The Steelers placed center Maurkice Pouncey on the team’s Reserve/Injured; Designated For Return List.

The rule, adopted in 2012, permits Pouncey to return to practice after spending at least six weeks on the team’s Reserve/Injured List. The first game Pouncey is eligible to play in is the team’s Week Nine game vs. Oakland on November 8.

Pouncey injured his right leg in the team’s preaseason victory against Green Bay on August 23 at Heinz Field.

The Steelers signed center/guard Doug Legursky to take Pouncey’s spot on the roster. He will wear No. 64.

James Conner out for season

published in category: College Sports on Monday, September 7th, 2015 – 8:21 pm

Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi announced today that junior running back James Conner, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, will undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee for a torn medial collateral ligament.

Conner (Erie, Pa./McDowell) sustained the injury during the second quarter of Pitt’s 45-37 win over Youngstown State. Initially thought to be less severe, further testing and evaluation on Sunday revealed the MCL tear.

“Even with all of his success last year, James attacked his preparation for this season like he was fighting to earn a starting spot,” Narduzzi said. “He is a tremendous competitor and teammate. After he was injured on Saturday, James was constantly in the ear of his teammates, encouraging them and coaching them on the sideline. Our entire program shares his disappointment but we will also be behind him every step of the way in his recovery.”

“I greatly appreciate everyone’s support and well wishes,” Conner said. “This is a temporary setback and I’m going to work even harder to bounce back. Even though I won’t be able to play this season, I’m going to be right beside my teammates and help them every way I can to have a great season.”

Conner entered this season as one of college football’s most decorated players. He was selected the 2014 ACC Player of the Year after rushing for 1,765 yards and 26 touchdowns. Conner broke three Pitt season records—rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns (26) and scoring (156 points)—set by the legendary Tony Dorsett during his 1976 Heisman Trophy campaign.

Conner was named to seven postseason All-America squads as a sophomore, including first-team honors from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). He was the first Pitt running back to garner first-team All-America honors in 27 years, dating back to Craig “Ironhead” Heyward in 1987.

The Panthers (1-0) play at Akron (0-1) this Saturday at 6 p.m.

Steelers vs. Patriots

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, September 7th, 2015 – 8:10 pm

If the Steelers win their opener on Thursday in Foxboro, I’d argue that it would be the biggest road upset in the Mike Tomlin era.

907st

There have been plenty of shocking road losses in the Tomlin era where Pittsburgh had been the big favorite. A few in Cleveland, Tennessee, and Oakland leap to mind. But road wins where the Steelers have been the big underdogs pale in comparison.

One does stick out though. It was that 23-20 upset of the Ravens in Baltimore with Charlie Batch at QB back in 2012. Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich were both hurt. The club had just puked up eight turnovers in a loss to the Browns the week before. Yet somehow Batch spun a masterful 276 yard performance, and the Steelers put up 17 second half points for a significant surprise win that kept them alive (momentarily) in the AFC North race.

The Vegas line for that one opened at -8.5 with the Ravens favored. It got down to -7 at kickoff.

And that’s exactly where the Steelers sit now. A touchdown underdog heading into what is expected to be a #DeflateGate induced cauldron at Gillette Stadium. Cam Heyward says the feeling is reminiscent. “It is a little bit like that because we had some of our guys out in that game, we didn’t have Ben, and we needed a lot of other guys to step up.” said Heyward reminding us of the looming Game 1 absences of star players such as Le’Veon Bell, Martavis Bryant, Shaun Suisham, and Maurkice Pouncey. “In this case though, we do have #7.”

Yes. That’s true. But unfortunately for Heyward and his defensive mates a judge ruled that the NFL’s four game suspension of Tom Brady was unjust. So the Pats will have #12. That victory in New England was hailed almost as much as the actual Super Bowl win back in February which the team’s fans will be celebrating…no doubt maniacally.

“When they schedule this game to honor the defending champs, I’m sure the view from the outside perspective is that the visiting team is just supposed to be part of the show and play their part so to speak,” said Steelers tight end Heath Miller.

Good characterization. So will the Steelers be the Washington Generals to the Brady-fueled New England Globetrotters? “I think we are preparing to go in and play a good football game and win the game,” Miller stated.

Hardly Namath pool side. But by Heath’s normal intentionally dry standards, that was Matt Foley motivational speaker stuff!

