Power Drop Divisional Matchup to Gladiators, 55-28

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Monday, April 28th, 2014 – 8:30 am

The Pittsburgh Power Arena Football team (3-3) traveled to Cleveland, OH, to take on the undefeated Cleveland Gladiators (6-0) tonight. At the Quicken Loans Arena in front of a crowd of 11,087, the Power were unable to stop the Gladiators with a final score of 55-28.
Winning the coin toss, Cleveland elected to receive the opening kickoff. On their first possession, quarterback Shane Austin connected with wide receiver Dominick Goodman in the end zone to take the early lead over Pittsburgh, 7-0. On the ensuing drive, the Power could not get down the field and ended up turning the ball over on downs allowing the Gladiators field position on Pittsburgh’s own eight-yard line. Taking advantage, Austin ran the ball in the end zone increasing Cleveland’s lead, 14-0. Pittsburgh’s second attempt resulted in another turnover on downs and Cleveland made a touchdown out of it for the 21-point lead. Grady stepped it up on the team’s third possession finding wide receiver Shaun Kauleinamoku for a 41-yard touchdown pass and Pittsburgh’s first score of the night. The first quarter ended with Cleveland ahead 21-7.
The second quarter opened with the Power’s first offensive stop of the night making the Gladiators turn the ball over on downs. With the stop, Pittsburgh worked their way down the field and fullback Tommy Taggart carried the ball in for the touchdown. The Power decreased Cleveland’s lead to 21-14. The Gladiators went on to punch in two more touchdowns capturing a 35-14 lead. With :04 seconds remaining in the half, Grady completed to wide receiver Rodney Wright and cut the Power’s deficit to 14. Cleveland then ended the second quarter with kicker Pettrey connecting a 33-yard field goal for the 38-21 lead.
Pittsburgh received the ball to start the third quarter and after getting an automatic first down on a fourth down attempt off a Gladiator’s holding penalty, Grady capitalized and connected a five-yard pass to Kauleinamoku in the end zone to cut their deficit to ten. Cleveland answered with Austin finding tight end Jason Jones for the touchdown and going ahead 45-28 over Pittsburgh.
Cleveland grabbed the first score of the fourth quarter with a 44-yard field goal completion by Pettrey, increasing their lead to 20 points, 48-28. On the ensuing drive, Wright fumbled the ball on the Gladiator’s 7-yard line. With the turnover, Cleveland went down the field and Austin connected with Goodman for his third touchdown grab of the night and increased their lead to 55-28 with just under three minutes to play. The clock ran out without either team scoring again.
The Pittsburgh Power return home next week hosting East Division rivals Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, May 3. Kickoff at CONSOL Energy Center is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET.

PITTSBURGH RIVERHOUNDS, CHARLESTON BATTERY END IN 0-0 DRAW

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Saturday, April 26th, 2014 – 9:42 pm

On Saturday night at Highmark Stadium, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Charleston Battery, two teams looking for their elusive first win in USL PRO League play, battled to a 0-0 draw.

The Riverhounds dominated possession, but ultimately were not able to generate a goal.

“We did a decent job, our midfield was dominant, but it’s a shame we couldn’t turn that dominance into goals,” said Joseph Ngwenya, Riverhounds midfielder.

The best chance of the match for the Riverhounds came in the 48th minute. After receiving a nice ball from Rob Vincent at the top of the 18 yard box, midfielder Kevin Kerr sent a stinging ball toward the right side of Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper, who made a nice lunging save.

As the rest of the second half unfolded, strong early winds that were prevalent in the first half, died down a bit, and it became clear the Riverhounds were controlling the ball in large chunks, and the Battery were taking their chances on the counter attack.

In the 55th minute, the Battery set up a trio of consecutive corners after a nice sequence on the left side that was deflected by the Riverhounds. Despite probing with multiple chances in a row from corners, the Battery could not convert, as Riverhounds goalkeeper Michael Lisch held strong, despite being knocked around in the box a few times.

In the 70th minute, Vincent had a nice chance, with a shot from outside the box that was on target, but Cooper was able to get to it. Forward Jason Johnson followed that up a minute later with a left footed shot that sailed low and left of the post.

In the late stages, despite continued pressure, good finishing opportunities were elusive for the home team.

Riverhounds midfielder Matt Dallman played a nice ball into the box in the 86th minute from the right side after receiving a nice pass back from Ngwenya. However, as the ball sailed toward the box, Cooper came out and made a strong play on the ball, colliding with forward Mike Seth. Seth was shaken up and had to be helped off the field, but would come back into play.

In stoppage time, the Battery’s Adam Mena had a potential breakaway chance, but Lisch came out make a nice open field play on the ball.

As the final seconds ticked down, Ngwenya made a nice run toward the end line to the right of the goal. He went down, was knocked over, but only after the ball was deflected out for a corner. If Ngwenya was able to keep the ball in play, he could have potentially drawn a penalty.

The Riverhounds failed to convert on the corner and the game ended in a draw.

