Riverhounds Roster shaping up by Michael Grau

published in category: Riverhounds on Thursday, January 7th, 2016 – 9:37 am

Roster turnover is a reality of life in USL, and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds are not immune. As the calendar turned to 2016, most Hounds supporters would tell you that the club needed to improve three areas in particular before the upcoming campaign: goalkeeper, central defense, and striker. Over the last few days, the club has announced the signings of four new players as they begin to address those areas of need: Corey Hertzog, Zak Boggs, Mauricio Vargas, and Alex Harlley. These new signings, coupled with several returning players still under contract, and we start to get a picture of what kind of team head coach Mark Steffens plans to field in his second season on the job.
Both of the Riverhounds top two goalkeepers left the club following the team’s playoff loss to New York Red Bulls II. Ryan Thompson was the club’s first-choice keeper coming into the year, but national team duties and injuries prevented Thompson from regular minutes, and he never got into any sort of rhythm. Calle Brown, an NCAA champion at the University of Virginia, stepped in and deputized well during the team’s stretch run. So well, in fact, that he was offered a contract with Houston Dynamo of MLS. The departures of Thompson and Brown left a glaring hole between the sticks. In steps Mauricio Vargas. Vargas was born in New Jersey and moved to Costa Rica as a young child. He drew the attention of the Costa Rican football federation as a teenager, and he represented Los Ticos in both the 2007 Under-17 and the 2011 Under-20 FIFA World Cups. Cracking the Costa Rican first team might be difficult, as his position is currently occupied by Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, but Vargas brings experience in elite competitions to a position where the Hounds cupboard is relatively bare.

Another area of need for the Riverhounds was center forward. Despite being one of the highest scoring teams in USL, the Hounds’ struggled for goals from the number 9 spot all year long. Brazilian striker Vini Dantas was released from the team after one year. Dantas showed flashes of potential, but struggled for fitness and goal-scoring touch. Robert Morris product Miro Cabrilo provided some great hold-up play, and while turning your back to goal and setting up your midfielders is a wonderful ability for a center forward to have, the striker’s job is to score goals, and 3 tallies in 760 minutes of play (as Cabrilo registered) just isn’t enough. In one day, Mark Steffens looked to bolster his offense by bringing in forwards Corey Hertzog and Zak Boggs. In his junior year at Penn State, Hertzog scored 20 goals to lead the NCAA. Hertzog decided to forego his senior year in Happy Valley, and was drafted 13th overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by New York Red Bulls. Since then, he has spent time in New York and with Vancouver in MLS, as well as loan spells with Wilmington and Orlando City in USL. Hertzog played with Tamps Bay Rowdies in NASL last season before agreeing terms with the Riverhounds. Hertzog and fellow signee Boggs played together in Tampa last season.
Zak Boggs’s road to Pittsburgh has been a little less conventional. A West Virginia native, he was a selection of the New England Revolution in the 2010 SuperDraft, made 29 appearances for the Revs, then left professional soccer to study cancer cell and molecular biology at the University of Leicester on a Fulbright Scholarship. Boggs was also a nominee for a Rhodes Scholarship when he was at the University of South Florida. I hope Zak make the Riverhounds better. I KNOW he makes them smarter. When he resumed his professional career after his time studying abroad, Boggs played for Hounds coach Mark Steffens with the Charlotte Eagles. You’d have to assume that familiarity was a big selling point for Boggs, and I’m sure his appreciation for Steffens’s style and philosophy aided in bringing in Hertzog, as well.

Midfielder Alex Harlley rounds out the quartet of new signings. The 23-year old midfielder from Togo doesn’t necessarily fill a position of need like the other three, but I’m excited to see what he brings to the team. My scouting of Harlley consists of watching YouTube highlight videos (admittedly, not the most effective way to analyze a player’s game), but he appears to be a big, physical presence who prefers the right wing. I’m interested to see where Steffens plans on using him. He could be a wild card. So far, my two favorite facts about Alex Harlley are: 1) he was red-carded during his professional debut while his team was down 4-0; and 2) his uncle is former Monaco, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Tottenham forward Emmanuel Adebayor.
The offseason is still young, and the Riverhounds have hinted at other signings that will be announced in the coming weeks. Central defense still needs addressed. The Hounds were sorely lacking a big, physical presence in the heart of the defensive line. Other than that, the squad is rounding into shape. If the trio of Rob Vincent, Kevin Kerr, and Lebo Moloto (all of whom are under contract for 2016) remain with the team, the midfield will be strong once again. Stephen Okai, Sterling Flunder, Drew Russell, and Nick Kolarac are all under contract for another year, as well. Plus, the affiliation deal with Columbus Crew SC will provide depth and young talent for the roster. Mark Steffens and his staff achieved their goal of reaching the USL playoffs in 2015. In year two under Steffens, their sights are set on grander achievements. The signings of the past few days show that the club knows exactly where they need to improve if they want to get there.

