9-3. 35-7.
For Steelers fans, those are two beautiful numerical strings, a record and a final score, to soak in here in the aftermath of a four TD win over the Cincinnati Bengals at Heinz Field.
Consider that in the Bill Cowher Era, the team had 9-3 records to start a season three times (1992, 2001, and 2004) over a fifteen year span. Current coach Mike Tomlin has overseen it happening now for a fourth time in five seasons.
And the blowout win represented the 8th win in 10 tries against division rival Cincinnati, a team that came in with playoff aspirations and left with playoff desperation.
It certainly was a team victory in every sense. The offense was four-for-four in converting red-zone trips into touchdowns. The defense allowed just 232-yards for the game in addition to the single digits in points. And the special teams stole the show, with a first half featuring: a blocked FG, a forced fumble on a kick return, a punt return for a score, punts of 59- and 57-yards, and excellent coverage play led by Curtis Brown's two open-field stops.
Here are some more notes and quotes from the Steelers-Bengals game:
-The Doug Legursky story continues to be a fascinating one. The undrafted lineman out of Marshall already had a Super Bowl start at center under his belt (the first one at that position of his NFL career), and coming into today had 11 league starts all told. But this was the first complete game he played at left guard since beating out $20 million dollar man Chris Kemoeatu for the job. Last week he was forced to switch to center when Maurkice Pouncey left due to illness. 7 of his previous starts have been at right guard. He's dealt with shoulder and toe injuries this year. The Legursky Left Guard Era has now officially begun, and it was a solid start with the run game producing a 4.1 per carry average, 136-yards rushing against the Bengals' 5th ranked run defense. Legursky pulled well on the Steelers' signature power runs to the right, and paved the way for running back Rashard Mendenhall's first score of the ballgame.
-OK, technically it wasn't a complete game at left guard for Legursky as Pouncey was pulled in mop-up time and Doug took his place at center. But still, it was a game of continued continuity for the new look O-Line. Ramon Foster was nicked up late in the game, but said afterward he thinks he'll be OK to play Thursday night vs. Cleveland. The pass protection held up well, too, with QB Ben Roethlisberger taking just two sacks (one a coverage sack).
-LaMarr Woodley left the game on the defense's second series with, as he described it, a hamstring that was "just a little sore." I noticed Woodley walking with a slight limp even late last week around the team facility, too, and it may be a process for him to return full-time. Woodley told the Trib's Scott Brown he may have to rotate playing time for the rest of the season with Jason Worilds.
-Steelers receivers Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown had bounce-back games after reduced effectiveness against Kansas City last week. Brown, in addition to his 60-yard punt return TD, caught a key 45-yard ball on a crossing route to set up the team's first score. He also showed his toughness late when taking a big hit from Cincinnati safety Reggie Nelson near the sideline. As Brown said, "that was one of my first NFL big hits. You've got to be able to get up, that's what this league is about."
-Wallace had two TDs to give him 8 on the season, and he drew a 45-yard penalty on a pass interference to set up the Steelers' second score. The second Wallace touchdown featured tough running, turning a wide receiver screen into a 19-yard dagger-in-the-heart slice to the endzone. Pacman Jones had given Wallace a good lick to dislodge a catch over the middle early in the game, but Mike rebounded from that and from his two-drop game last week to again be a huge factor for the offense. "We're grown men," said Wallace afterwards. "Nobody had to beat it in our heads that we didn't play well [last week]. [The WRs] took it on ourselves to get better. I think all of us showed up today."
-Wallace needs 422 receiving yards to pass Yancey Thigpen's 1997 team-record mark of 1,398 in a season. Wallace's pace is for 77 catches and 1,302 yards. He'll face a few statistically good passing defenses over the final four games, with Cleveland (#1, twice), St. Louis (#8), and San Francisco (#21) remaining on the schedule.
-Here are the other Steelers WR paces for the 16-game regular season:
Brown 66 catches, 1032 yards
Heath Miller 55 catches, 663 yards
Hines Ward 48 catches, 425 yards
Emmanuel Sanders 28 catches, 265 yards
-Roethlisberger is on pace for exactly the same number of yards he threw for in 2009, a team record 4,328 yards passing. Ben was over 100 in his QB rating (117.3), the fourth time this year he's done that and the 45th time in the regular season in his career. Ben also has three 100+ QB rating games in the playoffs.
-Wallace commented on Antonio Brown's touchdown dance celebration, which Brown has termed 'The Brownie Wiggle.' Said Wallace, "that's his trademark dance, but he's got to give me a little flavor. He gives a little more flavor every time he does it, a little more wiggle with it."
-James Harrison's three sack day gave him eight on the year, one behind Woodley for the team lead. It's also the second game this year Harrison's had the 'sack-hat trick.' Mike Merriweather (1984) and Chad Brown (1996) are the only other Steelers who have managed multiple three-sack games in a season since the NFL began keeping that mark in 1982.
