass blocker, he allowed 7 sacks and 9 QB pressures in those 27 starts.

Kugler also confirmed that Gilbert and Pouncey are "best buds," and that Maurkice was a big advocate of drafting his former teammate. If not his twin brother Mike donning Black & Gold, I guess Marcus will have to do. And it should encourage Steelers fans that both Kugler and Pouncey are in position to keep the fire lit under Gilbert's behind, as his tenacity and ferocity were the most often traits questioned by skeptical scouts.

All in all, I think Marcus Gilbert was another solid value pick for the Steelers at #62 overall, and continues the mandate of Head Coach Mike Tomlin to put an emphasis on "big men" in the early rounds of the draft.

And finally, much to the relief of Steeler Nation, the cornerback position was addressed in the Third Round of the 2011 NFL Draft with the Texan Curtis Brown.

On conference call with the Pittsburgh media immediately after the selection, Brown admitted he was at a "crawfish boil" with family and friends, soaking in the moment. A country boy from two hours east of Dallas, Brown visited the Steelers facility in early April and indicated after the draft that the Steelers felt like home to him from the moment he visited.

New Defensive Backs Coach Carnell Lake praised Brown for his quickness and coverage ability, the latter of which Lake described as better than even Brown's teammate at UT Aaron Williams (Williams was drafted by Buffalo with pick #34, and thought by some to be the Steelers Round 1 target).

Browns stands 5'11 1/2 inches tall, with a 186 pound frame. He ran a 4.50 40-yd dash time at the Combine, but was a track star in high school and said he's run as fast as the 4.3s on various times. As Lake described his playing ability, he plays quicker than fast.

Production-wise at Texas, Brown's two interceptions don't make one's eyebrows jump with amazement, but Curtis described his job as a man-coverage assignment where ball-hawking wasn't his #1 focus. Lake also noted that opposing teams shied away from throwing in Brown's directions because his coverage skills were so good.

Brown was named 2nd-team All-Big 12 Conference, and helped the Longhorns to a nation's 6th-best pass defense while starting 11 games as a senior. Brown played in all 52 games in his four-year Texas career, and was a valuable special teams contributor as well. Lake indicated that Brown will be asked to contribute to the Steelers as a gunner and outside coverage man on the specialty units in Pittsburgh, although he will likely not return punts. Most importantly, Lake declared he thinks Brown can help the team in 2011 at least on 3rd downs, likely as a nickel- or dime-back.

All in all, Brown isn't the can't miss Darelle Revis-like CB who could replace Ike Taylor as a rookie, but Brown will provide instant depth as a coverage man who comes in with four years of big-school experience under his belt. In a few years, with work on his backpedal and footwork, Brown could develop into the next Deshea Townsend in typical Steelers climb-the-ladder fashion.

Steelers Go Heyward

published in category: College Sports, Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 – 7:15 pm

The NFL Draft is rapidly approaching, and although it's awfully difficult to predict a selection when a team is drafting at 31st overall, my money is on the Pittsburgh Steelers sticking and picking Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward.

Heyward is the safest pick for Pittsburgh where they are selecting. The son of former Pitt star Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, Cameron has the elite football pedigree, has no evident character issues, exhibits minimal injury risk (coming off surgery for a hyperextended elbow, but he's not going to be expected to throw curveballs in the NFL), reportedly has a passion for the game, and was voted a team captain his senior year at OSU. Remember, character is an awfully important issue to the team here in the year after Milledgeville, Santonio Holmes, and Jeff Reed (scratch CB Jimmy Smith and NT Phil Taylor off your list because of it).

That said, can Cameron Heyward play?

With starts in 46 of his last 47 games at OSU and all told 52 games under his belt in the Big Ten, coupled with 37.5 tackles for loss in his career, Heyward has the resume of a first round draft pick. Heyward had 48 tackles his senior year and is a violent player in that part of his game. His athleticism for a big man makes him a pass rush threat (15 sacks at OSU), particularly if matched up against tight ends or running backs.

He also fits the Steelers very well, and looks to be the prototype 6'5, 295 3-4 DE this team loves to groom for the "5 technique." This could be Aaron Smith's final season and Brett Keisel is no young pup, meaning the Ziggy Hood / Heyward bookend duo will be pegged to take over in a year or two and keep the Black & Gold run defense elite. Stuffing the run is always the #1 goal of the Dick Lebeau led defense, and Heyward helps insure that goal is met for the next decade.

I'm told the team very much is interested in him, which already was evident with Mike Tomlin and Lebeau attending Heyward's workout in late March.

It's no sure thing, but Cameron Heyward is the betting favorite in the clubhouse.

The 2011 Steelers Schedule

published in category: Ike Taylor, Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 – 9:25 pm

Normally, when the NFL schedule is released, fans don't need to consider whether the games will actually take place. This is supposed to be the time when vacation days are blocked out across Steeler Nation.

Not in 2011.

Just a lock-out, no block out.

