A Roar Always Beats A Meow by Abby Geisel

published in category: College Sports on Monday, November 7th, 2011 – 8:12 am

The Pittsburgh Panthers are terrible. Maybe that is a bit harsh, but they play in arguably the worst football conference in college football and cannot win a game against a conference team. Walking down the concourse leaving Heinz Field last night, I heard fans complaining, "The refs were awful." While that may have been true, the Panthers easily could have beaten the Cincinnati Bearcats despite the quality of the referees. They controlled their own destiny in the Big East but fell 26-23 after leading most of the game.

Two of the most glaring problems with Pitt's inability to win games are quarterback play and kick returning. In a previous blog, I said that Tino Sunseri needed to step up, and I actually gave him the benefit of the doubt that he could do just that. He has done anything but that. While Sunseri threw for 218 yards against the Bearcats, he cost the team the game by throwing an interception and coughing up the ball once. And when the Panthers needed him to step up several times in the fourth quarter to lead the team down the field and score, he just couldn't do it. Sunseri has no long ball threat. He takes one element completely out of the game. In football, there are going to be times when a quarterback needs to execute a game-winning drive. Sunseri is absolutely not the guy to make that happen.

Another major issue that Pitt needs to address is kick returning. More than once against Cincy, Panther kick returners dropped the ball. Football is a fast game, and when a returner takes 2 seconds to pick up a ball they failed to catch, the opposing team has already made it down the field and is ready to tackle. People often underestimate the importance of solid special teams. Returns control field position. Pitt could have used a few drives that started beyond the 25-yard line, especially because their offense seemed to struggle when it truly mattered.

In addition, football is a game that can change in a heartbeat when a key player gets injured. Panther fans held their breath all week, waiting to see how their team would respond to the loss of running back, Ray Graham. They also knew that Pitt would be up against the second best running defense in the nation, Cincinnati. As a team, the Panthers did put up 179 yards, but that is what Ray Graham typically puts up individually. Zach Brown is no Ray Graham, but he did finish the game with 11 carries for 54 yards.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, their growl was nearly silenced to a meager meow in comparison to the Bearcat roar that reverberated through Heinz Field following a missed Pitt field goal in the final seconds of the game.

Go back to the drawing board for next year, Coach.

Bruce Arians talks on Ravens Week

published in category: Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 – 4:41 pm

On Ben Roethlisberger's first four weeks versus the last four weeks:

"Well, we've thrown the ball in the last few ballgames so obviously that's going to increase [his numbers], but you know a little better protection. The offensive line's had a little continuity two games in a row. Everybody's growing a little bit and knowing their roles. A couple of those games we felt we could come out and run the ball very, very well and it wasn't need that much. Each one is a little bit different but he did have a nice four game stretch."

On Ben's NFL MVP chances:

"I think that always comes with your team winning. If your team's winning and your numbers are big enough, they've got a chance. It's not something I think we dream about or talk about, that's just an accolade that would come with a team winning."

How motivational is showing the last game versus the Ravens?

"None really. You just turn on the tape and it speaks for itself, it was that bad. We moved the ball OK we just kept turning it over. It can be good for you, it can be bad for you. We haven't spent much time talking about it, other than the things they did. We're both [teams] a little bit different, we're hopefully a little bit better now. They're a little bit better also. Every time we play it's a little bit of a chess match. There was a game here we had 'em 35-0, and down there they had us that way. Every one else is down to the end. Everybody here, the young kids are learning about it. They're not used to Ravens week. It's a little different. They get a feel from the veterans, and our veterans know what to expect. Getting tight isn't one of the things you need to do."

How have Max Starks and Marcus Gilbert been playing?

"Extremely well. I think that's one of the things that has been most impressive is how well they have played. Especially Max coming off the couch. But we knew Marcus had a chance. He kept injuring that shoulder. Fairly healthy now. But they've made a big difference in our protection and you'd be remiss in not saying they did."

How important has Max been to the O-Line in general?

"Can't give him enough kudos. Now he's got a heck of a challenge on his hands this week. He and Suggs have a pretty good history. And the young fellow [Gilbert] is going to have his hands full, too."

Did your gameplan change once you found out Leigh Bodden was gone last week?

"No."

You planned on going at 'em like you did the whole time?

"We ran it more than I thought we would."

On the team's running game in the first meeting with Baltimore:

"We had to leave it. I was like, dang, that the first time we've ever played them that we're running the ball this good, and we had the miscommunication coming out at halftime (Haloti Ngata forced fumble). The play we ran is the same play we gained like 8 or 9-yards early, and we turned the biggest 'Cat' they got loose and got a fumble and the game's over. Those are the kind of errors you just can't have. Hopefully playing at home the noise and the communication is much better [and] we won't have those kind of errors."

Is the running game more important in a game like this?

"I think balance is. When you play a defense as good as these guys you can't get one-dimensional in either phase. If you're going to try and run it, they're going to stuff you. If you're going to try and throw it every down, they'll get you. They pride themselves, as we do, they're a great third down defense. Because they play good first and second down defense they keep you behind the chains. It's the only [year-long opponent's] tape you turn on and there's twenty-two snaps of 3rd-and-seven to ten. Everybody else might have ten or twelve [snaps]. And there's only three completions on there. They are number one in the league on third down, and we're number three [on offense], so it should be a good matchup. It's a great challenge for us, they always are. But third down will be a very critical area in this game for us to maintain possession of the football."