-Defensive captain James Farrior's take on the defensive strategy: "We did our normal zone blitzing that we normally do, we didn't change the gameplan much [from the first meeting with Cincinnati]. Guys just played better. I definitely think we're playing well. Our offense kept scoring, and we had great play out of our special teams, finally got my boy into the endzone. That might have been the difference."
-Casey Hampton almost had himself a sack as well, but his lunge for Andy Dalton in the third quarter came up empty. Teammate Brett Keisel said "I had to razz him a little bit on the sideline, because he doesn't get that many opportunities. If 'Hamp' gets a sack you know we're playing well." For the record, Hampton does have nine sacks in his 11-year career.

After squeaking out a 13-9 win against the pitiful Kansas City Chiefs last week, the Steelers vowed to make corrections over the course of the week.
Corrections made.
Regardless of how hard it was to win in Cincinnati three weeks ago, the Steelers dominated the Bengals in all three phases, yesterday. The Steelers got out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back, stomping the Bengals 35-7 en route to ensuring their fifth straight winning season and, most likely, second straight trip to the playoffs.
Rashard Mendenhall scored two touchdowns inside the five yard line and a Bengals fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to a Mike Wallace 12 yard strike from Ben Roethlisberger. In five minutes, the Steelers had put up 21 points and a young Bengals team could not recover. An 11 yard touchdown pass from Andy Dalton to AJ Green cut the lead to 21-7, but an Antonio Brown punt return late in the first half ensured that the Bengals would not have a chance to come back against their division rivals.
In the second half, the Steelers flexed their muscles on defense. James Harrison had three sacks while Ike Taylor picked off Pittsburgh native, Bruce Gradkowski. Rookie quarterback, Andy Dalton, was held to 135 yards passing while the Bengals never had a chance to establish Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott on the ground.
Now, sitting at 9-3, the Steelers are still in the mix to win the division if the Ravens lose one more game than Pittsburgh by the end of the season. With a Thursday night matchup against the hopeless Browns, Pittsburgh has a chance to reach double-digit wins for the eighth time in the last eleven seasons.
As Mike Tomlin always says, "the standard is the standard." Well, right now, the standard isn't just a playoff berth, it's a sixth AFC North division title and first round bye.
Notes
Coach Mike Tomlin has now clinched a winning record in each of his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ben Roethlisberger's nine yard completion to David Johnson gave him the most completions in franchise history (2,026), passing Terry Bradshaw.
Despite missing a month due to injury, James Harrison has eight sacks on the season.
Antonio Brown's 60 yard punt return was the first punt return for a touchdown since Santonio Holmes ran one back against Carolina in 2006.
Lamarr Woodley left the game in the first quarter after aggravating his hamstring. With a short week ahead, it seems very doubtful he will play against the Browns on Thursday.

Despite already facing the New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens (twice), there may not be a bigger game to decide the Steelers' playoff hopes than this week's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Steelers (8-3) will try to duplicate their week ten effort against the Bengals (7-4) when they spoiled Cincinnati's comeback bid with a late interception from William Gay en route to a 24-17 win. After getting out to a quick 14-0 lead, the Steelers struggled to hang on against rookie quarterback, Andy Dalton. The second round pick from TCU was 15-30 for 170 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions as the Steelers improved to 12-1 against rookie quarterbacks in the Dick Lebeau era.
Since the week 10 loss, the Bengals have had mixed results in each of their last two weeks. In week 11, they lost a close game to the Baltimore Ravens on the road, and in week 12 they squeaked out a victory against the Cleveland Browns. Now, they are looking to hand the Steelers their third loss within the division which would put the Steelers in third place in the AFC North.
The Steelers are coming off a close win against the putrid Kansas City Chiefs after enjoying a rare, late, bye-week. Former Pitt quarterback, Tyler Palko, was one pass away from defeating his childhood team and capping off one of the bigger upsets this season but, Keenan Lewis's interception with under a minute remaining sealed Pittsburgh's fate and kept them in a first place tie with the Baltimore Ravens. Despite the win, the Steelers seemed unimpressed with their effort, vowing to make the necessary corrections over the course of this week.
Perhaps the Steelers are saving their best work for the biggest game which could be this upcoming week against the Bengals. A Steelers' victory this Sunday would keep Pittsburgh in the hunt for a division title while creating a two game cushion between them and the Bengals. A victory would also keep teams such as the Broncos, Jets and Titans from inching closer to a wild card spot. Most importantly, however, a win would keep the Steelers in the hunt for a division title and possible first round bye; a spot they have earned two of the last three seasons.
While the Texans are currently the top team in the conference, injuries to the quarterback position have forced them to rely on Jake Delhomme for the remainder of the season (unless he either gets hurt or throws an inordinate amount of interceptions). This weekend they have a tough test against the Atlanta Falcons before playing the Bengals on the road in week 14. Meanwhile, the Patriots continue to win pretty, beating up on terrible teams. Their last five games don't get any harder as they face the Colts (0-11), Redskins (4-7), Broncos (6-5), Dolphins (3-8), and Bills (5-6). Not exactly difficult but the Patriots have had issues on defense all year and a team that can move the ball on them can win. Still, if both the Steelers and Patriots manage to win out and the Steelers take the division, they will win the tie-breaker due to the Steelers beating the Patriots in week 8.
