Three Players to Make a One Game Difference and Help the Pirates Finish Over .500 by Mike Gaffney

published in category: Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, April 5th, 2013 – 3:04 pm

If baseball is a game of numbers then three is certainly the magic number. 90 feet from base to base, 60 feet six inches from the pitcher's mound to home plate, 162 games in a season, nine players on the field, all divisible by three to create America's favorite pastime.
Three games into the 2013 season the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in a familiar position, below .500. Last season's Bucs looked to be the ones to finally break the team's abysmal streak of seasons finishing under .500, which now sits at 20 years. 99 games into the season, the team was 15 games above .500 with a record of 57 wins and 42 loses, only to fall flat and finish with a record of 79 and 83.
If the Pirates are going to finish above .500 they will need to win three more games than last year's team. Here are the three additions to the 2013 Pirates that will make a one game difference.
1) Russell Martin was signed as a free agent after playing the last two seasons in the Bronx. Last year Martin hit 21 home runs for the Yankees to go along with 53 RBI in a season which many would consider to be the worst of his career statistically. A Pirates' catcher has never hit 20 homeruns in a season. Martin is hitless in three games this year but has been stellar defensively. If Martin is going to make a one game difference he needs to have a similar year offensively to what he accomplished last season and remain reliable behind the plate.
2) Wandy Rodriguez got off to a great start in his first full season as a Pirate by allowing only 2 hits in 6.2 innings of shutout ball against the Chicago Cubs. Many Pirates fans were too disgusted by the teams fall from grace last year to realize that in his last seven starts, Rodriguez went 4-0 allowing only 13 runs over 41.2 innings. Rodriguez has been incredibly consistent throughout his Major League career, pitching mostly for bad Astros' teams. With a little bit of run support, Rodriguez could be in line for his best year yet.
3) Starling Marté made his long awaited Pirates debut last year in late July. In all three games this season, Marté has been batting in the leadoff spot although he is not a typical leadoff hitter. Marté's speed is what makes him so attractive batting number one in the order but he strikes out far too often and rarely walks. If the Pirates new hitting coach, Jay Bell, can help Marté develop some plate discipline, fans can expect him to become one of the most productive players in the lineup.

If these three players don't perform, the Pirates will not finish the 2013 season above .500 resulting in 21 straight years of losing which, of course, is divisible by three.

Pittsburgh Power Game Preview by Dominic Errico

published in category: College Sports on Friday, March 29th, 2013 – 11:17 am

The Pittsburgh Power (0-1) will look to rebound from a crushing 64-33 loss to the Utah Blaze this Friday as they host the Jacksonville Sharks (1-0) at Consol Energy Center.

Jacksonville's offense is led by former Power quarterback Bernard Morris. The 4th year quarterback has the ability to make plays through the air and with his legs. Last week against the Tampa Bay Storm, Morris was 24 for 31 for 269 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also rushed for 20 yards and an additional touchdown.

Pittsburgh's quarterback, rookie Jordan Jefferson, will look to improve on the mistakes that plagued him in the loss to Utah. Jefferson threw for a respectable five touchdowns, but he wilted under the relentless Utah pressure. Overall Jefferson was sacked four times, intercepted twice, lost a fumble and took a safety. The Power offensive line will have to improve this week against Jacksonville.

Jacksonville boasts a strong trio of receivers. Jeff Hughley, the reigning JLS Ironman of the year, is a dynamic multi-threat player both in the passing and return games. Hughley caught 13 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and added six returns for 101 yards against Tampa Bay. Jeron Harvey is a 6'4" receiving threat in his 4th year with Jacksonville. He's the homerun guy the Sharks go to when they need a big play. He notched 6 catches for 62 yards and three scores last week. Markee White is a 6'7" possession/red zone receiver who makes a lot of plays for the Sharks. His size presents matchup nightmares for the shorter defensive backs in the AFL.

Pittsburgh counters with some experienced receivers of their own. Mike "The Joystick" Washington had another standout game last week with eight catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Christian Wise also made an impact on the scoresheet with two catches, both for touchdowns. P.J. "Superman" Berry was held scoreless, but did have 113 return yards. Pittsburgh's offense was nearly held scoreless in the second half and that will have to improve if they hope to win this game.

