Matt Cullen’s third period tally lifts the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers to take a two games to one lead in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Tuesday night.
Cullen broke away in the Rangers zone and Rangers defensemen Kieth Randle and Dan Boyle misread the play and ran into each other to give Cullen the clear path to beat Hendrik Lundqvist and score the go
After a scoreless first period the Rangers got on the board first on a shorthanded goal scored by Rick Nash on a 23 foot snap shot assisted by Kevin Klein and Marc Staal. The preceding penalty was a penalty on Chris Kreider for boarding Patric Hornqvist. This was the first Rangers playoff goal scored at home since Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals last season against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Rangers hent 166 playoff minutes at home without scoring.
The Penguins scored the equalizer with 42 seconds remaining in the second period on a power play goal Scored by Sidney Crosby on a seven foot tip in shot assisted by Phil Kessel and Evgeni Malkin. The preceding penalty was a hooking penalty to Staal on Carl Hagelin.
In the third period, the Penguins took the lead for good on the aforementioned Cullen goal 14 foot wrist shot assisted by Tom Kuhnhackl and Ian Cole.
The Penguins iced the game on an empty net goal by Kris Letang on 99 foot wrist shot.
Matt Murray stopped 16 shots for the Penguins, while Lundqvist stopped 28 shots for New York.
The game three stars were Cullen, Nash and Murray.
Game 4 will take place from the Garden on Thursday night with an opportunity for the Penguins to take complete control of the series.