How does Terrell Suggs compare with some of the tough pass rushers you've faced?

"Suggs, that's my man. He's the best. We don't play anybody quite like him. He's got great up-and-under move, he's a relentless pass rusher, he's got great passion. I love watching him play. I always talk to him before and after the games because I really respect the guy. He's a threat."

He's the best you've faced?

"Yes, indeed."

Is identification the key with him, where he lines up?

"Well, he usually plays their open side-end. It's not too much hard finding him. Every now and then he'll be up the middle, in a couple of their different blitzes. But you've got to find Terrell and know where he's at."

How close are you to being able to pick a new identity every week?

"I think we've been able to do that for the last month. There are certain games we had the running game going and stuck with it. Had a great half against Jacksonville and then the second half we just didn't convert our third downs, we ran it really good just didn't convert our third downs. No matter which way you decide to go, you've got to hit third down. Our goal is to be over 50% and then we know we're going to have time of possession whether we're running or throwing. Time of possession is not what you're doing, it's converting third downs."

How versatile are your receivers becoming?

"Each guy can play inside and outside. They're multi-dimensional. As is Heath [Miller]. And our backs, MeWelde split out and caught the slant for the TD [last week]. When you have that kind of flexibility, it's fun. It's easy to coach, because you can't just zero in on defense, 'this guy's going to be here and there, we can bracket this guy and we can double team this guy because they might be on the same side.' It makes it difficult when you have guys who can play inside and outside."

What do you expect from Emmanuel Sanders this week?

"It's hard, when you lose your mother at such a very young age, to be able to come back and play. Even if he makes it back [to the team] in time, I mean this is something that we're not expecting. Our prayers and hearts just go out to him and his family. We don't know [when he's due back], it's just up to him."

R&R: Pens' Schedule Finally Grants a Break by Jon Pennline

published in category: Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 – 9:08 am

After playing more games (13) than any team in the NHL in October, the Penguins finally catch a break in November. The Penguins, not having played since Saturday, will play next on the road in San Jose. While the road trip is still cross-country, the Pens have a chance to give some of their banged up players, such as Jordan Staal, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, a chance to recover.

Of course, the biggest story surrounds their captain, Sidney Crosby.

Crosby was finally able to take some physical contact yesterday when Deryk Engelland knocked the 24 year old superstar on his backside. While everyone waited with bated breath to see how he would respond, Crosby laughed as he went sliding across the ice at Southpointe. Although he still did not go through rigorous contact drills, the overall process seems to be moving in the right direction as the Penguins are finally able to schedule full practices. Meanwhile, Jordan Staal and Kris Letang were given the day off. Staal has been bothered by an "undisclosed lower body injury" which could be code for "pulled/sore muscle." Head coach, Dan Bylsma, iterated that Staal will travel with the team to California for their two game road trip against the Sharks and Kings.

"He's day-to-day"

Day-to-day in October could have meant missing 3-4 games given the Penguins tough schedule to start the season. The Pens started out in western Canada, playing against the Canucks, Flames and Oilers in a mere four day period. On top of that, they were facing each respective team on their opening nights which would give the team an emotional boost from the excitement of the crowd. Nevertheless, the Penguins went 2-0-1 on their road trip before coming home where they went 1-1-1. After one day off, the Penguins found themselves traveling to Manitoba to take on the Winnipeg Jets where they looked somewhat fatigued and lost 2-1. A rebound win the following night against Minnesota saved the mini road trip before they finished off the month with an impressive 4-1 record.

Since the season began, the Penguins never had more than two consecutive days off, with the "break" coming in the last week of the month (23rd and 24th). On the other hand, they had two separate occurrences where they played on consecutive days. In the end, the team had played 13 games in 24 days including road trips that spanned four time zones. And yet, the Pittsburgh Penguins still managed to finish 8-3-2 with a league leading 18 points. Now, with the team playing just two games in the next 12 days, the Penguins have a chance to reload and relax.

Evgeni Malkin, who has been dealing with some soreness in his surgically repaired right knee, took the Halloween holiday by force according to his twitter account. The Russian superstar posted pictures of himself with Sid in their costumes; Malkin went as mustache boy while Sid was a gladiator. The time at home after spending half of October on the road relaxes the mind along with the body. With Malkin now playing in consecutive games, the early season soreness may be dissipating. With one superstar back, it is only a matter of time until the other one returns as well.

Barring setbacks, it would be a surprise if Sidney Crosby is not playing by the end of the month. Several fans and media outlets have predicted a November 11th return. While it is impossible to tell exactly when he will return, at this point, Crosby will definitely have opportunities to test how his brain reacts to contact. If everything goes well, the best team in the league will get back the best player in the league. However, given the team's success there is hardly any pressure to rush him back. When Sid returns to the lineup, he will be completely healthy and he'll, once again, lead a team that is one of the best in the league. If we thought 8-3-2 was an impressive stretch, just wait until he comes back.