Jag Off of Year Voting by Ken Laird

published in category: College Sports, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, January 6th, 2016 – 2:10 pm

It’s that time of year again. As in, the New Year. Which for us at TribLIVE Radio means, reflecting on who the biggest Jagoff was in sports over the previous twelve months.

As our listeners mostly bring a local bias, the vote getters throughout the years tend to have a distinct Pittsburgh slant in the accusations. However, it’s not a requirement: sometimes national Jafoggery can overcome.

The 2014 Jagoff of the Year, for example, was NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, largely for his handling of the Ray Rice elevator-violence incident. ‘Ginger Roger’ beat out local candidate LeGarette Blount, who had fought with Steelers teammates in the preseason, led rookie LeVeon Bell on a high-drive on McKnight road, then walked out on his teammates after a win and earned his release to flee back to New England.

In 2013, our ‘winner’ was international in scope as Dennis Rodman won Yearly honors after singing happy birthday to Kim Jong Un in North Korea. Not to mention, Rodman appeared on CNN and insinuated that an American who was being held captive in Korea after merely giving tours deserved what he had gotten.

In 2012, though, the voting was distinctly local in ire as the Pirates’ management trio of Bob Nutting, Frank Coonely, and Neal Huntington were together named TribLIVE Radio’s biggest losers after ‘Epic Collapse II.’ The Buccos that year became the first team in MLB history to be 16 games over .500 with a season 108 games old and yet finish with a losing record (for the 20th consecutive year).

And in 2011, departed Pitt coach Todd, a.k.a. ‘Fraud’ Graham was a slam-dunk winner after fleeing the program just one year into his reign of terror.

So who will it be in 2015?

As I go to press time here, in the midst of our two-day vote on the air at TribLIVE radio, here appear to be the leading candidates:

1 – Roger Goodell (again). This year, it was a whole new bundle of blunders: the DeflateGate sting and ensuing Wells Report, the Greg Hardy incident, the Adrian Peterson scandal, the ongoing league concussion battles, sub-par league officiating, and so much more. Not since the days of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell have we had a repeat JOTY winner. Is this the year? Is Goodell the worst commissioner in sports history?

2 – NHL management. The league, run by Gary Bettman but of course directed by many stubborn and old-school owners, has allowed the great sport to regress back to a second Dead Puck era. As our emailers often say, “best sport, worst league.” How many 2-1 games can a viewer take?

3 – Johnny Manziel. On one hand, the guy appears to have a serious drinking problem which deserves some sympathy. On the other hand, the behavior is the behavior: Jagoff-ed from top to bottom. In just the latest event to ring in the new year, Manziel was in Las Vegas during Week 17 while on concussion protocol, reportedly wearing a blonde wig and going by the handle ‘Billy’ to avoid discovery while partying into the wee-hours in nightclubs, skipping his required check-in with team medics. Earlier in the season, he responded to being named the team’s starting QB by hearing back out to Vegas to party. Just another year in Cleveland: help wanted signs for quarterbacks, head coaches, and general managers.

4 – ‘The Puck Schmuck,’ a weekly winner during 2015. On October 29, a middle-aged fan at the Penguins – Sabres game behind the glass intercepted a puck that was tossed from Buffalo coach Dan Bylsma and intended for a young kid. The puck-stealing fan later left with the biscuit despite reportedly being verbally assailed by nearby fans to give the young lad the souvenir. Not only would he not cooperate, he reportedly taunted the kid as well. Paul Steigerwald said it best on the telecast coverage, “He’s probably out in the parking lot playing with his puck.”

