Major League Baseball announced that Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen, Gerrit Cole, A.J. Burnett and Mark Melancon have been named to the National League All-Star team for this year’s All-Star Game in Cincinnati. This is the fifth straight year the Pirates will send multiple representatives to the Midsummer Classic and the first since a 12-year run of multiple representatives from 1958 to 1969.
This is the fifth consecutive time McCutchen has been named to the All-Star team. He is the first Pirates position player to be named to five straight Midsummer Classics since Roberto Clemente was selected to eight consecutive All-Star Games from 1960-1967. The only other players in team history to be named to at least five All-Star teams were Hall-of-Famers Roberto Clemente (12 times), Arky Vaughan (eight times), Willie Stargell and Bill Mazeroski (seven times each) and Ralph Kiner (five times).
Since McCutchen’s first All-Star season in 2011, he ranks first among all National League players in doubles (161), second in hits (784) and extra base hits (295), third in on-base percentage (.394) and RBI (403), fourth in batting average (.304), fifth in slugging percentage (.512) and home runs (110) and sixth in OPS (.906) The 28-year-old McCutchen was selected to this year’s contest by the players.

John Cena’s 2015 by Dan Mader

published in category: Wrestling Reality on Tuesday, July 7th, 2015 – 8:57 am

2015 has been John Cena’s most watchable and most successful year of his career.

His main event US Title match against Cesaro was one of the best RAW main events I have ever seen. Hell, it might have been the best RAW match ever. The only match I could think of that could top it would be Cena/Punk for the #1 Contendership.

trib-live-radio

John Cena has been an actual must-see attraction more this year than any other in his career. Although Cena has been the face of the WWE since his rise to the World Title scene in 2005, he has been viewed as a stale competitor who “never puts many guys over”. This year has proven all of those people wrong.

Beginning at the Royal Rumble when Cena battled Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title, his performances grew in awe and entertainment. That match has been a Match of the Year candidate since January and it has been rivaled by only a few matches. After unsuccessfully challenging for the World Title, Cena set his sights on the US Title, held by Rusev. With the US/Russia heavy storyline being the focus, the fact that Cena was actually determined to hold the a “lesser, midcard” title was garnering interest in the whole wrestling community.

Everyone knew that after Cena had defeated Rusev at WrestleMania 31, in addition with the addition of some new moves in his arsenal, that 2015 was beginning to look bright for Cena. Starting with the RAW after WrestleMania, Cena began issuing his “John Cena US Title Open Challenge”, where anyone could challenge him for the belt. This gave a ton of superstars the opportunity to shine on a weekly basis and the list of men who have had the best match of the night (RAW or PPV) with Cena is staggering.

Neville
Sami Zayn
Cesaro
Dean Ambrose
Zack Ryder
Bad News Barrett
Stardust

The man I omitted from that list is Kevin Owens. This is because he is by far the most elevated star due to Cena’s run with the US Title. After answering the challenge, the then NXT Champion made it known that he had a disdain for Cena like no one else. He even defeated Cena clean in his first match on the main roster at Elimination Chamber. Then, their match at Money in the Bank stole the show as well. With WWE Battleground looming, and the rubber match between Cena and Owens being contested for the United States Title, the stock of Kevin Owens and the performances of John Cena will only continue to be elevated into a new stratosphere.

With moves such as the Springboard Stunner, Hurricanrana, and Rolling Yoshi Tonic all being new weapons of John Cena and the drive of Cena to elevate new stars at an all time high, the second half of 2015 for Cena shall be just as successful and entertaining as the first.

The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed first baseman Travis Ishikawa off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 25-man roster upon Ishikawa’s arrival in Pittsburgh. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.
The 31-year-old Ishikawa went 0-for-5 in six games this year with the Giants after beginning the year on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. He also hit a combined .266 (38-for-143) with nine doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI in 37 games between Single-A San Jose and Triple-A Sacramento in 2015.
This will be Ishikawa’s second stint with the Pirates after making the team last season out of spring training as a non-roster invitee. He was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on April 19, 2014, before signing a minor league contract with San Francisco on April 25.

Riverhounds win easy

published in category: Riverhounds on Monday, July 6th, 2015 – 8:47 am

Two goals from Rob Vincent powered the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to a 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls II Saturday night at Highmark Stadium.

706riv15

The English midfielder capitalized on a broken play at the visitors’ end of the field on 41 minutes to blast a 30-yard drive past Red Bulls goalkeeper Santi Castano. Vincent put the icing on the cake with eight minutes remaining to bring his league tally to 11 goals in 15 games and set the Hounds off to a winning start to the second half of the USL regular season.

Substitute Tyler Pasher had given the Hounds a two-goal cushion on 74 minutes with a perfectly placed header to convert Matt Dallman’s cross.

The Hounds (6-5-4, 22 points) leapfrog the visitors with the win to move into fifth place in the USL’s Eastern Conference. The Red Bulls stay on 22 points with a 6-6-4 record.

New York failed to match the Hounds fireworks on this Fourth of July cracker. John Wolyniec’s men failed to create any decent scoring chances with Pittsburgh defenders Anthony Arena and Fejiro Okiomah dealing with everything that came their way.

The Hounds entered Saturday’s game with their share of adversity. Head coach Mark Steffens and assistant Niko Katic were both suspended one game for protesting last week’s late penalty call at the Rochester Rhinos.

Captain Danny Earls and defender Willie Hunt were also serving one game bans following last week’s loss to the league leaders.

The Hounds leave Tuesday for a Canadian double-header against Toronto F.C. II on July 8 and F.C. Montreal on July 12. Both games will be streamed live on Riverhounds.com. Check our website for kickoff times and full game details.
