Two Unlikely Villains of the Eastern Conference Final By Wesley Uhler

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, June 1st, 2013 – 6:17 pm

While names like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Zdeno Chara will be at the forefront of the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals, the most interesting storyline to follow this series, in my opinion, will be the performance of two NHL legends that have already secured their place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Jarome Iginla and Jaromir Jagr have been two of the most beloved and respected wingers in the NHL since the 1990s. Between the two men, they have played a combined 2,880 games and accounted for over 3,000 points.

However, despite their unquestioned success and respect, both men are likely to receive boos and jeers from opposing fans every time they touch the puck.

Jaromir Jagr spent a little more than a decade in Pittsburgh beginning in 1990, and during his tenure as a Penguin accomplished just about everything possible. Two Stanley Cups, one Hart Trophy (the NHL’s MVP award) and a handful of Art Ross Trophies (NHL leader in points) were captured by Jagr during his time in the Steel City. In spite of this success, he still receives a less than pleasant greeting from the black and gold faithful when he returns to Pittsburgh.

Penguins fans still remember 2001 when Jagr asked for a fresh start as the organization was struggling financially, and the team decided to move him to the Washington Capitals for a few prospects that never lived up to their promise. The most notable prospect was Kris Beech, who never lived up to his NHL potential recording just 27 points in 100 games with the Penguins.

Then in the summer of 2011 Jagr seemed poised to return to the NHL, and rumors swirled about talks with Mario Lemieux and a return to Pittsburgh. The public may never know the exact details, but something went wrong and Jagr ended up with the Penguins most hated rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers.

While I don’t agree with Pittsburgh’s hate towards Jaromir Jagr, I can certainly understand why many fans still choose to boo him. I also feel the same way about the boos Jarome Iginla will receive from Bruins fans.

Two months ago at the NHL trade deadline, Jarome Iginla was faced with a decision. Having a no-trade clause in his contract, Iginla had the power to decide which organization would be acquiring his services, Boston or Pittsburgh. While many media outlets reported Iginla was on his way to Boston, the deal was never finished and Iginla ultimately ended up in Pittsburgh, leaving the league stunned by another Ray Shero acquisition.

Iginla’s decision to pick Pittsburgh over Boston not only angered many New Englanders, but also opened the door for Jagr’s arrival in Bean Town. Making Boston fans even more upset is the fact that Iginla has outperformed Jagr this postseason. While Iginla has 12 points in 11 games, Jagr has just 4 assists in 12 games.

There is no question that Jarome Iginla and Jaromir Jagr are two of the most respected players in the NHL today. Despite this, both find themselves as unlikely villains in the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals.

In a playoff series jam packed with story lines and superstars, I believe the most interesting thing to watch will be the performance of two future Hall of Famers. Neither Jagr or Iginla are their team’s best player anymore, yet both will receive the majority of boos and jeers this series. How they respond could have a great impact on which team moves on to the Stanley Cup Final.

RIVERHOUNDS HOST THE ROCHESTER RHINOS AT HIGHMARK STADIUM

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Friday, May 31st, 2013 – 2:17 pm

Pittsburgh – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds begin the month of June at home this Saturday night when they host region-rival, the Rochester Rhinos. The Riverhounds enter the game with a five game unbeaten streak in USL PRO play during the month of May and is focused to maintain this form against the Rhinos. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kick off at Highmark Stadium.

Last Friday night, the Riverhounds hosted the Antigua Barracuda FC for the first time this season, resulting in a 2-0 victory for the Club. Playing set-up man once again and increasing his league-leading total to six, midfielder Matt Dallman delivered a crafty service for striker Mike Seth in the 18th minute for the game’s first goal. Dallman continued his offensive production for the Hounds and recorded his first goal of the season in the 39th minute on a through-ball from Jhonny Arteaga. Dallman’s second straight multi-point game earned him a spot on the USL PRO Team of the Week for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season.

Head Coach Justin Evans is confident heading into Saturday night’s match against the Rhinos.

“Our team is on the right track, but we’re not out of the woods yet,” said Evans. “The win last Friday was something we needed for our confidence and the hard work the team put in this week has prepared us to continue on our winning ways this Saturday.”

Saturday’s match will be the first time the two sides will meet this season. Both the Riverhounds and Rhinos have had similar starts to their season, filled with multiple games on the road and emotional outcomes, this meeting will definitely be a statement game for the two Clubs. The side that battles together and wins the individual match-ups should prevail victorious.

