Steelers OLB Woodley is regaining his stride via Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Theories abounded when Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley got off to a slower start than a garage sale during a thunderstorm.

Money had made him complacent. Money had him trying to do too much. He was carrying too much weight.

Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor offered his own take Sunday afternoon, after Woodley broke out with 1.5 sacks and a crucial interception in a 38-17 win over the Tennessee Titans.

"I know something about LaMarr," Taylor said. "I don't think people understand, he always starts off late. I just know by his resume that he always starts late."

Verifying such a claim goes beyond consulting stats sheets.

The Steelers place as much of a value on pressuring the quarterback as they do actual sacks. The former is measured in the form of quarterback hurries, but it is still a subjective statistic to some degree.

"The guys in the locker room, the guys in the Steelers organization know the things I do out there on the field besides just being a pass rusher," said Woodley, who leads the team with three sacks and is fourth in quarterback hurries with six. "I think I also do a great job in coverage, which I was in coverage a lot (against the Titans). When I have an opportunity to rush, I just have to take advantage of it.

It is worth noting that in 2009, Woodley didn't have a sack in the Steelers' first four games. He had only two at the midpoint of the season before finishing with a career-high 13.5 and making the Pro Bowl.

It is also worth noting that Woodley's sacks tend to come in bunches.

He had 8.5 during a six-game stretch in 2008. He also had two sacks in each of three postseason games, including one on the final play of Super Bowl XLIII.

The six-year, $61.5 million contract that Woodley signed in August makes him an easy target for criticism. When asked if he had taken it upon himself as a captain to say anything to Woodley, inside linebacker James Farrior shrugged.

"We always challenge each other, especially in our (meeting) room as linebackers," Farrior said. "We always feel that we can control the game with our play. We're going into every game saying if we play well, we have a great chance of winning."

One big game does not necessarily mean Woodley is on his way to a monster season. But he said he doesn't measure his success or impact by individual numbers.

"I've never worried about what people say about me or my teammates," Woodley said, "because at the end of the day if we can come out on top and I have zero sacks, that's the most important thing."

What We Learned from Week Five by Jon Pennline

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 – 8:46 am

Did anyone have any doubt the Steelers would rebound against the Titans?

OK fine, I did when I predicted a 27-17 defeat of the black and gold on Saturday. I definitely thought the team would fail to hold Chris Johnson after giving up 150+ yards to Arian Foster the week before. After a 21 yard run on the first play of the game, the Steelers were stout, ending any chance of Chris Johnson reaching 100 yards and my fantasy football team improving to 3-2. The Steelers preached going "back to work" after their loss to the Houston Texans, the previous week. Against the Titans, it appeared Pittsburgh put in enough work to show they still got "it".

This game was a complete 180 degree swing from what we saw out of the Steelers all season. Not only did they win but they won convincingly against a solid Tennessee Titans squad that came into the contest an impressive 3-1. In the end, Pittsburgh came out with a shocking victory -shocking only because of the score- and kept their heads above water for a chance at the division crown. After thinking I knew so much about the Pittsburgh Steelers, I was taken back to school. Here's what I learned from week 5:

Not Too Old or Slow

Turns out, the Steelers of "old" can still stop the run and make teams one dimensional. Brett Keisel's return may have loomed larger than expected, and Larry Foote simpy did his job. Then again, Chris Hoke was a menace at nose tackle filling in for the injured Casey Hampton. The secret to stopping the stretch play may have been Hoke's ability to seal off the hole before the linemen could cut him down. What resulted was zero room for one of the league's premier backs. While the Steelers only managed one turnover, Troy Polamalu seemed to have three opportunities for interceptions that fell just out of reach. Lamarr Woodley came to life with a monster game, posting 1.5 sacks and an interception on a deflected ball from Keisel. With James Harrison out for several more weeks, Woodley has to be THE pass rusher for the Steelers with Timmons continuing to be used in coverage on most occurrences. Simply put, for this game, the defense looked good. The bigger question moving forward is, can they build off of this success?

