A Look at the Trade Deadline: a Month Later by Nathan Hursh

published in category: Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, September 1st, 2015 – 9:17 am

When this year’s Trade Deadline passed, many looked at the Pirates with some question, as they didn’t make any headline deals. To some, the perception was that these were the same old Pirates with an owner who didn’t want to spend money on superstar talent and a GM who didn’t want to give up any highly regarded prospects to acquire such talent. The Pirates weren’t “going for it” like teams such as the Royals and Blue Jays and their quiet trade deadline acquisitions proved just that. In reality, we can clearly see how untrue that is. Not only did the Pirates fill out their positional needs, they did so in an incredibly cheap and efficient manner.

901pir

Aramis Ramirez:
The NL Central journeyman got off to a slow start when he made his return to Pittsburgh recording only four hits in his first 34 at-bats. Since then, Ramirez has slashed a .304/.360/.443 line with seven extra base hits and has even driven in 18 runs. He did this while starting at third base for the Bucs and with the return of Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer, Clint Hurdle has said Ramirez will now have a more reduced role coming off of the bench and starting only a few nights a week. Having that kind of production off of the bench will be huge.
Joakim Soria:
The former Tigers’ closer has been everything the Pirates have needed to bolster their bullpen. In 12.1 innings for the Pirates, Soria has only given up three earned runs and has struck out 11 batters. More importantly, he has locked down the seventh inning and has shortened games for the Pirates. If a Pittsburgh starter goes six innings with a lead, one has to feel pretty confident the Pirates will win the game with the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings going to Soria, Watson, and Melancon.
Joe Blanton:
The 34-year-old righty has been undeniably fantastic for the Pirates. In 18.1 innings with Pittsburgh, Blanton has given up only one run and has compiled 23 strikeouts. His only run given up was in his first appearance with the Pirates. He has been almost perfect in his last 16.1 innings and hasn’t given up a run in a month. Joe Blanton has been a clear upgrade over Vance Worley as the Pirates long-man reliever.
Mike Morse:
Morse hasn’t logged a great amount of playing time since joining the Pirates but in the time he has played, he has done well. In mostly platoon and pinch-hitting roles, Morse has 10 hits in 33 at-bats with two doubles. He brings an experienced right-handed power bat off of the bench and was a big part of the San Francisco Giants World Series run last year.
J.A. Happ:
The 32-year-old lefty may be the biggest surprise of the Trade Deadline up to this point. In five starts with the Pirates, Happ is 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA. That is the lowest ERA among starting pitchers traded at the deadline. If you take out his first start where he gave up four runs in 4.1 innings, Happ has a 0.78 ERA. Although this success may not be sustainable over a long period of time, Happ has been an outstanding replacement for AJ Burnett and has stamped his name into the rotation when AJ returns. What’s more incredible is that Happ was in the midst of a pretty terrible rough patch when he came to Pittsburgh. Much of the credit has to go to Ray Searage and Jim Benedict who at this point could probably turn a washing machine into a Cy Young candidate.

901sear

This Trade Deadline, the Pirates did what they always do. They find value in players that so many other teams overlook and they exploit the heck out of it. The Pirates do such an incredible job of buying low and fixing, especially at the major league level. There is really no need for them to go out and get the David Price’s and Johnny Cueto’s of the world when they can get J.A. Happ to do the same exact thing. The Pittsburgh Pirates are among the best in the majors at squeezing as much production as possible out of any player and that is a huge reason why they will be heading to their third straight postseason as a legitimate World Series contender.

Shifting from Vick to Bryant by Tim Benz

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, August 31st, 2015 – 6:57 pm

I think I’ve made my stance on the Steelers signing Mike Vick pretty clear. I hate it. I hate him. I think his crimes are vile and beyond forgiveness. And his presence on this roster prevents me from being able to root for this club the same way I had my whole life.

831vick

No, I haven’t cooled off. Yes, I still think it’s THAT bad. That emotional detachment came in handy Saturday night though as the Bills were beating Pittsburgh 43-19. (Ok, let me edit myself for a second here. ANY pre-season game should be covered with emotional detachment.) Because if I did have my heart in that game…imagine how concerned I’d be!?

Damn, that was ugly! The Bills have a good team. But a lot of it (Shady McCoy, Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin) were out. And the biggest question mark is at QB. Yet the rag tag bunch of Bills signal callers (EJ Manuel,Tyrod Taylor, Matt Simms, Matt Cassel) went a combined 30-33 for 386 with 3 TD and 0 INT for a 142 rating. If that stat line were one person, he’d be the love baby of Joe Montana and Tom Brady.

