Pitt loses 3 of last 5

published in category: College Sports on Monday, November 30th, 2015 – 9:35 am

Pitt loses to Miami, loses 3 of last 5 games but still a step forward this season. Theme in losses to Miami, North Carolina and Notre Dame-pass rush lacking-pass defense exposed. But do not suffer from last game syndrome, this is a season to build on.

Also- Robert Morris Colonials complete sweep over weekend-from RMU staff-

A late goal by David Friedmann lifts Robert Morris University men’s hockey to its’ first sweep of the season with a 5-4 victory over Sacred Heart. The senior forward’s second goal of the season came with less than five minutes remaining on a perfect centering pass by Spencer Dorowicz.

Special teams scoring once again a factor right away. Sacred Heart broke free on the penalty kill in the first, leading to an Evan Jasper shorthanded goal to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

On that same Colonials power play, RMU answered. Brandon Denham batted home his Atlantic Hockey-leading third power play goal of the season. Daniel Leavens and Brady Ferguson received assists on the set up, leading to Denham’s ninth goal of the year, tying the game 1-1.

Score stays that way into the second period, where Robert Morris starts the frame on another power play. The Colonials power play continues to show why it leads the nation, converting yet another attempt, this time from Ferguson, with assists to David Friedmann and Chase Golightly, just :42 into the period. Twenty seconds later, Greg Gibson scores a rarity in this game, an even strength goal from Matt Cope and Zac Lynch, to put the Colonials out from 3-1.

Robert Morris returned to the penalty kill just after Gibson’s goal, and once again Lynch extended his program-record mark in shorthanded goals with his ninth score of the season. Matt Cope rushed the puck up the ice, passing to Lynch who buried the shot for his tenth career shorthanded goal, ranked number one among active NCAA players. The Pittsburgh native has a shorthanded tally in four consecutive games, a likely NCAA record for shorthanded goals in consecutive games. Lynch’s grandfather was at the rink celebrating his 80th birthday, making the goal that much more special.

“Good to see him here on his 80th birthday,” said Lynch, “he’s doing well. It was good to have him up there and score him a goal.”

The Colonials scored three goals in 2:49 to start the second period, building a 4-1 lead. Sacred Heart didn’t back down, rallying from a three-goal deficit early in the second period to tie the game 4-4 at the 3:03 mark of the third. RMU’s penalty kill fought off four more minutes of 5-on-4 time in the third.

“We’ve got to make sure we do a better job to extend that lead,” said Head Coach Derek Schooley. “We allowed them back in the game. It went from a 4-1 lead to a 4-4 game before you know it.”

With less than five minutes to play, Dorowicz won a puck battle along the boards and centered the pass right on the stick of Friedmann, who scored his second of the weekend to put RMU ahead 5-4.

Robert Morris swept Sacred Heart with the 6-3 win Saturday and 5-4 Sunday, the team’s first sweep of the season.

“Anytime you get four points in a weekend, you’ve got to be happy with that,” said Schooley. “At the end of the day, the most important thing is four points and we got four points.”

“I told the guys afterwards that was the best thing about today was four points,” continued Schooley. “It’s hard to win. There’s so much emotion, you can’t let teams back in games. But we got the four points. I would take winning ugly over losing pretty.”

A quick turnaround from the Sunday game for the Colonials (7-2-3, 6-1-3 AHC), with a road trip to Rochester Institute of Technology next Friday and Saturday.

Wilson, Baldwin lay the boom on the Steelers by Brandon Walker

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, November 30th, 2015 – 9:28 am

Russell Wilson had a career day on his 27th birthday to give the Seattle Seahawks a crucial victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday by the score of 39-30. With that victory the Seahawks (6-5) lay claim to the final wild Card spot in the NFC. Wilson completed 21 out of 30 passes for 345 yards and five touchdowns, three to Doug Baldwin including an 80 yard touchdown to seal the game with 2:01 left to play. This drive was preceded by a field goal by Chris Boswell to cut the lead to 32-30. The decision was questionable in my opinion at the time, but when Ben Roethlisberger had to leave the game with concussion like symptoms it seems understandable. Roethlisberger threw for 456 yards, which is the most passing yards ever thrown against the Seahawks, but he also threw two interceptions.
Thomas Rawls rushed for 81 yards on 21 carries for Seattle. Doug Baldwin had six catches for 145 yards with the three touchdowns, and Jermaine Kearse caught four passes for 47 yards and two touchdowns. For the Steelers (6-5) Markus Wheaton caught nine passes for 201 yards and a touchdown and DeAngelo Williams had 117 total yards, 88 of those on seven receptions.

The Steelers outgained the Seahawks 538-436, won time of possession 32:00-28:00, and had more first downs (26-21). What made the difference in this game was the Seahawks 4 takeaways and did not give the ball up once. What also cost the Steelers is some questionable decisions by Coach Mike Tomlin. The decision to go for the sure field goal instead of going for the go ahead touchdown was baffling because the defense had been struggling all day and I would not have trusted that the defense was going to get a stop and got them the ball back with a chance to win. Another decision that was made that was head-scratching was the attempted fake field goal in which Landry Jones threw a pass intended for Alejandro Villanueva which was intercepted by Jeremy Lane. The Seahawks went on to score a touchdown and turned the momentum and fired on the “Twelves”.