Shorter is Better

When playing golf, sometimes it is better to hit the four-iron down the middle than to try and crush with a driver. For the first four weeks of the season, the Steelers offense has been trying to use the driver, only to slice the ball 80 yards out of bounds. Last week the Steelers kept it simple with quick passing routes and strong attention to the ground game with Ike Redman. What resulted was a five touchdown performance from Ben Roethlisberger including two touchdowns to Hines Ward who had been invisible up to that point. Ben was sacked once and only touched three times the whole game. That can also be accredited to the return of Max Starks who looked solid at left tackle despite starting for the first time since November 2010. But it could also be from a change in the mindset from the quarterback. The offense ended their obsession with the deep ball early and found success with short passes to move down the field. In the end, the Steelers were able to use the quick passes to open up the bomb to Mike Wallace. (See Ben? It is possible to have your cake and eat it too.) Hopefully, that philosophy will stay when Roethlisberger's foot is no longer injured.

The AFC is Mediocre

As the years go by things change in pro sports. Dominant teams go on the decline as terrible teams climb their way to the top. The once proud AFC Conference, three years removed from seeing the first team in NFL history to go 11-5 and miss the playoffs, is now a cluster of good, decent and bad teams. Every team has a significant weakness and no "top" team is safe. After manhandling the Steelers last week, the Texans lost against the Oakland Raiders on a last second interception. The Bills blew out the Eagles and beat the Patriots this year but also lost to the Cincinatti Bengals. Meanwhile, New England's favorite sitcom "Mr. Perfect and the Hoody" are 4-1 with a last place defense. The AFC North does not have a team under .500 with the last place Browns sitting on an idle 2-2 record. The playoff picture is completely wide open which gives the Steelers more than a fighting chance to make the playoffs after a Super Bowl appearance for the first time since 1996.

Anything can happen from now until week 17 but if the Steelers can go 2-2 in their next four games, they will enjoy a relatively easy track towards the end of the season playing Cleveland (2x), Cincinnati (x2), Kansas City, San Fransisco and St. Louis. Good luck telling that to this veteran group, though. The Steelers will continue to look at the short term which includes a visit from the putrid Jacksonville Jaguars; another opportunity for the defense to show they can still stop the run. Against a team significantly worse than the Titans, Pittsburgh should blow out the Jaguars at home. Could this be a team starting to peak at the right time? Or will this be a sign that the Steelers will remain consistently inconsistent throughout the season? I guess we'll need a lesson from week six.

Homecoming Heroics from the BEARCATS by Abby Geisel

published in category: Uncategorized on Monday, October 10th, 2011 – 2:06 pm

"First down BEARRRRCATTTTS!!!!", roars from the crowd, and newly unveiled mascot, Vinny, pointing toward the endzone were the sights and sounds from Saturday's Saint Vincent College football win over Washington and Jefferson College at Chuck Noll Field in Latrobe, PA.

Led by senior quarterback, Aaron Smetanka (formerly a D-1 Robert Morris University QB), the Bearcats stunned W&J 35-27, defeating the Presidents for the first time since the SVC program was resurrected in 2007.

After an overtime loss to previously winless Geneva College last week, I wasn't too sure what to expect out of Saint Vincent against Presidents Athletic Conference rivals W&J, who entered the contest 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. W&J came out firing on all cylinders, marching down the field in a no-huddle offense, scoring 7 points on the very first drive of the game. However, I was pleasantly surprised when Saint Vincent's defense tightened up and held the Presidents to 14 first half points. The Bearcats tacked on a touchdown of their own to cut the deficit to 7 entering the second half.

Then the fireworks began. W&J scored to increase their lead, 21-7, but SVC responded, keeping themselves within one possession of the Presidents at 21-14 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter. The remainder of the game was a collaborative team effort by the Bearcats with the defense picking off W&J QB, Matt Bliss, three times, and the offense capitalizing on those turnovers. After a Dan Wirkowski interception and 61-yard return, Cats fullback, Joe Yezovich flattened W&J's defense on his way to the endzone, and Morgan Porter tacked on an extra point to tie the game at 21 with 2:40 remaining in the third.

W&J's attempt to tie the game was thwarted when Bliss's pass was deflected and intercepted by SVC's Drew Owusu. Again, the Bearcats offense took advantage of the turnover when Smetanka threw a strike to wide-open Jake Smith, giving Saint Vincent its first lead of the game, 28-21.

A Darius Brown interception and Smetanka rushing touchdown increased SVC's lead to 35-14, but the Presidents stayed within striking distance by marching right to the endzone. However, the Bearcats special teams sealed the deal for Saint Vincent with an Anthony May blocked extra point and a deep Mike Kale punt.