Indeed. The Steeler defense is almost as repugnant as what Vick did to those dogs. But if you are looking at one guy to really be pissed at after Saturday night, it’s Martavis Bryant.

Bryant?! Why Bryant you say? He was awesome after all. The second year wideout grabbed three pases on three targets for 138 yards and a TD. Plus he drew two big pass interference calls. He even made Vick look good along the way (which, to show I’m fair, wasn’t hard. Vick looked good under adverse circumstances given that he was allowed all of five minutes to learn a whole offense. From a football standpoint this was a good move).

831bryant

Bryant was a monster. He’s getting the basics. And physically, you can’t cover him.
My God, just throw it up there and he’ll draw a pass interference call if you keep it in the same area code. Can you believe how easy it is to play offense with a 6’6” 200+ pound specimen like that on the team.

Yet with every play I would think that Steeler fans were getting more and more angry. Because just a few days beforehand we learned he’d be facing a four game suspension due to repeated marijuana use.

This beast who is dominating in a meaningless game had just smoked himself into a four game stint in the press box for the real action! At some point, whenever his appeal is over, all that talent is going to be sidelined because…well, because Martavis Bryant appears to be stupid beyond repair.

According to multiple outlets, Bryant has failed four different drug tests since he got into the league. And that’s why he is going to be shelved for so long. The NFL loosened its policy on pot because it didn’t want to pinch guys for rolling a joint as they were doing for steroids. So basically, they tried to make it impossible to get suspended for just smoking weed, because guys also now know when the test is initially coming before they fail the first time and get in the program.

So what the league saying is: “We don’t really want to push out the pot smokers. We just want to push out the dumbasses. Let’s just kick out the ones who are so incredibly stupid that if they can’t avoid these pot restrictions, they might be just dumb enough to be the next Vick.”

And no, I’m not saying that to take a snarky shot.

Unfortunately the wildly talented Bryant appears to be in this category. Bryant is very much a reason why the 30pt/game offense predictions were legit for the Steelers this year. At 3-3 the Steeler offense was at 20.6 points per game after Bryant sat out the first six weeks of the 2014 season. After he was inserted into the line-up, the team went 8-2 down the stretch and averaged more than 31 points per game. He scored eight times along the way and tallied 549 yards.

Should he serve the suspension to start the year, this doubles down on the absence of Le’Veon Bell for the first two weeks due to his equally moronic smoking and driving suspension from a year ago. Even if the suspension is put off for a while (even into next year) Bryant’s absence will still be a major pinch.

With the outlook on defense being as dour as it is, Steeler fans at least had the right to hope that their offense could score its way into a second straight divisional crown. And at the very least the prospect could’ve been that you’d be looking at a mediocre but supremely exciting wild card contender. But now with Bryant’s suspension looming, Bell’s assured, Maurkice Pouncey’s 8-10 week injury, and whatever kicker is teed up behind door number three; this broad shouldered offense looks a lot less capable of carrying the load.

And Bryant should be blamed heavily. Let’s avoid the pot-politics of legalization and the debates between bud and Bud (or Coors, or whatever your preference). Rules are rules. And the NFL’s have become a lot less strict. Yet Bryant couldn’t stay clean.

As my twitter timeline over the Vick signing will tell you, a lot of Steeler fans are feeling pretty preachy about forgive and forget as it relates to Vick. I’ll debate that. But nobody should cast aspersions at Steeler fans for holding a grudge against Bryant for the four games he will be out. It’s an unnecessary, painful loss (whenever it happens), and Steeler fans have a right to be mad over losing what they could have been watching in #10.

The Laird Log by Ken Laird

published in category: College Sports, Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, August 27th, 2015 – 2:58 pm

— It’s worth noting that the Steelers Organization won our weekly Jagoff of the Week award on TribLIVE Radio Wednesday, narrowly defeating ‘people who are upset with the Michael Vick signing’. So, by our very informal poll, we have a nearly-split audience of Steelers fans in regards to how they feel about Vick signing on as the new Steelers backup QB. Mike Tomlin came in third place in the voting for his perceived influence on the signing (their hometown connection), and owner Art Rooney II came in fourth.

827vick15

— Our newest host Tim Benz, by the way, finished a strong fifth place in JOTW voting for his impassioned anger towards the Steelers for bringing Vick in. But give Benzie credit, he asked the tough questions of Vick in the locker room on Wednesday, including “How do you sleep at night?”

