Todd Graham bails on Pitt, named ASU head coach by Dominic Errico

published in category: College Sports, Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, December 15th, 2011 – 9:24 am

Todd Graham is the luckiest man on Earth.

Less than one year after realizing his dream of being the head coach at "one of the finest programs in the country" he has achieved another dream by becoming the head coach at Arizona State University.

Please note the sarcasm.

He promised the fans of Pittsburgh that he'd build a championship program, but the only thing he managed to do in his one and only year was completely fail on all levels as a head coach.

Throw your quarterback under the bus? Check.
Fail to adapt your system to fit the talent you have? Check.
Manage to blow several late leads, including a three TD lead on the road in Iowa? Check.
Fail to win a weak Big East conference? Check.
Leave town like a damn coward without even facing your now former players? Check.

That's right, the man of high moral values, who wanted his players to do the right thing, sent a text message to an assistant coach to be redistributed to the players. He didn't even have the balls to face the players face to face.

It's not like Graham hasn't done this before. Days after receiving a contract extension and pay raise from Rice, he bolted for Conference USA rival Tulsa. He only coached Rice for one year. He learned from the best. He was an assistant for another backstabbing traitor, Rich Rodriguez in 2001 and 2002. RichRod bailed on WVU to become the head coach at Michigan.

I want to know how much it'll cost PAT Transit to repaint all the buses with this snake oil salesman's face on it.

If you're ASU, how could you even take this guy seriously as a candidate? Barely went .500 in a completely weak Big East Conference. Willing to bail on you after less than one season. That's right. this scumbag won't even coach Pitt in the Compass Bowl.

I found this quote from ASU president Dr. Michael Crow to be rather amusing. "What we sought in a football coach was someone who would be in it for the long term at Arizona State, who would build and guide a program that would be competitive in the PAC-12 and on a national level year after year after year, who would communicate and connect with the community, and represent our University with honor. In Todd Graham we have that person,"

If one year is your idea of long term, something is wrong with your head.

What exactly has Graham done to make him a worthy hire in the first place? 5 years in Conference USA and he could never win that league. One year in the Big East and he couldn't win that either, even WITH all the teams tyring their hardest to lose it.

Graham was supposed to be out on the recruiting trail bringing in players for Pitt but at the same time he was plotting his departure from the school. Backup Trey Anderson said it well. "I go take a nap and wake up to find out my head coach is gone."

Quite the vanishing act, but I'm sure now that he's found his dream job at ASU, he'll settle in for the long haul.

So what happens now? Pitt has had Dave Wannstadt, Phil Bennett (interim coach for last year's BBVA Compass Bowl), Mike Haywood, Todd Graham, and now interim head coach Keith Patterson who will lead the squad into THIS year's BBVA Compass Bowl. That's technically five head coaches in the last 12 months.

What kind of message does that send to recruits? Chris Peak from Panther Lair has reported some Pitt recruits remain committed, including quarterback Chad Voytik. Even still, Pitt fans have to be nervous until letter of intent day arrives and these guys officially sign the dotted line.

Who does Pitt hire at this point to coach the team? You need to find a guy that truly is committed to the long term, regardless of whether the guy has previous head coaching experience or not. Ideally you find a guy who has ties to the local area and won't go bolting for the next BCS job to open up.

Before such a decision is made, you need to look at why Pitt is in this situation to begin with. Maybe if Steve Pederson made better choices than Mike Haywood and Todd Graham, Pitt would not be looking once again for a head coach so soon.

How does Pederson survive as athletic director in the face of this? He made these hires and their failures on so many levels have brought a lot of shame to the Pitt program. Pederson needs to be fired.

I may be anything but a Pitt fan, but their fans deserve so much better than this.

High math scores earn New Kensington students Ike Taylor

published in category: Ike Taylor, Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 – 4:57 pm

Steelers starting cornerback Ike Taylor spoke to about 250 elementary students at Martin School on Tuesday afternoon, telling them the importance of teamwork.

"We all know with teamwork everybody's got to play their role," Taylor said.