5 – Joe Maddon. The new Cubs manager irritates opposing fanbases just with his wannabe Hipster vibe alone. But after Chris Coughlan took out Pirates second baseman Jung Ho Kang with a dirty take-out slide at second base, ending Kang’s season with serious knee damage, Maddon said after the game that he’d heard Kang only had “plantar fasciitis.” Pay no attention, Joe, to the gruesome knee buckling and wailing from Kang on the field a few hours earlier. It probably was just a chronic foot ailment.

RMU In NEC Play

published in category: College Sports on Wednesday, January 6th, 2016 – 10:43 am

RMU Basketball Coach Andy Toole joins Ken Laird to talk about NEC Play.

From RMU PR- The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team wrapped up a two-game homestand at the Charles L. Sewall Center to open Northeast Conference play with a 72-69 setback to Wagner Monday night.

The Colonials, who slipped to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in the NEC, had three opportunities to either grab the lead or tie it in the final 35 seconds but came up short each time.

Freshman guard Matty McConnell connected from beyond the arc with 1:16 to play that helped RMU trim its deficit to 70-69. On Wagner’s next possession, Michael Carey missed a layup, and sophomore forward Elijah Minnie grabbed the rebound for Robert Morris.

Senior guard Rodney Pryor went up for a jumper with 35 seconds to go, but the shot fell short, with Romone Saunders coming down with the rebound. Corey Henson was then fouled and sent to the line, but he missed the front end of a one-on-one opportunity with 28 seconds left.

Junior forward Billy Giles grabbed the rebound for the Colonials, and with under 10 seconds to play, Minnie rose up for a jumper just inside the three-point line but the shot was off the mark. Carey grabbed the rebound for the Seahawks and was immediately fouled. He sank both of his attempts at the chalk to give Wagner a 72-69 edge with 6.3 seconds remaining.

Out of a Wagner timeout, junior guard Kavon Stewart was fouled as soon as he stepped over midcourt with 3.3 seconds left. He missed both of his free throws, but on the second Carey came down with the board but stepped out of bounds, giving Robert Morris the ball with 2.2 seconds to play.

The Colonials called timeout, and out of the break Pryor’s three-pointer from the top of the key was strong, helping the Seahawks seal the victory.

Wagner didn’t convert a field goal in the final four minutes and 20 seconds of the contest but was bolstered by an 8-for-9 performance at the stripe in the final four minutes. The Seahawks also held a 44-24 edge on the glass, including a 23-10 cushion in offensive rebounds.

“I thought for the most part tonight we played with the appropriate effort,” head coach Andrew Toole said. “We talk all the time about playing good defense, not turning the ball over and rebounding. Those are the formulas for success. We defended well, and I thought we did a better job in the second half of not turning it over. They hurt us on the boards. You can’t do two of three or one of three and expect to win the game. There’s a small margin of error. We still don’t value some of the details that I think will get us over the hump.”

Robert Morris trailed, 35-31, heading into the second half, and Wagner quickly grabbed its largest lead of the contest, 43-33, with 14:20 remaining after a layup from Carey. The Seahawks also had a double-digit cushion, 50-40, with 11:10 to go after Mike Aaman scored a layup in the paint.

The Colonials slowly chipped away, using a 7-0 spurt that featured a pair of jumpers from Pryor and a three-pointer by Minnie to close to within 55-51 at the 7:38 mark of the second half.

Wagner kept RMU at bay, owning a trio of six-point leads in the final five minutes, including 68-62 with 2:28 to go after a pair of free throws from Dwaun Anderson. The Seahawks then sealed the win at the free-throw line.

Stewart garnered game-high honors in scoring with a career-high 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 1-for-1 from deep, and an 8-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. He also added seven assists and five steals.

Giles added a career-high 17 points and six rebounds, Minnie contributed 13 points, seven boards and two blocks off the bench and Pryor finished with 10 points and six caroms.

Wagner’s top two leading scorers were reserves, as Saunders finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Aaman chipped in 14 points, six boards and two assists. Carey finished with 12 points and eight caroms and Corey Henson contributed 11 points.

Robert Morris takes to the road for six of its next eight games, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. tilt Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, against LIU Brooklyn at the Steinberg Center.