Smetanka led the game in passing going 13-20 with 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. SVC running back tandem, Kale and Mike Ehredt, each rushed 16 times, racking up 92 and 83 yards, respectively.

Following the game, the Saint Vincent College student body rushed the field to celebrate the homecoming and historic win. It was a great day to be a Bearcat! Next week, SVC has a daunting challenge against another PAC powerhouse, currently undefeated, Thomas More College. The game will be played at Chuck Noll Field in Latrobe at 1PM.

QB Roethlisberger throws Steelers past Titans via Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday, October 10th, 2011 – 11:23 am

By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW

He left the media room at Heinz Field just as he had entered it late Sunday afternoon: without the hint of a smile.

One has to assume that coach Mike Tomlin was more enthused behind closed doors after the injury-depleted Steelers drilled the Tennessee Titans, 38-17, in front of 63,875.

But assumptions were all that could be made regarding the fifth-year coach after the Steelers played their most complete game of the season and hung five touchdowns on a defense that had been No. 1 in the NFL in scoring.

"We won," Tomlin said after his 51st career victory, which tied him with Buddy Parker for third on the Steelers' all-time list. "I am ready to move on."

The Steelers (3-2) are in a better position to move forward following an uneven start to the season.

They conclude the AFC South portion of their schedule Sunday when the reeling Jacksonville Jaguars visit Heinz Field. A trip to Arizona for a game against the one-win Cardinals follows. And three of the Steelers' next four games are at home.

Not that the Steelers were getting ahead themselves yesterday, even after a win that ultimately may be viewed as one that finally got their season going.

The mood in the home locker room could be described as muted, especially given the caliber of opponent and the relative ease with which the Steelers dispatched the Titans (3-2) despite missing five starters.

"We'll see what we do on a consistent basis," said All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu, who made a key stop on the first possession of the game and finished with nine tackles. "It's our job to maintain a really even level and a humble approach to the game."

In humbling the Titans, the Steelers took the concept of team effort to a different level.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tossed five touchdowns for the second time of his career. Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley had the breakout game everyone has been waiting for with 1.5 sacks and an interception that ranked as one of the plays of the sun-splashed day.

The Steelers also got big contributions from lesser lights.

Chris Hoke, playing for injured nose tackle Casey Hampton, proved to be stout in the middle of a defensive line that limited Titans running back Chris Johnson to 51 yards on 14 carries.

The Steelers are 16-1 in regular-season games that Hoke starts. They improved to 1-0 in games in which Jonathan Dwyer goes over 100 yards rushing.

Dressing because of a hamstring injury that sidelined starting running back Rashard Mendenhall, Dwyer ripped off a 76-yard run in the second quarter. The Steelers' longest run since 2006 – Dwyer also tied Willie Parker for seventh longest in franchise history – led to tight end David Johnson's first NFL touchdown.

Johnson's 1-yard catch gave the Steelers a 21-3 lead, and they weathered a few hiccups on the way to their third consecutive victory against Tennessee.

When asked where that kind of game has been all season, Woodley said, "We were trying to overdo it, make plays that we weren't supposed to make, and I think (yesterday) we went out there and played as a team and everybody stayed in their gap.

"Everybody did a good job of tackling and running to the ball, getting back to Steelers defense the way we've been for years. I think once we do that we're going to be hard to beat."

Inside linebacker James Farrior, who registered a team-high 13 tackles, said the victory is something on which the Steelers can build.

The key will be maintaining the intensity Tomlin ratcheted up last week when he had the Steelers practice twice in pads. Teams are only allowed to have two padded practices in a week once during the season.

"I think we were more focused in practice, and practice was a little more intense during the week and it seemed like everybody was ready to go," Farrior said. "We've just got to keep getting good weeks of practice in and hopefully it will transfer over to the game."

published in category: Sports Talk Radio on Friday, October 7th, 2011 – 2:24 pm

Congratulations to Blackhawk QB Josh Desmond, voted this week's TribLIVE Radio Athlete of the week. Josh is a 6"1, 175 pound Junior WRQB and DB and last Friday night he led Blackhawk in an upset win over top contender Hopewell. Filling in for super-sophomore quarterback Chandler Kincade who was out with a shoulder injury, Desmond was 7 of 14 passing for 178 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half as the Cougars stunned the Vikings 37-13. The Blackhawk defense which Desmond is also a part of held the WPIAL's all-time leading rusher, Rushel Shell to season low 109 yards and no touchdowns.