Other than a week 15 matchup against the 49ers on Monday Night Football, the Steelers have a cakewalk heading into the postseason. Among their five remaining games, Pittsburgh has to play the terrible St. Louis Rams and the horrible Cleveland Browns (twice). While there are no guarantees in today's NFL, you would be hard-pressed to find a more focused group of players heading into the final stretch of the season.
Still, they need to win.
All of the gaffs and mental breakdowns in last week's win against the Kansas City Chiefs need to be cleaned up before this divisional matchup. Other than the two touchdowns put up in the first few minutes of the game in week 10, the Bengals were able to go stride for stride with the Steelers by playing tough defense and establishing a decent running game. This is far from a "gimme" on the schedule, in fact, in should be viewed as a playoff game. The outcome of this game could set the playoff picture for the AFC and, depending on the result, the Steelers could be a top seed in the AFC, or on the outside looking in.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby's triumphant return to the lineup last week following a 61-game injury absence earned him the NHL's 'First Star' award for the week ending Nov. 27.
Crosby, who made his season debut against the NY Islanders on Nov. 21, tallied nine points (2G-7A) and a league-best plus-7 rating in four games last week to edge out a pair of goaltenders — Vancouver's Cory Schneider and Brian Elliott of the St. Louis Blues.
Crosby began the week by registering his 21st career four-point game against the Islanders with two goals and two assists — including a goal on his second shift of the night. Crosby also had a game-high eight shots and won 14 of 21 faceoffs.
After being held scoreless against St. Louis on Nov. 23, Crosby finished the week with back-to-back multiple-point games against Ottawa and Montreal. Crosby picked up three assists on Friday against Ottawa and followed that up by recording a pair of helpers the next night in a 4-3 come-from-behind win against the Canadiens.
Crosby's return helped the Penguins go 3-0-1 last week, propelling them to the top of the NHL's overall standings with 32 points.

Penguins' head coach Dan Bylsma has a luxury unprecedented by the other 29 teams in the NHL. His first line center is arguably the best player in the world, his second line center possesses superstar talent unmatched by 98% of the league, and his third line center would be a top line player on most NHL teams.
At times, Bylsma will pair his top two centermen, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, on the same shift in hopes of sparking some offense. Bob Errey frequently uses the term "two-headed monster" as a nickname for Crosby and Malkin. However, with the emergence of Jordan Staal, the Penguins have a "three-headed monster", uncontested by anyone else in the NHL.
Through the first quarter of the regular season, Staal has 12 goals which is good enough for 6th in the league, while contributing 18 total points. Not bad for a guy who plays on the third line, typically a spot for strong defensive players with seldom scoring ability. Yet this 23 year old star has added a scoring touch and looks to be well on his way to passing his career high in goals (29) when he was a rookie. After struggling through injuries last season, Staal has come back looking more comfortable and confident in his abilities.
Over the first five years of his career, Staal has been heavily criticized due to how slow he appeared to be on the ice. His decision making, skating, shooting all seemed to take too long to develop during games. While his brother, Eric, was a Stanley Cup champion and elite-level centerman offensively and defensively, Jordan was viewed as a lesser player due to how uncoordinated he seemed to play. Crosby "flies" down the ice, Malkin "glides", while Staal "lumbers." His only value, it appeared, was killing penalties. Now, a more aggressive Jordan Staal is taking the league by force thanks to what would appear to be more confidence in his physical ability and size. At 6'4 220 pounds, he is extremely tough to knock off the puck combined with his unusually soft hands (24.5% shot percentage). While the offensive side of Staal's game has picked up, the defensive side is still as strong as ever. The Penguins continue to be one of the top 5 teams in the league in penalty killing thanks, large part, to Jordan Staal.
He may not be the most electrifying player, especially on a team with two of the most exciting players in the NHL, but Staal is the key ingredient to a Stanley Cup team. Opposing teams try to match their best defensive unit with Sidney Crosby's line while Evgeni Malkin usually receives a tough assignment against a playoff team's second defensive pairing. With only three defensive pairings on a standard NHL roster, that usually creates a mismatch between the Staal-Kennedy-Cooke line and the third defensive pairing sent out to stop them.
With the emergence of their third center, Jordan Staal, the Penguins may need to start adopting the nickname "three-headed monster." Then again, Dan Bylsma may have already beaten everyone to the punch as he used Crosby-Malkin-Staal as a line in Friday night's game against the Ottawa Senators. The talent the Penguins possess up the middle can be overwhelming and, at times, unstoppable. If all three players can stay healthy in the Spring, the Penguins could find themselves carving another roster into the Stanley Cup.