Whether it’s playing the “us against the world” card, or clinging onto a reference point of some other upset, it’s best for the Steelers to leverage a mental edge now. After all, Pittsburgh’s winless history in Foxboro against Brady and that massive 55-31 beat down they endured up there in 2013 seems to be a daunting mental hurdle.
“We’ve been there. It’s one of the things we can’t re-do. That’s going to be a hostile environment. We’ve gotta come out hot. We can’t come out slow.” said offensive lineman Ramon Foster. “At the end of the day, it’s just them and us. And the best team is going to win.”

And therein lies the dilemma. It is just them vs the Steelers. And the Patriots appear to be the vastly superior team right now. Their shortcomings on defense seem to be exceeded by Pittsburgh’s. And Pittsburgh’s strengths on offense and special teams seem to weakened by injury and suspension.

For all those reasons New England comes off as a lay up bet to start 1-0 and hand Pittsburgh a defeat in their first road game of the season for a fourth straight year. Unless of course the Steelers can “play a different part, so to speak” like they did in Baltimore three years ago.

Hounds Outside Playoff Zone

published in category: Riverhounds on Sunday, September 6th, 2015 – 9:25 am

Ten seconds separated the Pittsburgh Riverhounds from fifth place in the United Soccer League’s Eastern Conference Saturday night.

Ten seconds of injury time remained at Highmark Stadium when the Charleston Battery tossed a speculative long throw into the Hounds’ penalty area looking to salvage a point after falling behind to Kevin Kerr’s ninth league goal of the season.

A flick on fell to Ricky Garbanzo at the edge of the box. His shot veered toward the 6-yard line where the lurking Mikael Chang redirected it into Calle Brown’s far corner with a deft touch. 1-1. Virtual fifth place had become seventh.

“We’ve got to continue to find ways as a team to close games out,” said Hounds assistant coach Josh Rife after a frustrating evening on the South Side.

The Hounds made one change to the 11 starters that defeated Louisville City in Kentucky last weekend. Leading scorer Rob Vincent was forced to miss his first game of the season through suspension after picking up his fifth caution of the season. Vincent’s place was taken by the returning Danny Earls after the Hounds captain sat out last week’s 1-0 win.

Both teams started cautiously to prevent any early mistakes that could have hurt their postseason chances. Action picked up on 16 minutes when Ben Newnam’s cross eventually landed at Boris Zivanovic’s feet. Battery defender Taylor Mueller blocked the Serbian’s shot.

Charleston counterattacked shortly afterward as Heivel Cordoves appeared to have a breakaway. Sterling Flunder rushed back to poke the ball to safety.

The visitors had another chance on 21 minutes after Brown spilled Navion Boyd’s long distance drive. Garbanzo tucked away the rebound from an offside position.

Pittsburgh’s defense endured a series of corners to conclude the first half. Charleston almost capitalized from one of them when substitute Dane Kelly headed against Brown’s left post.

Kerr found the breakthrough seven minutes into the second half. Matt Dallman whipped an inswinging free kick toward the penalty spot from about 35 years out on the left side. Kerr reached the ball first to guide his header beyond Cuban goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper.

Brown denied the Battery’s attempts to find the leveler for most of the second half. He looked set to record his sixth shutout of a fine rookie season. The University of Virginia graduate emphatically punched away Kelly’s stinging shot on 65 minutes before tipping a Justin Portillo free kick away from his top corner five minutes later.

All signs then seemed to be heading toward a vital three points for the Hounds until Chang’s intervention altered the playoff picture once again.

Pittsburgh remains seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 10-9-6 record (36 points). Charleston edges to 40 points having played one additional game (10-6-10).

The Hounds travel to the Wilmington Hammerheads next Saturday before retuning to Highmark Stadium on Sept. 16 for a midweek clash against the league-leading Rochester Rhinos. Pittsburgh’s regular season ends Sept. 19 in Harrisburg with the Keystone Derby Cup at stake against the City Islanders.

Pittsburgh’s Mayor Bill Peduto will be in attendance Sept. 16 when the Hounds close out the regular season home slate against the Rochester Rhinos. Peduto will announce a new partnership between Citiparks Pittsburgh BIG League Sports, the Keep on Playing Foundation and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds that will see the club’s players and coaches running soccer clinics. Keep on Playing will be providing soccer equipment for young kids in the city.

Local singer and songwriter Hannah Jenkins will be playing an acoustic set in the Highmark Stadium sports bar before and after the game and during the halftime interval.

The first 2,500 fans to arrive will also receive a free insulated cooler.