Defensively the Power did a good job holding reigning league MVP Tommy Grady under 200 yards passing, but they have to generate more defensive turnovers and stops. Sergio Gilliam had an interception as the first half expired to prevent a Utah drive. Chris LeFlore had pretty tight coverage the whole game and will be looking to intercept a few errant Morris passes. Jack linebacker Alvin Ray Jackson had a sack and led the team in tackles last week.

The key to this game will be the trench warfare. Pittsburgh needs more pass rush out of Neil Purvis and Dominie Pittman. If they can pressure Morris into rushing his throws, the Power have the weapons in the secondary to play takeway. If Morris has all day to throw he will find the open receiver repeatedly. Pittsburgh's offensive line must do a better job giving Jefferson time to breathe. They failed last week and as a result the Power offense stalled.

Power keys to the game
– Offensive line MUST protect Jefferson
– Find offensive rhythm and take advantage of scoring opportunities
– Pressure Morris into making mistakes

Sharks keys to the game.
– Force Jefferson into making more rookie mistakes, generate constant pressure
– Weather early homefield advantage for Pittsburgh
– Let Morris make plays and show Pittsburgh what got away.

Overall Pittsburgh has to improve on offense. 33 points and nearly being shutout in the second half is atrocious.
This team has too much talent for that to happen. Defensively, the Power should generate more takeovers this week. The big question is whether they can keep up offensively. Jacksonville has a lot of experience which could be the ultimate factor.

Bottom line, it should be a close competitive game, and the home crowd can

Statement from Pitt Head Football Coach Paul Chryst on Rushel Shell

published in category: College Sports on Thursday, March 28th, 2013 – 11:59 am

Statement from Pitt Head Football Coach Paul Chryst on Rushel Shell:
"Like many college freshmen, Rushel is working through some challenges right now. As it is for all members of our team, my most important concern is his personal well-being. Rushel and his family have our full support. We are giving him time away from football to work through this situation but he very much remains a part of our family on a daily basis. We want to be sensitive and respectful of Rushel, and I would ask others to do the same."

Penguins go all in; acquire Jarome Iginla from Flames by Rob Rossi

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, March 28th, 2013 – 9:29 am

Ray Shero went all in early Thursday morning.

The Penguins announced that Jarome Iginla, the most coveted player available for the approaching NHL trade deadline, had been acquired from Calgary.

"I know his background in terms of his character: great person, great worker, and he wanted to come here," Shero said.

Iginla was landed for a first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and prospects Ben Hanowski, a right winger, and Kenny Agostino, a left winger.

Iginla, 35, is the all-time leading scorer in Calgary history. He played on a line with Penguins captain Sidney Crosby during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Like left winger Brenden Morrow and defenseman Douglas Murray – each acquired by Shero over the last few days – he is on an expiring contract.

Shero said he has not discussed contract extension with Iginla or any of the recently acquired players.

He also stressed that Iginla, like Morrow and Murray, are willing to "accept any role" with the Penguins (26-8-0, 52 points), who have won 13 consecutive games.

Iginla is not likely to play against the Winnipeg Jets at Consol Energy Center on Thursday night.

The Penguins now have 15 forwards, nine defensemen and two goalies on their roster, Shero said.

The trade for Iginla is part of a push by Shero to build another Stanley Cup champion.

The Penguins won the Cup in 2009, but have since won only one playoff series, losing three in a row to lower-seeded clubs.

However, armed with salary-cap space and a wealth of draft picks, Shero began retooling the streaking Penguins this past Sunday when he landed Morrow from Dallas for defensive prospect Joe Morrow. Draft picks were also exchanged.

Shero snagged Murray, a physical defenseman, from San Jose the next day for a pair of picks.

The NHL trade deadline is April 3, and Shero did not commit to being done shopping even though he has added three players.

The Penguins added wingers Chris Kunitz, Bill Guerin and Craig Adams prior to the 2009 deadline.

Shero said he is aware of the strong chemistry with is current players, but the Penguins have not moved anybody off the NHL roster in these trades.

They still have nearly $15 million in salary-cap space to add players.

Iginla, though, is the big fish, as he was also being pursued by Boston – perceived widely as the Penguins' top challenged in the Eastern Conference.

Iginla had nine goals and 13 assists for the Flames this season. In over 1,200 NHL game he has recorded 525 goals and 1,095 points.