1130trick

Moving forward the Steelers still have a tough stretch in front of them with the surging Indianapolis Colts led by veteran Matthew Hasselbeck coming to Heinz Field on Sunday Night. Roethlisberger’s status for Sunday night’s game is uncertain after leaving the game after a late hit by the Seahawks Michael Bennett on the Steeler’s second to last drive. Landry Jones subbed in and threw an interception to Kam Chancellor to ice the game on the Steelers last possession. It is obvious that the Steelers are not going anywhere without Ben playing quarterback and they are now eighth in the AFC playoff picture. The Chiefs and Texans occupy the two wild card spots as if right now and the Jets are also ahead of them due to various tiebreakers. The Steelers have shown resiliency all year long with injuries, but the question is this: How long will they be able to fight against the war of attrition?

College Football Playoff Rankings Speak Louder Than Wins, by Josh Taylor

published in category: College Sports on Wednesday, November 25th, 2015 – 2:17 am

1001pitt15

This week’s College Football Playoff rankings came with a shake-up at the bottom half of the bracket, and with it a new message has been sent from Chairman Jeff Long and his committee: it’s no longer just about whether or not you win. It’s how you win and how well you play.

And this weekend it should be heard loud and clear, just in time for the conference contenders to be finalized and the wanna-bes sent packing for bowl destinations other than Miami and Dallas.

That said, here’s my decription of this week’s rankings:

– THEY’RE IN (for now): (1) Clemson, (2) Alabama, (3) Oklahoma, (4) Iowa – Oklahoma clearly got the committee’s attention when they beat Baylor by 10 in Waco, and they clearly believed a one-point win at home over TCU was valuable enough to vault the Sooners into the top four. But we’ll see if they stay there after their trip to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State and depending highly upon what Notre Dame does against Stanford.

Ohio State’s 17-14 loss to Michigan State opened the gate for the Spartans to take the Big Ten East division, and for Iowa to enter the top four. But now the Hawkeyes will have to beat Sparty in the Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis to stay in the bracket, assuming they also win on the road this weekend against Nebraska, the one team that has beaten Sparty.

– KNOCKING ON THE DOOR: (5) Michigan State, (12) Florida, (14) North Carolina – Michigan State has the easiest path of this group: beat Penn State at home and then beat Iowa to win their conference title and likely snag a top four spot. That heart-breaking loss to Nebraska might not look so bad if they beat Iowa in Lincoln this weekend.

North Carolina has to beat NC State on the road and then Clemson in the ACC title game in Charlotte to be considered, but then a couple of conflicting details come into play. Beating Clemson should be enough to vault the Tar Heels past Notre Dame, but is a season-opening loss to South Carolina — a team who lost to The Citadel at home last week — forgivable?

Florida was on the right path until Florida Atlantic took them to overtime in Gainesville. The Gators eventually won, 20-14, but see the above-mentioned message from the committee to understand why they fell four spots in the rankings despite that victory. Now they have to beat Florida State this weekend and beat Alabama for the SEC title in Atlanta next weekend to be taken seriously.

– HELP WANTED: (6) Notre Dame, (8) Ohio State, (9) Stanford, (10) Michigan, (11) Oklahoma State – How does a team go from holding a playoff spot to the first two out to needing help to get back in? Simple. Be Notre Dame and beat Boston College by only three points in a game that was very underwhelming and in doubt until the fourth quarter. The only reason Florida is a step ahead of the Fighting Irish is because Florida gets an extra game next weekend.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame has one last chance to get back in the committee’s good graces: to go to Palo Alto and beat Stanford Saturday. But if the Cardinal hold serve at home and take care of the winner of Southern Cal and UCLA in the PAC-12 Championship Game, then maybe we’ll have a real controversy on our hands with a two-loss Power Five champion at the table.

The winner of Ohio State and Michigan in Ann Arbor Saturday has to hope Penn State knocks off Michigan State in East Lansing in order to clinch the East division and play in the Big Ten Championship Game. It’s not easy, but Ohio State should find themselves back in the thick of things if it works in their favor. But Michigan will also need Stanford to beat Notre Dame, Baylor to lose at TCU and Oklahoma State to beat Oklahoma in “Bedlam.” And even then, they still may not fit in the puzzle with two losses.

Oklahoma State has to beat Oklahoma in Stillwater Saturday and hope Baylor loses either this week against TCU in Fort Worth or at home against Texas next week, plus they’ll need Stanford, Michigan and Penn State to knock out Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan State, respectively. Oh, and they’ll need Iowa to lose either this week against Nebraska or next week in the Big Ten Championship. But that’s all. #NBD #sarcasm

– OUTSIDE LOOKING IN: (7) Baylor, (15) Navy – Baylor needs the exact same help Oklahoma State needs, plus they have to win two games. The only thing worse than Oklahoma State’s road would be a 9-1 record despite a strength of schedule ranked 91st in a Group of Five conference and a lone significant win against Memphis… “Oh, hi, Navy! I didn’t see you there.”

– SLEEPER AGENT: (18) Ole Miss – Yes, they lost to Arkansas at home in overtime after that INSANE 4th down lateral. Yes, they lost to Memphis. But they’re also the only team that beat Alabama, giving them the tie-breaker in the SEC West should the Crimson Tide be upset at Auburn in the Iron Bowl. But don’t get it twisted. Even if Alabama loses Saturday, Ole Miss wins the Egg Bowl this week against Mississippi State and beats Florida for the SEC Championship next week, three losses will certainly keep the Rebels out of the playoff. But that doesn’t mean they can’t have a little fun spoiling it for someone else along the way.

Four of the Power Five are represented in the bracket right now, but that could all change in a few days. I wrongfully predicted the playoff picture would be clearer this week, but the truth is it could be even worse by the end of it.

Keep those notepads and number ciphers handy till next time, mystery fans.