Bruce Arians Thursday: Titans Week

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 – 4:08 pm

Every Thursday, Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians meets the media. Here is today's transcript from "BA" on the state of the Pittsburgh offense.

On Rashard Mendenhall's status:

"You'll have to watch his conditioning and how the thing responds. You definitely don't want to overwork it and have him tweak it really bad. We'll see what tomorrow brings and what Saturday brings as far as how much each guy goes. [His hamstring] was bad enough to get him out of the ballgame. He didn't feel like he could burst with it. If he's healthy and full speed, missing Wednesday and Thursday is just giving him some rest. 'Cause the running lanes don't change and the reads don't change. He studies tape extremely well; he's a pro. He'll be more than ready and probably as rested as he's been in a while. That may even help him rather than hinder him. That doesn't concern me as much. But, I want to make sure he's 100% because it's a long, long season."

Do you need to see Rashard practice tomorrow?

"No, I need to see him run fast on Sunday, and not hurt, that's all I need to see"

Can Max Starks come in and in three days start [at LT]?

"Yeah. It'd be different if he was learning a new offense. He has shown up in great shape and he picked it right back up. We'll see again tomorrow which way we go and, it's nice to have flexibility. He is in the mix for sure."

Who is the starting RG?

"Starting RG is Ramon [Foster]. For good, right now (laughs). Until someone else gets dinged and we have to shuffle again. [Doug Legursky] is going to play let guard, and it's a better mix. I like what the right side did last week in the running game together, don't want to break that up. Doug is as flexible as all get-out, so, we're used to an athletic left [guard], and so it doesn't change us as much to have Dougie on the left side."

And when Kemoeatu comes back?

"That would totally depend on how those two guys play. It would be a nice feeling to have them all healthy. It's kind of like going through training camp right now, everybody's fighting for jobs and we're in the middle of the season. But it's due to injuries, and it could be a blessing in the long run, we'll have a lot of depth."

How's Kemoeatu's knee?

"He's got a number of injuries that he played with last week and had we had other healthy bodies probably wouldn't have played. He's the toughest guy I know, and he gutted it out and played for us and struggled. He struggled because he didn't have the use of one hand and his knee was killing him, but he battled as hard as he could, and that's all you can ask of a guy. Right now we've got enough bodies to try to get him healthy and it may take a week or two."

On dealing with this year's Roethlisberger foot injury compared to last year:

"Well, you're used to it, you've seen him play extremely well whether it was in the pistol when it was really broken and bad, you know. So we have a lot of options to use for him to be able to play and play effectively. He moved around pretty good today, and I think he'll get better each day and we'll take it on Sunday as far as what we need to do as far as positioning him to be able to play at his best."

On hot route mistakes with Ben and his WRs:

"Well, yeah Ben is right on target. Antonio missed one that Ray Charles should have seen. It was a true young guy mistake, he was all anxious to run a route and had he seen the hot he probably would still be running. Those are the kind of things that have cost us a couple big third down conversions and stopped drives. It's that youth, second year growing that we continue to grow and hopefully that doesn't happen any more."

Would John Clay be next up as the third RB if Mendenhall can't go?

"He'd be the next guy up, yeah. That would be a lot of decisions on coach's part as far as roster moves, but he'd be the next guy in line."

Banged Up Steelers Small Home Favorites vs Titans

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 – 10:21 am

So the vaunted Steeler defense hasn't been so vaunted and Big Ben may be on the limp for the Week 5 clash against the Titans.
The result has been a low opening number for the home team, rare against a mediocre squad like Tennessee. But with injuries to James Harrison and other on the D and Roethlisberger hobbled after the Houston game, 3.5 points is all the Steelers give.
"We still expect this number to climb, but it certainly didn't start where it would have with a healthy defense and a healthy Big Ben," said Mike Pickett of OddsShark.com. "People still love to bet the Steelers all across America, not just in western Penn." http://oddsshark.com/nfl/steelers-vs-titans-preview-october-09-2011

For their part, the Titans broke a 6-game road losing skid last week and will look to add to their win total at the expense of Pittsburgh. They have been bet all the way from +6.5 to +3 at some shops tracked by OddsShark.com.
If you were wondering which team has gotten the better of the point spread battle, it's very even. However, the OVER has prevailed seven of the past nine meetings here in Pitt, good for a 7-2 run on the total.