The students met Taylor as a reward for their high math scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessments, the state standardized test given to elementary students starting with the third grade.

The school was recognized for its math scores jumping 13 percentage points in a year. It also was one of two schools in the state recognized with a national title, school Principal Donna Holtzman said.

Taylor underscored the importance of having good teachers during his visit to Martin School.

"Teachers are like second families," Taylor said. "It's always good to listen to your parents and teachers."

The 30-year-old Taylor, the Steelers' No. 24, sported a red, zip-up hoodie, jeans and winter boots. He went to college at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

Taylor fielded students' questions — both about on- and off-field topics.

When asked what his best game was, Taylor responded: "My best game is yet to come," but also noted the Ravens game of two weeks ago that the Steelers won in the waning moments.

Other football questions: Taylor said that chucking — bumping a receiver once near the line of scrimmage to disrupt a pass pattern — is what he does best; that it doesn't hurt when he's knocked down — "dropped," as the student questioner put it; and that game day is his favorite part of being a professional football player.

"My favorite part is Sunday — playing on Sundays," Taylor said. "Practice is OK, but I love playing on Sunday."

One student wanted to know who Taylor's favorite football player is.

"I could be selfish and say myself, but I would have to say Troy Polamalu," Taylor said.

Students also were curious about Taylor's life when he's not on the field.

One boy asked about what else Taylor does other than play football, to which he responded, "I play 'Madden' all day."

That prompted a question of whether Taylor sees his animated self on Madden, the popular NFL video game.

"I see myself all the time," he said.

Taylor posed for pictures with teachers and students, signed autographs and sat down on the gymnasium floor for cookies and juice with the kids.

Steelers pennants and paper helmets were taped to the gym wall, and many students wore black-and-gold outfits.

Taylor's visit was a surprise for the students — all they knew was that they were having a special black-and-gold Steelers Day. Then, an announcement came over the loudspeaker inviting them all to the gymnasium.

The school holds students from pre-kindergarten to third grades.

This was Taylor's first visit to New Kensington, and he reflected on driving along the area's bridges and seeing all the homes nestled on the hills.

Taylor was contacted through a friend of the district, not through the Steelers, Holtzman said.

"He did this as a goodwill gesture all on his own," she said.

Taylor also visited Grandview Elementary School in Tarentum briefly, but did not make a formal presentation to students.

Holtzman told the Martin students to keep Taylor's comments in mind.

"Remember what Ike told you: work hard, and it takes a whole team to get the job done," she said.

To Taylor — a father, himself — spending the afternoon at the school was important.

"All you can give kids is time," Taylor said. "Gifts and all the other stuff is cool, but the biggest thing is time."

AFC Playoff Seedings Still TBD by Jon Pennline

published in category: Ike Taylor, Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, December 13th, 2011 – 9:13 am

As the Green Bay Packers march towards perfection and a first round bye in the NFC playoffs, the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are still gridlocked at 10-3 in the AFC. Their equal records are indicative of each team's relentlessness to give up their spot as the potential top team in the AFC. While each team has had at least one disappointing loss early in the season, they've also started to heat up at the right time. Let's take a look at the top four teams:

New England Patriots

The Patriots have put together five straight wins since losing back to back games against the Steelers and Giants. Although the defense is still statistically the worst in the NFL, it is extremely hard to match the execution of the offense. Tom Brady is well on his way to passing for over 5000 yards despite lacking the threat of a big play receiver like Randy Moss. Regardless of New England's recent lack of success in the playoffs, I find it hard to believe anyone wants their team to make a trip to Foxboro in January.

Then there's the developing story of the heated exchange between Brady and Offensive Coordinator, Bill O'Brien. As much as we all would like to read into this as the beginning of the end to Belichick's regime, the fact of the matter is, most teams go through this over the course of a season. Willie Parker complaining about not getting the ball in 2008 didn't seem to stop the Steelers; Keyshawn Johnson's tirade against Jon Gruden on Monday Night Football didn't stop the 2002 Buccaneers either. The Patriots are fine and with an easy schedule ahead of them (Broncos, Dolphins and Bills), it is entirely possible they will be the top seed by the end of the month.