— I’m fine with the Vick signing, by the way. He’s better than Landry Jones, it’s been six years since time served, and he proved last year against Pittsburgh he can still win a game, and with a much worse offense at that. This is sport, derived from the word ‘disport’, or “to divert oneself”. Sports are an escape, not a social institution of pristine character importance. Of course there needs to be some moral standard of behavior to uphold, but Vick has suffered plenty for his mistakes and he’s an entertainer; he’s not teaching our kids or determining national policy. I’m willing to keep watching him as he gets his second chance.

— My Jagoff vote was a pre-emptive one for playcaller Todd Haley, because I was petrified he would actually sometimes play Vick over Roethlisberger by using a wicky-wacky collection of plays or wasting precious two-point conversion attempts. My vote was unfounded however, as Haley later told Trib Total Media’s Mark Kaboly that he’d “have to think twice” about taking Ben off the field. Let’s hope that second thought limits Vick usage to only-injury-situations.

— So far in the preseason, NFL teams are 100 for 105 on extra points (95%) and 14-for-31 (45%) on two-point tries. So basically given this limited data, it still makes more sense to take the “automatic” one point. However, it’s close, and I’m curious to see how Week 3 goes with better offensive personnel on the field for longer stretches. If a team can convert at 50% from two-point land, it simply makes more sense over the long haul to go for the two. And I believe this Steelers offense has what it takes to convert at 50%.

— Keeping in mind, coaches still need to be smart in the fourth quarter and use time and score as their guide of when and when-not to chase the extra points.

— Like many, my favorite new Steelers player to watch this preseason has been undrafted QB/WR Tyler Murphy. It sounds like he won’t play much this week in the team’s fourth (of five) preseason games at Buffalo, but he might play a ton in the final exhibition game. He’d be a steal if they can keep him on the practice squad, and I would even consider keeping him on the 53-man roster over Dri Archer or Landry Jones depending on how he finishes camp. That, though, will never happen. It will take an injury for Murphy to make it.

— They should have given Murphy more looks at QB dating back to minicamp instead of wasting time with Tahj Boyd. Or Landry.

— Tyler Murphy would be the perfect player for an NFL Development League. I’d watch a Tuesday or Wednesday night Steelers B-Team game if he was at QB. Or at WR.

— We talked some Penn State football on our show Wednesday with their defensive coordinator, and Oakmont native, Bob Shoop. Shoop had a few interesting things to say:

In regards to being back at full scholarship after the lifting of sanctions, Shoop noted that “a lot of our depth are really good young players. I think we were the first or second youngest team in the country last year, and it’ll be very similar this year. A lot of the players we’re counting on to be good players for us are young players. On defense specifically, we lost some pretty mature guys in Mike Hull, Deion Barnes, and Adrian Amos. It’s hard to replace game experience.”

On their first opponent, Temple, Shoop said “they really should have been in a bowl game last year. They have a really dynamic quarterback in P.J. Walker who is very versatile. They have a center named Kyle Friend who anchors a really good offensive line that returns a lot of guys. They return their top running back Jahad Thomas. They’ve got our attention.”

And in talking about his own unit, Shoop evaluated each level of the D:

Defensive Line – “We lost three of our top four defensive ends off last year’s squad. Questions I’ve had, Garrett Sickels has answered the bell as a guy we think has a chance to be an All-Conference player. Carl Nassib, same thing. Where people might look at DE and say we lost some productivity, we think we can be every bit as good and productive as last year.”

Linebacker – “You lose a guy like Mike Hull, Nyeem Wartman-White has stepped into the middle linebacker position and really excelled at calling signals for our defense. He understands the scheme inside and out, has embraced that role. When he moved in there, Jason Cabinda took his spot at outside linebacker, he’s had maybe as good and consistent camp as anybody we’ve had.”

Secondary – “We moved Jordan Lucas from corner to safety, he and Marcus Allen have had as consistent a camp as we can ask. They’ve been really solid, communicated well, been in position, taking great angles, tackled well, played the ball well. And when we moved Jordan inside the opportunity on the outside for young corners, Grant Haley and a freshman named John Reid have really had an exceptional camp at the boundary corner for us.”

827pitt15

— Talking Pitt football with Trib Total Media beat writer Jerry DiPaola on Thursday, I was curious how important he thinks freshman Jordan Whitehead will be to the team this year. Jerry said “he’s in a battle with Patrick Amara and Jevonte Pitts for the strong safety position. We don’t see much 11-on-11 but the vibes I’m getting, he’s stepping up. Josh Conklin, the defensive coordinator, brags about Whitehead almost every time we talk to him. We asked him, ‘what’s more important, lining up properly or making plays?’ And Conklin said, ‘making plays’. Whitehead has the kind of athletic ability, if he lines up wrong, or makes a wrong read, he can catch up or still make the play. It’ll be really tough to keep him out of the starting lineup.”