But, assuming the 2011 Pittsburgh Steelers football season does include actual, you know, players and games, here are my initial thoughts on the slate which was released Tuesday night:

The first four weeks are no picnic. Three of the four are road games, and three of the four are against playoff teams from 2010 (ok, so Seattle barely qualifies). It'll be the first time the Black and Yellow start the campaign on the road since 2007 (and that was in Cleveland). In fact, seven of the past eight seasons began at Heinz Field for the Steelers.

Get the big-boy pads ready, Week 1 of 2011 begins at M&T Bank-on-Violence Stadium in Baltimore.

And with the Ravens last two defeats (one in December, one in January) coming at the hands of their rivals, you know Baltimore's entire training camp will be operated, assuming the NFL operates, with beating Pittsburgh in Week 1 in mind.

V Seattle, AT Indy on Sunday primetime, and AT Houston follow. In particular, that guarantees tests for the Steelers secondary with Peyton Manning and Matt Schaub. And they're certain to have the Green Bay Packers / New England Patriots blueprint in hand. If the Steelers are without Ike Taylor at corner, the early season is a concern.

Now, this year's first quarter can't be tougher than last year's plight missing the suspended #7 (assuming this offseason continues to proceed quietly off the field), but a 2-2 record after four games in 2011 wouldn't be unreasonable.

After that, things open up a bit. Based on 2010 teams' records, the Steelers schedule is only 27th toughest in the league of 32.

Tennessee and Jacksonville should be winning fodder at Heinz Field in Games 5 and 6 (the Titans are in rebuild mode, and both teams rely on a ground game Pittsburgh can handle). A road trip to Pittsburgh West (Arizona) in Game 7 presents challenges, but a likely horrible QB situation for the Cardinals (Blaine Gabbert? Ryan Mallett?). A 5-2 record can be had at this point.

New England and Baltimore await in Games 8 and 9 in primetime at Heinz, the true heart of the schedule, sandwiched around Halloween. A trip to the Queen City in Game 10 finishes up the pre-bye schedule (is Polamalu still alive by this point?). These three games will be pure entertainment, albeit tough contests.

Then comes another NBC night game, this one in Kansas City after the Bye Week, giving the Steelers two weeks to prepare for an improving Chiefs team. And all in all with three Sunday night games in the first 12 games, NBC is showing Pittsburgh plenty of respect (who cares about Monday night anymore?).

Finally, the grand finale of Cincy, Cleveland (Thursday), at San Fran (MNF), St Louis (Saturday), and at Cleveland round out the season (Can you say Jan 1, 2012, in Cleveland??!! The Winter Blah-sick). Sam Bradford will come to Heinz Field with the Steelers on a short week and coming back from the left coast, but it's not the end of the world.

All in all, a manageable slate for the defending runners-up. Let's just hope the league is up and running.

Penguins – Lightning Game 1 Recap

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, April 14th, 2011 – 6:56 pm

Since last evening's Penguins 3-0 win over Tampa Bay in Game 1 of the NHL Playoffs, I've been wrestling in my mind over whether the outcome is a sign of a long or short series to follow.

On one hand, the Pens certainly showed the recipe for how this version of the team can win games sans Sidney Crosby and make this series a short affair:

-A few tablespoons of "getting to their game," i.e. quick breakouts, north/south movement, and sustained pressure in the attacking zone. I thought the Pens defensive corps was especially good at quick and efficient puck retrieval in their own zone (Zibby's 3rd Period clearing attempt off the ref's skate notwithstanding). The resulting edge in shots on goal of 32-18 over the final two periods says it all.

-A heaping helping of physicality, including seven hits from Brooks Orpik to lead the way. Pittsburgh made it known they won't give up an inch of ice easily, and Orpik's tone setter on Steven Stamkos 90 seconds in is the lasting image I take away from this contest. The Pens' edge in recent playoff experience was on display here, although the final hit numbers 44-35 in favor of the Lightning surprised me. That's a misleading stat, because the prime hits were mostly on the side of the Black & Gold.

-A dash of opportunistic scoring touch, with Alexei Kovalev and Aaron Asham scoring their first goals in 6 and 16 games, respectively. Kovy's old age paid off for him I suppose, as he patiently grabbed his walking cane and got off his feet from a Pavel Kubina hack job only to find James Neal's dish coming his way at the post. Asham's goal was Sid-caliber, and is the sign of a team that can ride the wave of positive emotion to bury a team when they're reeling. This would seem to be a great confidence boosting outcome for the Letestu-line and for Asham, a key role player as the series moves forward.

-A shaker of advantageous defensive match-ups, with the Paul Martin / Zibby Michalek D-pairing taking Stamkos out of the game and with Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and Jordan Staal matching "Marty and Vinny" step for step.

-Keeping the penalty box out of the ingredients, with only one penalty called on Pittsburgh. The refs clearly missed a few high sticks, and you've got to feel badly that Marty's teeth are St. Elsewhere today, but then again how do you call a high-sticking penalty when they guy's head is two inches from ice level? That dangerous TBay PP didn't have a chance to be a factor Wednesday.