Houston Texans

No Matt Schaub? No problem! TJ Yates led a comeback win against the Cincinnati Bengals, bringing Houston's win streak to seven games. With Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart out for the year, the Texans will need to rely on the rookie from North Carolina in the franchise's first playoffs. They should also get all-world wide receiver Andre Johnson back from a hamstring injury in the divisional round. Looking past the quarterback, the Texans have one of the best offensive lines to block for one of the elite running backs in the league. Houston is second in the league in rushing behind the Denver Tim Tebows, while their defense is ranked first overall in fewest yards allowed. In essence, they play solid "Bill Cowher" football despite playing indoors. Then again, we all remember how Bill Cowher fared during his coaching tenure with the Steelers in the playoffs. The NFL is a passing league more than ever and it seems illogical to believe a rookie quarterback can bring the Texans to the promise land. Then again, their final three games against the Panthers, Colts and Titans don't exactly hinder their chances of going 13-3.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens are 2-0 against the Steelers and 0-3 after dousing their coach with Gatorade. Still, the Ravens have quietly won four in a row without the help of Ray Lewis. The offense seems to have figured out that their best chance to win is to give Ray Rice the ball at least twenty times a game. After losing to the Seattle Seahawks, in which Rice only received five carries, the Ravens have given the fourth year running back at least twenty carries in the last four games. The result? Not only has Ray Rice racked up 470 yards, the Ravens have won in convincing fashion each time. With the Steelers in their regular season rear view mirror, the Ravens can clinch an AFC North division title for the first time since 2006. That would also give them at least one game at home where the Ravens are 7-0 this season.

Still, of the four 10-3 teams, the Ravens have the hardest remaining schedule. While they are 7-0 at home, they are 3-3 on the road with some ugly losses to Jacksonville, Tennessee and Seattle. Other than the Browns at home, the Ravens face two teams that are desperately trying to fight for a playoff spot in the Chargers and Bengals. Both of those games will be on the road and the Ravens will face San Diego on Sunday Night Football.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Since their heartbreaking loss to Baltimore in week 9, the Steelers have "stacked" four straight wins and are doing their best to keep even pace with the Ravens. Of all the playoff teams, the Steelers will need a bye week the most, given their veteran defense and hobbled quarterback. If you want to know how desperate this team is, just watch last Thursday's game against the Cleveland Browns when Ben Roethlisberger played the entire second half on a high ankle sprain. With ten days to rest, you better believe Big Ben will be ready to go on Monday Night Football against the San Fransisco 49ers. That does not take away from the fact that the most important piece to Pittsburgh's chances of winning another Super Bowl has a serious injury that could hinder him throughout the playoffs.

The Steelers started out struggling against the run and appeared to look over the hill. But, since September they have regrouped to rank sixth in rush defense while ranking first in pass defense. The most alarming aspect of their turnaround against the pass is that they are using the same players as last year. Ike Taylor is having a Pro-Bowl year while William Gay and Keenan Lewis have been solid at the other corner position. If the Ravens allow Pittsburgh an extra week off to rest, it could be bye-bye birdies for the third straight time. First, the Steelers have to get past a tough San Fransisco team on the road. After that, it is two cupcake match ups against the Browns and Rams.

If the playoffs started today, the seedings would go as follows:

1) Texans
2) Ravens
3) Patriots vs. 6) Jets
4)Tebows vs. 5) Steelers

The Texans are ahead of the Ravens due to conference record (8-2 vs. 7-2).
The Ravens are ahead of the Patriots due to a better record in "common games" (4-0 vs 3-1).

For the Steelers to get a first round bye, they need the Ravens to win one less game. Assuming the Texans and Patriots win out, the Steelers would get the 2nd seed due to their win over the Patriots and loss to the Texans. To get the top seed in the AFC, the Texans AND Ravens both need to lose.