In the first half, playing into a strong wind, Riverhounds played well enough to set up three corner kicks and a few set pieces, although they didn’t have any clear cut chances, and only one shot on goal.

“The wind played a factor there in the first half. Not being able to connect on crosses. That seemed to be the theme all night,” said Justin Evans, Riverhounds Head Coach.

“We were putting the ball in dangerous areas, but not able to convert.”

Ngwenya was very active on the ball, along with Joseph Obodai, as both did a nice job providing the Riverhounds with the advantage despite lots of pressure from the Battery midfield throughout much of the match.

“They were sitting in a 4-5-1, and we were able to get our midfield to keep the ball, and that’s what we wanted,” said Evans.

The Battery counter attack created a few chances too.

Obadai was given a yellow card in the 20th minute after Battery forward Omar Salgado was making a nice run in space. The 5’8″ Obodai, caught up to 6’4″ Salgado, taking the bigger man down about 35 yards out.

Charleston’s Quinton Griffith’s free kick sailed over the bar.

Riverhounds goalkeeper, Michael Lisch faced three shots in the first half, making one save on Salgado early on from about 30 yards.

Facing a number of players out of the lineup this week, Evans kept the starting line up in the game for the entire 90 plus minutes.

“That was difficult, we had to do what we had to do. I thought the guys that went in and played, played very well. We only dressed 17, so we were a little short on the bench. I thought we were doing well enough, that I didn’t have to bring in anyone,” said Evans.

Riverhounds were without their leading scorers, Jose Angulo wasn’t here due to a death in the family, Collins John was serving the second of his three game suspension, and Jhonny Arteaga, who scored last week, was out with an injury. Brian Ownby had been called up mid-week by the Houston Dynamo.

Early in a season where the Riverhounds have not been able to come up with a complete performance, Evans felt it was the most complete game they’ve played this season.

“We’ve had bad starts. We’ve had to change things up in previous games, coming on strong late. But today was our best overall effort for 90 minutes,” said Evans.

The Riverhounds outshot the Battery 7 to 5, and in a game that was played heavily in the midfield, with lots of physical challenges, they were able to draw 13 fouls.

Lisch made a total of four saves, and Cooper came up with two to keep the game scoreless.

“Hopefully the next game, we can turn our dominance into chances and goals,” said Ngwenya.

“That’s what it’s all about at this level.”

Steelers 2014 Schedule

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, April 24th, 2014 – 9:12 am

The Steelers will play five nationally televised primetime games, it was announced tonight when the NFL released its 2014 regular season schedule.

The Steelers will play AFC North Division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, in two primetime games, including the first-ever CBS Sports Thursday night game in Week 2 on Sept. 11 at M&T Bank Stadium at 8:25 p.m. Pittsburgh will host the Ravens in Week 9 at Heinz Field on Sunday Night Football (NBC) with kickoff set for 8:30 p.m.

Pittsburgh’s three other nationally televised primetime games include a Week 7 (Oct. 20) matchup versus the Houston Texans at Heinz Field on Monday Night Football (ESPN, 8:30 p.m.). The Steelers play at the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 (Sept. 21) on Sunday Night Football (NBC, 8:30 p.m.) and also travel to Tennessee for a matchup against the Titans on Monday Night Football (ESPN, 8:30 p.m.) in Week 11 (Nov. 17).

“Our 2014 schedule is highlighted by two national televised games against the Ravens as well as another nationally televised game at Heinz Field in Week 7 versus the Houston Texans,” Steelers President Art Rooney II said. “We are excited about playing five primetime games as it will give our fans around the world the opportunity to see us play. This season marks the 40th anniversary of our Super Bowl IX victory and we look forward to celebrating that milestone during our home schedule.”

The Steelers will be playing two Monday Night Football contests for the first time since 2008. For the second consecutive year, Pittsburgh will open its season at Heinz Field, this time with a 1 p.m. game against divisional rival, the Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers’ bye week will be on Nov. 23 (Week 12).

For the first time, flexible scheduling may be applied in Weeks 5-10. During that period, flexible scheduling can be used in no more than two weeks by shifting a Sunday afternoon game into primetime and moving the Sunday night game to an afternoon start time. Also, for the first time, a select number of games are being “cross-flexed,” moving between CBS and FOX to bring potentially under-distributed games to wider audiences.

“Flexible scheduling” will be used in Weeks 11-17 as it has been in recent years. In Weeks 11-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights.

A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game. For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to December 28. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

Thursday Night Football games this upcoming season will air on CBS and the NFL Network. CBS will televise eight early season games that will also be simulcast on the NFL Network. The NFL Network will also televise eight late season contests as the postseason approaches. The 16-game slate will include 14 games on Thursday nights and two late-season games on Saturday. All broadcasts will feature CBS Sports announcers along with NFL Network hosts and analysts.

Fans can listen to every Steelers game throughout the preseason and the regular season on the Steelers Radio Network on WDVE-FM (102.5) and WBGG-AM (970).