The Rhinos (1-6-2) come into the game with Interim Head Coach Pat Ercoli, after Jesse Myers was relieved of his responsibilities with the organization on Sunday, May 19. This will be Ercoli’s third match at the helm for the Rhinos in 2013 USL PRO play. The Rhinos will be playing their third game in five days, following a difficult 5-1 loss to the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday and a match-up tonight against the Los Angeles Blues at Sahlen’s Stadium. Carrying tired legs and a depleted roster due to injuries, the Rhinos will look to slow the came down and maintain possession throughout the match.

Prior to the match on Saturday, the Riverhounds will participate in the first-ever D-1 Game Day Experience Camp at Highmark Stadium from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. This two-hour event will provide young athletes, ages 10 to 13, with professional soccer training that will include soccer-specific techniques and exercises focused on developing the skill-sets needed for a young aspiring soccer player. The Game Day Experience will also include fundamental speed and strength training relative to the game of soccer. This event will be led by current Pittsburgh Riverhounds coaches and players, in association with D-1 Pittsburgh’s coaching staff.

Don’t miss out on the Riverhounds upcoming matches! On June 7, the Riverhounds meet the Toronto FC Reserves of the MLS, and are hosting a “White Out” night for the match. White T-shirts, sponsored by Highmark, will be given to all in attendence. On June 15, the Riverhounds will host the defending USL PRO champions, the Charleston Battery during Father’s Day weekend. The Riverhounds will have post-game fireworks by Pyrotecnico that will light up the city skyline for the second time this season at Highmark Stadium.

PITT’S DONALD AND HENDRICKS LAUDED BY ATHLON SPORTS ACC PREVIEW

published in category: College Sports on Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 – 9:11 am

PITTSBURGH—Pitt will have at its disposal two of the finest defensive players in the Atlantic Coast Conference this fall according to Athlon Sports 2013 ACC Football Preview magazine.

Defensive tackle Aaron Donald and safety Jason Hendricks were both selected preseason first team All-ACC by Athlon. The two seniors headline a Pitt defense that returns eight starters and ranked 17th nationally in yards allowed last season (330.54 yards/game).

Donald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) was a first-team All-Big East selection last year, compiling 64 total tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He led the Big East and ranked 12th nationally with 1.54 TFLs per game.

Over the past two seasons, Donald has compiled 18.5 sacks and 37.5 TFLs. He enters his senior year as a viable All-America and major awards candidate.

Hendricks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hudson Catholic [N.J.]) was a force against the run and pass last year. The second-team All-Big East pick led the Panthers in tackles (90), interceptions (six) and passes defensed (tied with 10). Hendricks’ interception total was the highest by a Pitt player since 2000, while his 0.46 INTs per game led the Big East and ranked sixth nationally.

Hendricks anchored a Pitt secondary that owned lofty 2012 NCAA rankings in pass defense (20th, 194.15 yards/game), pass efficiency defense (21st, 113.12 rating) and interceptions (26th, 15 total). He will eye the Jim Thorpe Award – annually presented to the nation’s top defensive back – in 2013.

Two other Pitt players earned mention in Athlon’s ACC preview. Freshmen Dorian Johnson and Tyler Boyd were both rated among the league’s top 30 signees for this year. Johnson (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), an offensive tackle, is rated No. 7, while Boyd (Clairton, Pa./Clairton), a wide receiver, is No. 26.

Athlon’s regional ACC cover (jpeg attached), available on newsstands now, features senior wide receiver Devin Street (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty). A 2012 All-Big East selection, Street is coming off an exceptional year in which he posted 73 catches for 975 yards (13.4 avg.) and five touchdowns. The Biletnikoff Award candidate (nation’s top receiver) has 151 career receptions and needs just 28 to become the top pass-catcher in Pitt history. (Latef Grim holds the record with 178 catches from 1998-2000.)

The 2013 season marks the Panthers’ first as a member of the ACC. Pitt will open the year with a highly anticipated showdown against defending ACC and Orange Bowl champion Florida State on Labor Day (Sept. 2) at Heinz Field. The ESPN national telecast will kick off at 8 p.m.

The Pitt-FSU contest marks the ACC’s 10th consecutive game on Labor Day night, a streak that began in 2004. The Panthers, who officially join the ACC on July 1, will be making their initial appearance in the Labor Day primetime game. The Seminoles will be making their sixth appearance in this showcase slot.