Riverhounds hot streak needs to start now by Michael Grau

published in category: Riverhounds on Thursday, August 27th, 2015 – 8:40 am

It’s time for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to go on a hot streak. There are five matches remaining on the club’s 2015 regular season schedule, and the organization’s focus is on returning to the USL playoffs after a yearlong absence. The middle of the pack is crowded in USL’s Eastern Conference. There are six teams within 7 points of one another, fighting for four playoff spots. The math gets tricky when you factor in games-in-hand and head-to-heads, but the general consensus seem to be that 40 points gets you in. Pittsburgh needs eight points in their last five matches (3 for a win, 1 for a draw) to reach that total. After last week’s loss against Charlotte, Pittsburgh lost autonomy of their playoff destiny. They have to win, and they’ll need some other results to break their way.

827riv

The club travels to Louisville City FC on Saturday night. Both of Lou City’s trips to Highmark Stadium ended in heartbreak for the Hounds. An injury time equalizer from Kadeem Acres back in April, and a “Meghan Klingenberg Night”-ruining winner by ex-Hound forward Matt Fondy on July 18th meant precious home points dropped. A draw on their first-ever trip to Louisville would be a positive result.
Next Saturday night, against Charleston (4 points ahead of Pittsburgh, but the Battery have played one more match) at Highmark Stadium, will be a big one. There has been a decent amount of “big game” atmosphere in Station Square for Hounds matches this summer. As far as playoff implications, this will be the biggest (that is, of course, until the one after that) match of the season. The match against Charleston will largely determine if the Riverhounds are playing their last three matches for a home playoff game, or fighting for their playoff lives. This has been a long way of saying that the playoff race will look very different on Labor Day. If the Hounds manage 4 points between now and then, they’ll be in good shape, but earning those 4 points will require their best.
This club is capable of playing entertaining, attractive, FUN soccer. Whether they win, lose, or draw, they deliver maximum on-field drama. Their goal scoring record is phenomenal, and the midfield trio of Rob Vincent, Kevin Kerr, and Lebo Moloto produce vine-able highlights on a regular basis, despite the absence of a reliable center forward easing the offensive burden. Several players have shown flashes in that role, but none have displayed a consistent ability to add goals and create chances. Occasionally, that midfield-reliant attack has left them exposed at the back, and that’s understandable. Injuries also contributed to the defensive woes. Currently, the Riverhounds are as healthy as they have been all season, and I’m curious to see head coach Mark Steffens’s selections for the back four during these crucial upcoming games. Steffens’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ryan Thompson, has had a phenomenal summer. Unfortunately for Hounds and USMNT fans, his accomplishments have come while he was away on international duty at Copa America and the Gold Cup for Jamaica. Thompson is now back between the sticks for the closing stretch.

827riv2

It’s going to be a month’s worth of “squeaky bum time” for the Riverhounds and their supporters. It’s a pivotal time. Missing the playoffs for a second year in a row is not what the organization had in mind when they brought in an accomplished, decorated coaching staff. I can only promise one thing about how their season will play out: it won’t be boring.

Vick reaction pours in

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 – 1:41 pm

The Steelers for signing Mike Vick and people who are upset at the Steelers for signing Mike Vick are the top two candidates as we crown the Jag-Off of the Week, find out who won plus Chris Adamski from the Steelers Facility.

826vick2

The Steelers signed veteran quarterback Michael Vick to a one-year contract, the team announced today. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Vick is entering his 13th season in the NFL in 2015. The 6-0, 215-pound Virginia Tech product was selected with the first overall selection by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL Draft and remained with the Falcons through 2006. He was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009 and spent five years with the Eagles before joining the New York Jets in 2014.

In 12 NFL seasons, Vick has appeared in 138 games (112 starts) and completed 1,767-of-3,151 passes for 22,093 yards with 131 touchdowns and added 6,010 rushing yards and 36 rushing touchdowns on 853 rushing attempts. Vick, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, also earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year accolades in 2010.

To make room for Vick on the roster, the Steelers placed quarterback Bruce Gradkowski on the team’s Reserve/Injured List. Gradkowski joined the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent in 2013. He entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, and has spent nine seasons in the NFL with stints in Tampa Bay (2006-07), Cleveland (2008), Oakland (2009-10), Cincinnati (2011-12) and Pittsburgh (2013-current). He has thrown for 4,057 yards on 375-of-709 passing with 21 touchdowns in 37 games (20 starts) in his NFL career.
