Pitt #23 in country

published in category: College Sports on Monday, October 26th, 2015 – 11:23 am

Pitt gets another big road conference win, they are now 6-1 on the season, 4-0 in the ACC. #23 in the country and now a huge Thursday night game this week at home.

1026pitt15

The University of Pittsburgh and National Football Foundation will honor 2015 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Ruben Brown at halftime of the Panthers’ Thursday night game with North Carolina, Pitt athletic director Scott Barnes announced.

“We are thrilled to bring Ruben back to Pittsburgh and celebrate his well-deserved induction into the College Football Hall of Fame,” Barnes said. “Ruben is an all-timer both as a player and as a person. It will be a truly special moment when he hears the cheers of Pitt fans once again this Thursday night.”

A star offensive tackle for the Panthers from 1991-94, Brown is the 24th Pitt player or coach to earn induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. He will receive his formal induction on December 8 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

“This honor goes well beyond me,” Brown said when his election was announced in January. “Everyone at Pitt shares this recognition. I’m so indebted to the many people who mentored, coached and guided me as a person and player over the years. I’m thrilled to accept this honor on everyone’s behalf and could not be more humbled and appreciative.”

Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi has named Brown an honorary team captain for the North Carolina game. “Ruben’s pride in the University of Pittsburgh is obvious,” Narduzzi said. “He is a true ‘Pitt Man’ and I know everyone is extremely proud of him.”

A Parade All-American out of E.C. Glass High in Virginia, Brown arrived at Pitt in 1990 as a highly touted defensive lineman. Forced to redshirt as a freshman due to injury, he was greeted at his second college training camp in 1991 with news from the coaching staff that he would be switched to offense.

Unlike the defensive line, which featured standouts Sean Gilbert and Keith Hamilton, Pitt’s offensive front had depth issues and needed immediate help.

That’s exactly what Brown provided. He started the next four years at offensive tackle, earned All-Big East three times and, as a senior, was a first team All-American.

In the 1995 NFL Draft, Brown was taken in the first round by the Buffalo Bills. He was the 14th overall selection and would reward the Bills’ investment by going to eight consecutive Pro Bowls as an offensive guard from 1996-2003. Brown would be named to Buffalo’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2009.

Brown concluded his career by spending four seasons in Chicago (2004-07). In 2006, he was a vital contributor to the Bears’ first Super Bowl berth in nearly two decades. That same season he was named to his ninth Pro Bowl, matching Dan Marino for the most Pro Bowl appearances by a Pitt player since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

His Pro Bowl credentials also make him a highly viable candidate for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday.

Now retired, Brown remains highly active in numerous community endeavors. His Ruben Brown Foundation is aimed at helping children through educational, developmental and mentoring programs. He annually organizes holiday shopping trips for underprivileged families and hosts a “Game Day Experience with Ruben Brown” in which area youth can watch a Bills game with him from a luxury suite.

Brown has received various recognitions for his community work, including the Pro Football Weekly Arthur S. Arkush Humanitarian of the Year Award, Ralph C. Wilson Distinguished Service Award, the Buffalo Bills’ NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Salvation Army William Booth Community Service Award.

He is also very visible in media circles, hosting weekly sports radio and television shows in the Buffalo area. His move behind the microphone was a natural. One of the most quotable and cooperative players during his career, Brown was named to NFL.com’s “All-Interview Team.”

In addition to Brown, the Panthers’ other College Hall of Famers, with the years they participated at Pitt in parentheses, are: Len Casanova (1950, coach), Jim Covert (1978-82), Averell Daniell (1934-36), Tom Davies (1918-21), Mike Ditka (1958-60), Joseph Donchess (1927-29), Tony Dorsett (1973-76), Bill Fralic (1981-84), Hugh Green (1977-80), Marshall Goldberg (1936-38), John Majors (1954-56, as a player at Tennessee), Dan Marino (1979-82), Mark May (1977-80), Herb McCracken (1918-20), George McLaren (1915-18), Robert Peck (1913-16), Joe Schmidt (1950-52), Joe Skladany (1931-33), Herb Stein (1918-21), Dr. John B. Sutherland (1914-17 [player], 1924-38 [coach]), Joseph Thompson (1904-06 [player], 1908-12 [coach]), Hube Wagner (1910-13), and Glenn “Pop” Warner (1915-23, coach).

Pitt enters this week’s showdown with North Carolina boasting a 6-1 overall record and 4-0 ACC mark. The Tar Heels are 6-1 and 3-0. The game will kick off at 7 p.m., and be nationally televised by ESPN.

Turnovers doom Steelers at Arrowhead by Brandon Walker

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, October 26th, 2015 – 9:29 am

The story of this game was this: One team managed to finally hold on to a 4th quarter lead while the other couldn’t muster another road comeback. The Kansas City Chiefs snapped a five game losing streak with a 23-13 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs (2-5) won on the Strength of three Steelers (4-3) turnovers and a 110 yards rushing by 2nd year running back Charcandrick West. Tamba Hali forced a fumble on a sack of Landry Jones on the Steelers last possession recovered by the Chiefs Jaye Howard just before the two-minute warning sealed the victory for Kansas City. Kansas City preceded that fumble with an 8 play, 84 yard drive that was capped off by a Alex Smith six yard touchdown pass to Chris Conley.

Alex Smith played his usual solid, efficient game going 21 for 32 for 251 yards with the aforementioned touchdown that iced the game for the Chiefs. West also scored a touchdown and Cairo Santos converted three field goals for the Chiefs. Jones went 16 for 29 for 209 with one touchdown and two interceptions. Antonio Brown caught 6 balls for 124 yards and Le’Veon Bell rushed for 121 yards on 17 carries for the Steelers. Chris Boswell remains perfect on field goals for the Steelers by connecting on both field goal attempts.

Kansas City deserved to winning the game because they won the turnover battle 3 to 0, outgained the Steelers 377-339, and had a better conversion rate on third down (KC 9-16, PIT 2-10). I do not solely blame Jones for the Steelers loss even though he had the turnovers. I personally thought that Kansas City was playing for their season and came out with a little bit more urgency. Let’s not forget the Chiefs were without Jamaal Charles who is on IR with an ACL tear and Jeremy Maclin was inactive due to lingering effects of a concussion, so I thought both teams were on equal footing when it comes to injuries.

The turning point of the game was on the second Steeler drive of the 2nd half and they had the ball on the Chiefs 49 and Landry Jones threw an pass that was intended for Antonio Brown and it got ricochets of Brown and Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson into the arms of Eric Berry for his first interception since he returned from Hodgkin Lymphoma. The Chiefs preceded to go on a 9 play, 53 yard drive capped off by a one yard rushing touchdown by West to make the score 16-3 and the Steelers were playing catch up for the rest of the game.

1026st16

Looking forward to next week, it is widely expected for Ben Roethlisberger to return from his knee injury and I look like this: This is going to be the most important game this season for the Steelers because if they lose this game any chance of them winning the AFC North will be obsolete and they will be bunched in a scrum for a wild card spot in the AFC. The question for Big Ben and the Steelers offense is this: Are the Cincinnati Bengals the right team for the Steelers to try to get back in rhythm against? The Steelers are going to need Ben to hit the ground running and they have problems at left tackle. Their new left tackle Alejandro Villanueva gave up two sacks to Hali and Ben’s mobility and his ability to shrug off defenders will be effected. One thing is for certain is this: This game Sunday will either decide the AFC North or make the AFC North a real race to the finish!
