Healthy Returning Bucs Answering a Dire Need, by Josh Taylor

published in category: Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 – 12:52 am

Taillon 7-20-16

When the Pirates’ lineup card was posted in the PNC Park clubhouse Tuesday afternoon, it could’ve been seen as a clean bill of health, much less a list of that night’s starters. It was also a message to both the team and anybody following it: the Pirates are back at full strength, or at least the closest they’ve been in six weeks.

Pitcher Ryan Vogelsong (facial fractures) and catcher Chris Stewart (left knee) are still working their way back to health, but for the first time since early June the Bucs have their starting eight and pitching rotation in tact, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as they began, arguably, their most crucial homestand of the season with a 3-2 win over Milwaukee.

Gregory Polanco, who had been out more than a week with a nagging hamstring injury, started in right field, batted second in the order and got back to his old habits right away, working a full-count walk after falling behind in the count 1-2 against Brewers’ starting pitcher Junior Guerra.

It was Polanco’s only time reaching base, but he scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-loaded single to shallow right field by David Freese that was almost a force-out at home plate. Polanco’s long legs proved capable of beating Ramon Flores’ throw to catcher Jonathan Lucroy. He later hustled out a groundout to shortstop in full gallop with no sign of hesitation.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli, nearly six weeks removed from fracturing the hamate bone in his left hand while swinging a bat, hit sixth in the order and drove in the Pirates’ second run with a fly ball to right field that scored Andrew McCutchen for a sacrifice fly. He also drew a walk in the fourth inning, firmly re-asserting himself as the team’s top man in on-base percentage among the regulars.

Then there was the kid on mound, rookie right-hander Jameson Taillon, who was activated Tuesday afternoon from the 15-day disabled list (shoulder fatigue). His arm clearly looked fine in the early going, but it immediately became less of a concern when a line drive off the bat of Hernan Perez struck Taillon in the back of the head and ricocheted into left field.

It was a scary enough sight to make second baseman Josh Harrison drop instantly to his knees and McCutchen to raise his hands to his head, watching helplessly in center field while manager Clint Hurdle and the team’s medical staff rushed to Taillon’s aid. But Taillon assured them all he was fine, and then went out and proved it by throwing 44 of 65 pitches for strikes while allowing only one run in six innings on five hits with three strikeouts.

Perhaps it was the sign the team needed, given Taillon’s predicament and the depletion the roster had endured for more than a month. It was easy to decipher Taillon telling trainer Todd Tomczyk: “I’m alright.”

For the Pirates, it should be just as simple as an affirmation: WE’RE alright.

It took a triple by Harrison in the bottom of the ninth and an error by Milwaukee second baseman Scooter Gennett that allowed Harrison to score the winning run after closer Mark Melancon recorded his second consecutive blown save in the top half of the inning. But the bigger victory comes in having three players who are vital to this team’s playoff hopes returning and all contributing to a win.

Consider the return of Gerrit Cole four days before from a triceps strain in his throwing arm, and now the Pirates have two of their top three starting pitchers, their best catcher and one of their best hitters all back in the fold for what could be their most important three weeks of the season, while other teams in the National League playoff race also try to regain full health.

If a postseason run is going to happen for this team, it’s going to have to be earned in July and August, but at least now they can say they’re ready and able to put their best foot forward.

Riverhounds drop another close one

published in category: Riverhounds on Monday, July 18th, 2016 – 12:39 pm

New Riverhounds Assistant Coach Dan Visser joins the show plus Soccer Writer Matt Grubba and Soccer Host Mike Grau on soccer and basketball.

soccer-502-2

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have mutually agreed to part ways with midfielder James Bissue and defender Karsten Smith.

Both new additions to this season’s club, Bissue joined the Hounds from the Montreal Impact, making six appearances, while Smith, previously competing for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, played in five matches this year.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-11-4) fell for a third-straight match, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Harrisburg City Islanders (5-13-2) in round two of the Keystone Derby Cup Series presented by the Pennsylvania Lottery and K&L Gates.

Harrisburg’s two goals in the first half proved to be too much for the Hounds to overcome with Dante Leverock and Jose Barril notching tallies in the 29th and 33rd minute, respectively. Kevin Kerr buried the lone goal for the Hounds in the 60th minute, snapping a three-match goalless streak in the process.
Action opened up at a back-and-forth pace. Jack Thompson, slotted at left back, almost gave the Hounds an early lead with a rocket of a shot from over 25 yards out ringing off the crossbar in the 17th minute. The missed opportunity proved painful, as the City Islanders, earning a corner in 28th minute, got the first goal of the match thanks to Leverock heading a shot flush past goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas far post.

Five minutes later, Harrisburg’s lead grew to two off a crazy sequence starting with Vargas making a diving save and pushing the ball out in front of him. Finding his way to the loose ball, Barril was able to evade a sliding challenge by Thompson and fire between the legs and eventually off of defender Mike Green and into the goal.

The Hounds responded with a strong second half, eventually breaking through with a deft finish by Kerr in the 60th minute. The build up opened with Lebo Moloto finding second half sub Nick Thompson in front of the box. Thompson then headed a soft touch to Hertzog, who pushed a header to Kerr in space, giving the captain a chance in all alone on goalkeeper Keasel Broome.
In the 78th minute, Harrisburg had an opportunity for the dagger off a penalty kick attempted by Bobby Warshaw. Hoping to fool Vargas with a few stutter steps, Warshaw pushed a shot low to Vargas’ left, seeing his shot saved by a stellar diving stop by the Hounds keeper. The Hounds would end the match pushing for an equalizer, including Drew Russell ringing a shot off the crossbar from distance, but the effort would not be enough.

Pitt’s Jordan Whitehead earned his fourth watch-list selection of the 2016 preseason on Friday morning when the dynamic sophomore safety was named a candidate for the Paul Hornung Award, which is annually presented to college football’s most versatile player by the Louisville Sports Commission.

Whitehead’s explosiveness in various different roles could make him the ideal candidate for this season’s Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, whose recent winners include first round NFL Draft picks Tavon Austin of West Virginia (2012), Odell Beckham Jr. of LSU (2013) and Shaq Thompson of Washington (2014), as well as 2015 honoree Christian McCaffrey of Stanford.

Featuring primarily as a safety for the Panthers in his true freshman season, Whitehead was named ACC Rookie of the Year by the media after leading Pitt with 109 total tackles – a true freshman school record – and compiling six tackles for loss, a sack assist, six pass breakups, one interception and a 22-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Navy in the Military Bowl.

The Aliquippa, Pa., native also excelled offensively towards the end of his debut season, averaging 10.2 yards per carry as a running back with 122 rushing yards on 12 carries. Whitehead’s breakout offensive performance came in November against Notre Dame when he rushed for two touchdowns (10 and three yards) on just four carries – all while making a team-high 11 tackles in his defensive duties.

Whitehead was previously placed on the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy for national Defensive Player of the Year, and the Jim Thorpe Award for college football’s top defensive back ahead of the upcoming 2016 campaign.

Led by the four watch-list honors for the local Central Valley High School product Whitehead, the Pitt football team has now amassed a total of 14 selections to the watch lists of 10 of college football’s most coveted awards.

Updated 2016 Pitt watch-list selections (14 total):
Maxwell Award: RB James Conner
Chuck Bednarik Award: DE Ejuan Price, S Jordan Whitehead
Rimington Trophy: C Alex Officer
Ray Guy Award: P Ryan Winslow
Bronko Nagurski Trophy: S Jordan Whitehead