-And of course, a major dousing of Marc-Andre Fleury as he trapped Lightning in a bottle (thanks to our friends at SteelersDepot.com for that line) with 32 saves for his 5th career playoff shutout. The prime scoring chances MAF saw: a Steve Downie deflection, Nate Thompson in front, Brett Clark on a 2 on 1, the goal that Dominic Moore thought was, the "Reverse Double-Leg Stacked Pad Save" on Ryan Malone, the "Gadget Arm" save on Vinny Lecavalier, stops on sneaky shots by Sean Bergenheim and Simon Gagne, and a late-game Stamkos shot through a screen. Flower was a little fortunate that TBay missed a few chances, too, but the quality of his stops that were ticketed for the back of the net put his Game 1 performance as virtuoso.

If followed Friday night and beyond, that's the recipe for a series win in short order.

However… Can Fleury be expected to repeat that for an entire series? Won't the Lightning adjust dramatically to the physical nature of the postseason? Aren't those top end scorers due to breakout for TBay, with power play chances sure to come as the series continues? And can the Pens keep finding two-three goals per game from role players?

I'm sticking with my pick of Pens in 7, but I'm feeling much more confident about the prediction after a Game 1 where it all went right.

Pittsburgh Penguins All-Time Team

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Sports Talk Radio on Tuesday, April 12th, 2011 – 6:20 pm

Spurred by a bar-room conversation, I have set about selecting a Pittsburgh Penguins all-time team. Not just 6 starters here, I'm talking a full four lines, six defensemen, and two goalies. Our good friend and native Pittsburgher Dave Dameshek of NFL.com and the Jimmy Kimmel Show joined me recently to aid in my selections, and here's what we've come up with (feedback welcome at sportstalk@tribweb.com):

Head Coach: Scotty Bowman
Assistant Coaches: Ed Johnston and Badger Bob Johnson
Strength Coach: Gary Roberts

Line 1: Kevin Stevens — Mario Lemieux – Jaromir Jagr
Line 2: Sidney Crosby — Ron Francis — Rick Tocchet
Line 3: Evgeni Malkin — Pierre LaRouche — Rick Kehoe
Line 4: Lowell Macdonald — Syl Apps — Jean Pronovost

Healthy Scratches: Joe Mullen, Mike Bullard, Marty Straka, John Cullen, Alexei Kovalev, Mark Recchi, Rob Brown

D1: Dave Burrows — Larry Murphy
D2: Paul Coffey — Ulf Samuellson
D3: Randy Carlysle — Ron Stackhouse

Healthy Scratches: Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Rob Scuderi, Darius Kasparaitis

G1: Marc-Andre Fleury
G2: Tom Barrasso
Runway Goalie: Michel Dion

I went well over my 23-man roster limit, but I'm keeping an extended taxi squad since Ron Burkle is my owner.

The NHL's Eastern Conference Roulette Wheel Season End

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 – 11:04 pm

I'm just wrapping up an interesting night at Consol Energy Center, after watching the Penguins 4-2 win over the already playoff-dead New Jersey Devils; interesting mostly due to the scores surging in from around the Eastern Conference of the NHL and the realization that an Atlantic Division title still up for grabs.

Earlier today it looked like the 4th and 5th seeds were set as the Pens and Tampa Lightning in some order, but with Philly stumbling tonight (their 4th straight loss and 6th defeat in their last 14-games against non-playoff teams) the Flyers have lost hold of the #1 seed in the East (it now belongs to Washington) and have given the Pens' hope of grabbing #2 seed.

Philly has games remaining Friday at Buffalo, and Saturday vs. the New York Islanders. With the Sabers in must-win mode and ready to welcome 80+ alumni to an emotional home finale, there's now a real chance Pittsburgh wins out while the Flyers lose another one, giving the Pens a new first round playoff opponent.

This would be huge, particularly if it's the NY Rangers as that opponent; New York's talented winger Ryan Callahan was lost for the season last night thanks to a Zdeno Chara shot off his ankle. That could be a more crushing blow to New York than even the Pens playing without Sidney Crosby, as the Rangers now have to rely on Marian Gaborik and a Callahan-less Brandon Dubinsky line for their offense. Yes, goalie Henrik Lundqvist is elite and makes a series at the Garden dangerous, but the Rangers are now the Penguins ideal first round opponent because they have offensive issues and little time to adjust.

Currently the Rangers sit in 8th place, though, and although their remaining games are home affairs with lowly Atlanta and the Devils, Buffalo could well hold them off for 7th place (the Sabers travel to Columbus after Friday's Philly tilt).

Buffalo, to me, is the worst possible Pens draw. The new Fighting Terry Pegulas are 7-1-2 in their past ten games and just halted the East's hottest team in TBay by a score of 4-2. Thomas Vanek had a hat trick in the game, giving him 31-goals for the year. Drew Stafford, Tim Connolly, Brad Boyes, Tyler Ennis, and Jason Pominville give them plenty enough offensive punch, and they have a belief that reminds me of 2010 Montreal. Even with the status of goalie Ryan Miller's collarbone up in the air, I would fear a first round Pittsburgh – Buffalo series if I'm the Pens (without Sid).

Either way, kudos to the NHL for a terrific product and a hell of a meaningful regular season wire-to-wire. And major credit to the Penguins for another win to keep a division crown in the hunt, and first-round home ice advantage closer to their grasp.
