OTTAWA — Evgeni Malkin called it.

Malkin said Tuesday that his trusty winger, James Neal was about to break out of his slump.

Neal scored two goals — and in a sign that the Penguins’ second line finally is jelling, Jarome Iginla also notched two — as the Penguins destroyed the Ottawa Senators in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Scotiabank Place, 7-3.

PITT’S JAMES ROBINSON INVITED TO USA BASKETBALL UNDER-19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM TRAINING CAMP

published in category: College Sports on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013 – 12:28 pm

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—University of Pittsburgh freshman James Robinson (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha Catholic H.S.) is one of 24 athletes invited to take part in the USA Basketball 2013 Men’s Under-19 National Team Training Camp. The camp will run from June 14-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Following the first three or four days of training camp, finalists for the team will be selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee. The official 12-member USA team will then train for three days from June 20-22 in Washington, D.C., prior to departing for the 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, which will be played June 27-July 7 in Prague, Czech Republic. Florida’s Billy Donovan will serve as head coach for the squad, while Virginia’s Tony Bennett and VCU’s Shaka Smart are the assistant coaches.

Last summer, Robinson was selected to play on the same USA National Team that captured the FIBA Americas Under-18 championship with a perfect 5-0 record at Sao Sebastiao de Paraiso, Brazil. Robinson led the Americans in assist:turnover ratio (6.00), totaled 12 assists and averaged 4.4 points and 15.6 minutes in the five games. Team USA averaged 97.2 points per game and outscored its opponents by an average 38.6 points per game. Robinson also represented Team USA in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit game held in Portland, Oregon on April 7, 2012.

In March, Robinson completed his freshman season at Pitt. In 32 starts and 33 games played, Robinson ranked No. 9 nationally and led the Big East Conference in assist:turnover ratio (2.83), ranked second on the team in assists (116) and third in minutes played (879). He also averaged 6.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, shot 79.2 percent (61-77) from the free throw line and reached double figure scoring in seven games on the year. As the winner of the team’s Best Defensive Player award, Robinson rated among school freshman season leaders in several categories: assist:turnover ratio (1st), games started (3rd), free throw percentage (4th), assists (4th), assists average (3rd) and steals (8th).

RIVERHOUNDS FALL TO NOR’EASTERS 1-0

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013 – 8:52 am

Ocean City, NJ – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds were eliminated from the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tonight at Carey Stadium following a 1-0 loss to the Ocean City Nor’easters of the USL Premier Development League (PDL).

The Riverhounds maintained quality possession throughout most of the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net despite outshooting the Nor’easters 8-2.

The Riverhounds struck early in the game when Riverhounds striker Jose Angulo stripped a Nor’easter defender to find Dallman 30 yards from goal. Nor’easters goalkeeper, Brian Billings, saved Dallman’s shot on goal.

In the 36th minute of play, defender Mike Seamon drove down the right flank and found forward Jhonny Arteaga at the penalty spot. Arteaga attempted a side-scissors follow that flew just over the crossbar.

Following halftime, Seamon overlapped Dallman down the right flank and drove the ball inside towards the goal. Taking a shot at the near post, Seamon’s attempt went inches wide.

Both teams remained scoreless for a most of the game until the 68th minute when Ken Tribbettof the Nor’easters was able to put the ball past Riverhounds goalkeeper, Greg Blum, from close range after it bounced off multiple players in the penalty area.

The Riverounds came close to evening the score in the final minutes of play when midfielder Ryan Kinne drove down the left flank and crossed a brilliant ball for Arteaga who slashed through the penalty box. Arteaga headed the ball cleanly and on frame, but Billings smothered the attempt to preserve the win for the Nor’easters.

Following the win, the Nor’easters will travel to play the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS) on Tuesday, May 28 at PPL Park.

The Riverhounds return to USL PRO action on Friday against the Antigua Barracuda (0-7-0). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
